Utah state just went 11-2, and Arky State just won the Sun Belt, correct? Not quite the patsy team we are facing in Austin Peay.

I like UT's scheduling with a solid OOC team every year (Oklahoma, Oregon, etc)

Written on Vols open season at Xavier, face difficult SEC road tests:

in response to mocsandvolsfan:

Well Mr. Hart Rumblefishman? You may be correct. IF you do the hiring and firing. Martin though in the past 2 years had little he could do to control injuries and the selection of NCdarNAA tourney teams.

He will be a little more exposed this year for how well he can coach talent. I have little doubt he can coach but team management may be the task. I expect him to be here next year regardless of the tourney process but I'm not Hart nor the powers that be. I'd say even the prospects out there are betting on him being here in 2015.

If you don't think that this is a "make or break" year for Martin...you need to get your head out of the sand.

Written on John Adams: Offensive line could take Vols for better ride:

in response to djohnnyg:

I can't believe UT scheduled Austin Peay for their first game.

Do u guys realize how horrible this program is?

I was raised in Clarksville and remember going to games at the old Memorial Stadium there. It is a very cool stadium. They had astro turf. Ahead of it's time actually. Anyway, they were in the OVC then but eventually got so bad they basically just left or got booted out.

I'm not sure they have EVER had a winning record. Seriously.

All of a sudden they are trying to build the program up by playing patsy to bigger schools.

I guess their pitch to recruits now is that they will get to play in front of 80k people and if their parents buy a special cable package they'll get to see them get annihilated on TV.

I wanna say last yr the Govs played at Wisconsin and lost 71-3. The game wasn't as close as the score indicated.

This really is the ultimate patsy. UT would have a tougher time with Little Sisters of the Poor or some small Baptist college in Kentucky with an enrollment of under 300.

Austin Peay gets hammered by the likes of Youngstown State or Valpo by 20+ pts every year if they're lucky.

Every big school has their patsy games and UT is no exception but this is not going to be any sort of test.

I think it would be better if they scheduled someone a little bit more challenging to get ready for the tough season.

Oh well. I guess it'll be fun watching em completely destroy the hapless Governors.

With the current way that the BCS is set up (and the upcoming playoff system), it does no good to schedule OOC teams that you could potentially lose to. Add to that, we are playing Oregon OOC.

As college football fans, we would all like to see our team(s) play other good teams in their OOC schedule. But, that ain't gonna happen friend. Schools have too much to lose ($), by suffering potential losses.

Written on Poll results: Over three-fourths at least OK with Vols' gray jerseys:

in response to Classof72:

What you've got is a uniform change that less than half the fans love. Nearly 1/4 of the fans hate this change. That's huge. Read the comments. You now have, basically, 1/2 the Vol fans telling 1/4 the fans to 'shut up and go home'. That's a disaster.

There can be no real recruiting advantage from new gray uniforms because the shoe companies can, and will, design new gray uniforms for any school. Teams can, and will, get any color they want. You won't be able to tell one from another. That's the point.

Few businesses can afford to alienate one out of four customers. Imagine how many more empty seats in Neyland Stadium this can mean. Of course, they can always paint the seats gray and point out the "Sea of Gray" to recruits and their families. Good luck with that. Go Big Gray? I don't think so.

Gray is cute, though. The U of Memphis has had it for years, though they seem to prefer blue. Isn't that special?

When you graduated....I was not even born yet.

I'm now 36, also a UT grad, and I think the new uniforms for a 1 time a year thing is just fine. Did you not see the video of the players reactions when coach introduced it to them in their meeting room? They LOVED it.

I do not think introducing an alternate uniform for 1 game a year is "alienating" the fan base. What are "fans" gonna do?--not show up if they wear gray? Don't think so pal.

Written on John Adams: Phillip Fulmer needs to look in a mirror before assessing blame:

Fulmer was/is right...management at UT was certainly effed up, to say the least.

