I hope Mister Lane has gotten his head together and will not ruin his future like so many other talented athletes have.
Change the station.
Butch Jones is 100% class and 100% professional. From what I have seen so far, I think The Vols are in good hands and await great things coming.
in response to imw8n4u: I don't buy into this theory that for us to catch up, the other teams have to somehow come back down to our level. This isn't some race to the bottom, this is the SEC. It's time for us to rise to the challenge and stop whining about the level of competition. Also, this isn't some game of chance as Adams puts it, this is a game of skill, and to win we have to once again get the level of skill it takes to compete. So far Jones seems to be able to do that, I just hope he can keep everything together through what will almost certainly be a challenging season. Go Vols!

If you look at 100 years of football, you will see that Tennessee did not have to worry about other programs. Other schools had to worry about how to match up to Tennessee. We have the history and tradition behind us. Those nattering neighbobs of negativity that did not think we could ever recruit winners here have been shown by coach Jones what can be done here. We don't pray for others to decline. We just want to return to our heritage.
in response to SevenT: The real reason the $EC wins is because they will take the dumbest headbangers on the planet and enrol them in some make believe academic program and somehow pretend they are student atheletes. The ACC, Big Ten and PAC 10 are far superior research and academic Universities so the idiots who end up playing football in the $EC would never make the grade in the ACC, Big Ten or PAC 10.

Hmmmm, you need to return those grapes to the store, dude.
in response to Orange_Beach: I can't recall Butch Jones being a highly sought after coach. He wasn't even the first choice when a spiraling out of control UThug hired him away from powerhouse Cincy team.

Yaawwnn. You must be a Florida fan. You are not classy enough to be an Alabama fan.
This from a coach in a 2 team conference. The same can be said for all the other non-SEC conferences.....................IF THAT!
I said all last year that he did not have the head to be taken in the pros and that he needed to grow up or his chance at millions would go down the drain. There have been dozens, at least, that had mega tallent coming out of college who flamed out because they were head trips. I guess they have wised up about giving out huge signing bonus for those. He should have hung around another year and tried to rebuild his reputation.
in response to RealisticVol: As more info has surfaced about Dooly's relations with local high school coaches and how his teams [ both Louisiana Tech and UT ] felt about him, his early avoidance of the media and the fan groups was a significant "tell" as to how motivated he was to turn things around. Apparently he thought he was so superior, it would just happen without extra effort. With an example like that, no wonder his teams played the way they did. I am SOLD on Butch Jones! His attitude, hustle, enthusiasm, winning record and attention to every detail on the field and to the fan base reminds me of Bruce Pearl. Troll swine don't even come back on Bruce's supposed dishonesty. Butch IS A DIFFERENT PERSON. He does not have to have the the same defects just because he has the same positive points.

I should have included the difference in attitude toward the former players. THAT above all else should have told us about Dooley! The players are the life blood of Volunteer football
in response to RealisticVol: It comes down to PRIDE. It does not matter how much ability you have if you don't use it every play. The play you goof off may be the play that COULD HAVE, WOULD HAVE won the gams. Do you have the pride to say "I don't want to look at the replay and have everybody thinking if McCullers had just played to his ability on that play, we would have won the game."

Game, not gams. I have got to change my keyboard or my glasses........or both.
Maybe starting under Dooley, he imprinted on Dooley's arrogance and entitled attitude and thinks it will just happen because he is so superior.

"The best catch of the day, perhaps surprisingly, was by big walk-on tight end Charles Folger, who made a leaping grab and held onto the ball despite taking a hard hit." There is a big lesson in that. A walk on made the play of the day through effort and determination. Talent is worthless without those attributes.
"got to learn how to manage some situations better." And learn how to manage himself better.
Tennessean of the year? Does this cover all Tennesseans or sports figures? I would not argue with a sports award. He has done a great job at Vanderbilt. Frankly, I did not think it was possible to do that at Vandy.
OK where's John? Who wrote this for him?
in response to Basketvol: Why the Broncos, Peyton? Why? A true Vol for sure. It's just painful to see him in a Broncos uniform. Anyone but the Broncos.

in response to Volunatic: Well, I hate to see him throw away his future like this. It would be nice if he could be dedicated to being the best player that he can be, and show that he cares about his team.If the rumors are correct about the reason for the discipline, then it IS a "family medical issue"-- his family needs to be involved in helping him get back on track, whether that is as a Vol player or not.

Good post. The number of haters writing on here is sad. Putting down the kid for having a problem is pathetic and shows more about the writer than anything else. I hope he can overcome his problem and make use of his talent, hopefully for us. I think it is very sad, that so many kids with multimillion dollar futures end up down and out instead. Other people would do anything for the chance to have a potential future like these kids throw away.
I admire his passion and think he is a great coach. His performance in recruiting and his team's performance on the field proves that. I am not going to put him down. I think that we now have a great coach and look forward to beating him and everyone else on the schedule.
in response to thevoice: The reporter was lied to regarding the lacrosse issue. I don't fault her for reporting what she was told. The interesting twists here include the facts that she's an Auburn alumnus and has multiple sources who happen to be former Auburn football players. Like everything else, guilty or not, all that matters is can it be proved?