Adams is right, Fulmer needed to go. Yes, I realize that he won the SEC east the year prior to his firing, but UT backed into that spot...certainly didn't earn it (not in my opinion)

I, for one, am thankful for the many years of success that Coach Fulmer has brought. For so many years we all enjoyed 10+ win seasons, conference championships, and a national championship.

11 days till the season starts!

Written on John Adams: Vols have to worry about more quarterbacks than their own:

"UT’s lack of a pass rush and its vulnerabilities in coverage likely will be exploited by a schedule that includes some of the best quarterbacks in the country, starting with Oregon’s Marcus Mariota.

Later, the Vols will have to deal with Georgia’s Aaron Murray, South Carolina’s Connor Shaw, and Alabama’s AJ McCarron."

Written on Heat coach Spoelstra attends Tennessee practice:

in response to DawgDayAfternoon:

The Heat sign LeBron James and that's supposed to make Spoelstra a great coach? I guess it works the same way for Butchie Boy, with Vol fans. Butchie inherits teams that Brian Kelly built, turns in a mediocre 50-27 record in those two bush leagues, and now he's a great coach. As for this charade being a motivational tool, one need only remember that Vol fans are also given to believing in the power of ceramic dogs too. It's 4-8 or 5-7 for the Vols this year. Enjoy the band and learn to accept it.

Your schtick of 4-8/5-7 is already old. How about you talk some actual football?

Oh...and I already stated in a previous post that anybody on this site could win with those 3 players. DawgDayAfternoon...more like JohnyComeLately.

Written on Heat coach Spoelstra attends Tennessee practice:

1. I bet the football team loved to hear/see Spoelstra...a guy who coaches the likes of Lebron, Bosh, and Wade--3 athletes that a lot of these players look up to. Not to mention the athletes he coaches against (Bryant, Durant, etc.)

2. Me, or anyone else on this site, could have won the NBA championship with those 3 on the team :)

Written on John Adams: UT's upset-minded fans should have Georgia on their mind:

in response to CCLC:

Are you two sure you're Vol fans?.... cause the O line was very good last year and will likely be this year as well.
"1. The offensive line

It's pretty easy to spot a strength on Tennessee's offense for 2013, and it's the big guys up front. The group's credentials: four seniors, 123 combined career starts and a likely NFL first-round draft pick at left tackle.

Tackle Ja'Wuan James and guard Zach Fulton remained entrenched on the right side of the line, James Stone is locked in at center and rising junior Antonio "Tiny" Richardson is back for his second (and likely last) season at left tackle. The coaches must replace Dallas Thomas, but Marcus Jackson and Alex Bullard were nonstarters who played very regularly last season. It'll be an important spring for the Vols to develop younger players for 2014, when the line must reload.

With an impressive combination of experience and talent, Tennessee's offensive line must be an anchor for the Vols as they transition to a new coaching staff, and if the 2012 season was any indication -- Tennessee tailbacks averaged better than 4.5 yards per carry and allowed only eight sacks in Tyler Bray's 451 passes -- the front five will be up to that challenge."

I don't know which is worse... the Vol fan base's football acumen or the Vol D secondary.

Well, look at what our record was with a great O-line and loads of offensive talent. Now, we still have a great O-line, and a fraction of the level of skill position players we used to have.

Then, we lose almost the entire line after this year, and have a ton of talented 18yr olds coming in. But, these 18yr olds are gonna need time (at least a year) to develop into SEC calibur players.

I'm just indicating that the fan base should be looking forward to an outstanding 2015 and beyond....not this year or next. What's so wrong/off about that assessment?

Written on John Adams: UT's upset-minded fans should have Georgia on their mind:

Reality is that we, as VOL fans, are going to have to give this coaching group TWO YEARS to see any improvement in the W/L column. This year's schedule is a beast, and with question marks at the skill positions...I don't see it being a very good year. Insert the incoming 2014 class...

We lose almost the entire offensive line, and have one hell of a recruiting class coming in. Don't see much improvement with 18 yr olds and an almost entirely new O-line.

Just my take on how patient we are going to have to be. Now, would anyone like Wednesday's Powerball #'s??? :)

Written on Orange and White Game offers road map for summer improvement:

1) The QB situation is glaringly bad. I hope one of these frosh coming in can do something.

2) Jones' stupid fist in the air on 3rd/4th down is just that...stupid. It didn't take, hardly anyone did it after the first series, and we ARE NOT the black panther party.

3) I hope Hill keeps this up! The combo btwn him and Neal should be great.

4) I didn't see much of the "hurry up" that they have supposedly been practicing on. A few glimpses here and there...but every team has that...aka "the two minute drill."

5) Nice to see some FG's being made. Palardy drilled a 52 yarder!

6) Great energy by the players on the field.

7) Defense looked mean. Good hits, and they were throwing our own offensive guys all over the field. Gotta love a defense with a nasty attitude!

I am really doubting our offense's ability to put points on the board this season. Yes, the RB combo is great, but easily stopped by teams loading up the box with no fear of us going over the top on them...which TN cannot do this year.

QB question with Simms and/or Bray starting. Simms had trouble and was replaced.--Breaking news there!

Tennessee currently has QB issues and one might be replaced if he doesn't perform.---Shocking insight! That doesn't happen at any other major college program anywhere!!--hahahahahaha

Seriously man??? How about some actual "reporting", instead of re-hashing something that every college/university goes through.

What is your point in this?--That if a QB does bad that he will be replaced by his competition?--Just brilliant! (insert sarcasm)

Written on Riley Ferguson embraces Vols' quarterback battle:

in response to BIVOLAR_BEARE:

I see your point, but I believe Peterman is a keeper..The man is a beast and working his arese off to be ready this Spring. I love our freshman qb's, (especially the rocket scientist) but neither he nor Ferguson are even close to being as physically ready as Worley or Peterman are. They need about 2 years of maturation in the gym especially before they're ready. I might add UT had no choice with Bray and had to throw him in way too early because Simms' was so horrible..

Worley has done nothing so far to give me any optimism about him. But, didn't Jones heavily recruit Peterman while he was at Cincy?

Written on Riley Ferguson embraces Vols' quarterback battle:

Written on John Adams: Losing Jay Graham is more than just losing a running backs coach:

Moving forward.....

Here is my vote for JG's replacement.....Todd McNair. He was Reggie Bush's RB coach at USC. He was hit with a 1yr show-cause from the NCAA as part of the Bush scandal. But get this...the crooked NCAA made that judgment/punishment on the basis of testimony from a convicted drug dealer/repeat fellon.

He can coach. He'll come cheap. And will produce exactly what Tennessee needs in a playmaking RB.

Bring on the haters....

Written on John Adams: Losing Jay Graham is more than just losing a running backs coach:

Ain't no way to sugarcoat this. This SUCKS!

I'm laughing at the folks trying to say this is "no big deal". Yeah right. Our RB's were better last year than they were the year before. Granted, some of that was due to a cohesive/returning offensive line, but the RBs definitely ran harder. Especially Lane.

People think JG was a failure b/c he couldn't recruit a 5* RB stud? Yeah, i'm sure it would have been sooooo easy to do with the instability in this program as of late (~5yrs). Both at coaching and administrative level.

And as far as the "race" card goes...well, you'll have to question the athletes and athlete's familiy (who are mostly black on any D1 team) as to why they feel more comfortable with someone of their own race. It may not be right, or the way it "should" be, but it's the way it is. Sure, the best man should be hired for the job. But when it comes to releasing your son to another father figure and being comfortable doing so...I'm sure many families are leaning towards someone of their own race, or at least a coaching staff with plenty of diversity within. There is not necessarily something "wrong" with that.