Maybe she couldn't get the attention of the jocks when she went there and is on a vendetta.
I always wondered why anyone would want to go to that hick town to play football. Now I understand.
What an awesome story. Incredible girl and a first class guy. The kind the Vols need to recruit more of.
I am not sure I can be excited about a defense that has to have it's safeties be the leading tacklers.
I did not hear Orange blood in the kids response.
It is a hell of a lot better than Dooley's constantly telling us how bad things are and how poor our players are and how long it's going to take to turn it around.
Dickey was a great coach and athletic director for the Vols. The haters bore me. It appears that we are getting some coaches that know how to win and that is what is important. Let's just give them a chance to prove it or not.
Bizarre!
Cut James Kiffin Franklin some slack. Why should he apologize for a joke? We have completely lost our sense of humor in this country. That's the way it is when a dictator takes over and the political correctness police run rampant but we need a rebellion!
That is the trouble with bureaucrats making rules. There is no common sense. This society is coming apart because of all this false interpretation of equality turned into political correctness.
in response to rbwtn: I'm hard core Tennessee Fan and always have been BUT I'm getting a little tired of having my hopes dashed in almost every game in basketball and Football and one other thing when you have a Great Coach, that has put us on the Map nationally and told a little white lie to the NCAA instead of firing him Stick with him and don't be such a wimp. We would be over most of those sanctions by now and it's going to take a long time to get our basketball situation in order at Tennessee. I'm sorry to say, not because of our current coach but because of our current loosing Image. Now I hope we understand the Coach really has a lot to do with Recruiting and a winning attitude and shows it by his eagerness on the court and on TV too. The last A.D. destroyed the Image of TN for years!

People knew Hamilton was a bad pick when he was promoted. It caused a furor at the time. It just shows academics with a chip on their shoulder toward the free enterprise market system and, therefore, refuse to pay up to get the best, end up wrecking the system. Those who can, do. Those who can't, go into academics and hate the system they couldn't make it in.
"other SEC schools have reserve of anywhere from $50 million to $100 million." That is because, in spite of the idiot football haters, the football team has been drained of $6 million a year by the academic side, not the academic side being hurt by the football program. UT is one the few universities (2 or 3 I think) that has been getting money from their football program. Haters gonna hate though regardless of the facts.
in response to johnlg00: There are a very few guys regardless of position who hardly ever seem to take a direct hit from the defense. The great Jim Brown was one. As best I recall, Condredge was such a one and Johnny seems to be another. They just have a sixth sense for when a defender is drawing a bead and know when to duck or step sideways. Those guys are rare, though. As effective as Tee Martin was running on occasion, he took some awesome hits because he seemed to totally lack that sense I was talking about. I admired his courage, but I was surprised he survived the season.

Jim Brown could run around you or through you. I saw an interview with a hall of fame linebacker ( I can't remember his name at the moment) and he said one game he tackled Brown and Brown warned him not to do it again. Later he hit him again. The third time he went to hit him, he said Jim Brown turned and plowed straight into him and while he was laying there on the ground shook up, Jim Brown looked down and said "I told you not to do it again." The linebacker said he was never hit any harder by anybody.

Gee, you are even defending John Adams even when nobody said anything to defend. You really have gotten sensitized haven't you John? Or is it John's wife or some other relative. Unfortunately you have given it away by never commenting on anything else but your defense 99% of the time. LOL
I will make 1 point. Johnny Football hardly ever gets a hard lick laid on him. He is one of a kind.
in response to volnbig11land: Everyone certainly has a right to their opinion. I think it is a joke that he is even employed as a writer, let alone getting recognition for it. No, I don't expect him to write every article with orange ink. I do expect some articles to NOT be negative, and even on the rare occasions that he tries to write something halfway neutral, he still manages to put a dig in there somewhere. He consistently wrote negative articles even through our heyday run. I realize we are going through a bad period, but not EVERYTHING on the hill has to be so gloom and doom.

Oops, I mean he, not you, touted Strong. Point is Louisville beat Florida. Cincinnati went toe to toe with them and either coach has a lot more to work with at Tennessee. Jones has been a winner everywhere and it is a little early to be a nattering naybob of negativity before you have even given him a chance. Whining impresses the recruits favorably I'm sure-not! Well, this one will be here for five or six years, because UT cannot afford another payout. I watched Jone's players struggle to beat Duke. I watched Strong's team beat the heck out of Florida. What does this tell you about the type of players that Jones/staff recruit....loss after loss in the SEC.

I liked Strong too,....................after Franklin! However, your conclusion is flawed. Louisville had their coaching staff. Cincinnati did not and still won. Cincinnati played toe to toe with Louisville and only lost by 3 in overtime. Think how much better Jones can do with UT players, facilities, etc. Give him a chance. He doesn't need nattering neighbobs of negativity while he is recruiting.

Remeber, we can do better. His replacement was favored in 9 games with 8 NFL players. He won 7. That same guy that killed UT with his defections and recruiting just completed the worst year in college football history. Never has a team started the year as pre season #1 and lost 6 games. Than there was the Dooley. Nuff said. Bring on Sgt Carter and we will soon be looking at the 4th coach to try and replace the Legend. Thanks for running off Tajh Layne.

I suppose you are young but please learn the Vol history. Neyland was the best Vol coach in history by every way measureable. Almost every coach we have had for the last hundred years until the last two have had outstanding records. That is why we are the ninth winningest school nationally and second winningest in the SEC........even after the worst stretch in school history. Tennessee is one of the biggest bad boys of the century. Learn and be proud. We will be back!
This article shows in a nutshell why Fulmer could not coach anymore. Jason Witten was never used properly because the Fulmer offence just rarely used tight ends as receivers. Also not analysing recruits properly, letting Randall Cobb get away is a perfect example.
