Information on how to aid the victims of the deadly tornado in Oklahoma
1) The QB situation is glaringly bad. I hope one of these frosh coming in can do something.
2) Jones' stupid fist in the air on 3rd/4th down is just that...stupid. It didn't take, hardly anyone did it after the first series, and we ARE NOT the black panther party.
3) I hope Hill keeps this up! The combo btwn him and Neal should be great.
4) I didn't see much of the "hurry up" that they have supposedly been practicing on. A few glimpses here and there...but every team has that...aka "the two minute drill."
5) Nice to see some FG's being made. Palardy drilled a 52 yarder!
6) Great energy by the players on the field.
7) Defense looked mean. Good hits, and they were throwing our own offensive guys all over the field. Gotta love a defense with a nasty attitude!
I am really doubting our offense's ability to put points on the board this season. Yes, the RB combo is great, but easily stopped by teams loading up the box with no fear of us going over the top on them...which TN cannot do this year.

Uhhh....i guess you missed my point that this is not an "opinion" piece (as you woefully tried to suggest). Rather, he is just merely stating the obvious. And this is me questioning him/his editors on why he gets paid to state the obvious.
I guess you missed that. That's ok. We can't all be smart. After all...the world needs janitors! In case you missed the announcement....clean up on isle 3, bowler.
John Adams,Where in this article are you telling even the most "casual" of Tennessee football followers something they didn't already know???
Come on man. You acutally get paid for this??? Stick to womens basketball please. You see how many comments your articles on the lady vols generate, right?--hardly any.
QB question with Simms and/or Bray starting. Simms had trouble and was replaced.--Breaking news there!
Tennessee currently has QB issues and one might be replaced if he doesn't perform.---Shocking insight! That doesn't happen at any other major college program anywhere!!--hahahahahaha
Seriously man??? How about some actual "reporting", instead of re-hashing something that every college/university goes through.
What is your point in this?--That if a QB does bad that he will be replaced by his competition?--Just brilliant! (insert sarcasm)

I think the last time a team won the National Championship and failed to make the tourney the following year was the 1980 championship game (Bird & Magic) btwn Indiana State and Mich State. Neither team made the tourney the following year.
"UT snapped a school-record streak of six straight NCAA tournament appearances last year."
Who was the coach last year? Oh wait.....same as this year.
Unfortunately, inability to score these past 2 years is hurting. Let alone...the ability to make a freakin free throw.
And for those folks who said this year was "poor" b/c of the loss of Maymon....uhhh, they had Maymon last year and still underperformed.

When you don't score more than the other team, you lose.
in response to BIVOLAR_BEARE: That's true, Peterman was heavily recruited by Cincy/Jones, in fact, UT recruited him out from under Cincy as they were originally the leaders to land him.

Welp...here's to Peterman coming in and shocking us all this year!
in response to BIVOLAR_BEARE: I see your point, but I believe Peterman is a keeper..The man is a beast and working his arese off to be ready this Spring. I love our freshman qb's, (especially the rocket scientist) but neither he nor Ferguson are even close to being as physically ready as Worley or Peterman are. They need about 2 years of maturation in the gym especially before they're ready. I might add UT had no choice with Bray and had to throw him in way too early because Simms' was so horrible..

Worley has done nothing so far to give me any optimism about him. But, didn't Jones heavily recruit Peterman while he was at Cincy?
Anyone else get the feeling that this year is going to be a "lame duck" year for the QB position?
I get the feeling that Dobbs or Ferguson starting in 2014 is the "actual" start of getting this ship pointed in the right direction.
There has got to be A LOT more to this story. Where's the investigative reporting KNS???
He obviously felt that UT owec him for dismissing him, or had a grudge against event management for whatever reason.
Come on Mr. Wills!!! Let us know what's up! Call one of these crackerjack KNS reporters and give them the scoop!
Moving forward.....
Here is my vote for JG's replacement.....Todd McNair. He was Reggie Bush's RB coach at USC. He was hit with a 1yr show-cause from the NCAA as part of the Bush scandal. But get this...the crooked NCAA made that judgment/punishment on the basis of testimony from a convicted drug dealer/repeat fellon.
He can coach. He'll come cheap. And will produce exactly what Tennessee needs in a playmaking RB.
Bring on the haters....
Ain't no way to sugarcoat this. This SUCKS!
I'm laughing at the folks trying to say this is "no big deal". Yeah right. Our RB's were better last year than they were the year before. Granted, some of that was due to a cohesive/returning offensive line, but the RBs definitely ran harder. Especially Lane.
People think JG was a failure b/c he couldn't recruit a 5* RB stud? Yeah, i'm sure it would have been sooooo easy to do with the instability in this program as of late (~5yrs). Both at coaching and administrative level.
And as far as the "race" card goes...well, you'll have to question the athletes and athlete's familiy (who are mostly black on any D1 team) as to why they feel more comfortable with someone of their own race. It may not be right, or the way it "should" be, but it's the way it is. Sure, the best man should be hired for the job. But when it comes to releasing your son to another father figure and being comfortable doing so...I'm sure many families are leaning towards someone of their own race, or at least a coaching staff with plenty of diversity within. There is not necessarily something "wrong" with that.

Hell NO it doesn't count! My heart was racing WHILE ON the treadmill! ;)
or should i say..."i'll start with 13 miles"
For the benefit of both of us...place a wager on the FL game? I'll say 13 miles.

What else is there to say???---NICE FREAKIN WIN ON THE ROAD TENNESSEE!!!
JA says: "Talented, troublesome players have a recent history of not working out at Tennessee..."
Guess what JA????---That happens at almost every other school! Name me a D1 program that hasn't had a player(s) in trouble??
How many years of eligibility does Dyer have left? 2?
If so, take him as a walk on, and let him EARN his scholership for his senior year AFTER demostrated good behavior.
A 30 point beatdown on Kentucky almost makes me forget about the pains all season long prior to Saturday. Almost.....
This was kinda a fun article to read. A little "behind the scenes" of recruiting if you will. Keep'em coming.
why is this not deemed a hate crime? b/c the victims were white???

You sure are right....these bozos in the athl dept sure have made some chit decisions. No qualms against that.
However, they have taken a chance on a winner in Jones. I'll go ahead and reserve my spot on the fence in judging him.
Dooley? Hated it from the start. Kiffin? Don't get me started. At least Jones has won.
You gotta come up with some new material on why you don't agree with what's going on. Restating the same rhetoric is not gonna get you anywhere.
in response to SevenT: Dr. Witch I can see that my point sailed right over your head, so I will dumb it down for you (and your Fish Fry buddy). The NCAA knows that most major programs cheat (just like the IRS knows many cheat on their taxes). However some programs like Tennessee are repeat, over the top offenders who are blatant and reckless about cheating across the board. The NCAA really started cracking down on UT when two of the biggest dirtbags (Pearl and Kiffin) were hired by a complete bean counting, fund raising moron like Hamilton. And surprise surprise they found gigantic piles of cheating violations. Now the Football, Basketball, Baseball, Swimming programs are all on probation.

Agreed...the Fulmer argument is old and stale at this point.
I sincerely hope Butch brings his past winning ways with him. A "culture of winning" if you will. But, this year's schedule is brutal, and that could easily keep these players in the rut that they have been in.
Damn....it's hard work being a Tennessee fan ;)

Witchie,I don't think he's trying to garner attention. He's just as skeptical/pizzed off as a ton of other TN fans (take a look at actual attedance at Football, Basketball, Baseball).
I guess he just has more time on his hands to write the same thing many times over than the rest of us do.
in response to PUL4VOLS: Such bickering over what can become a very positive experience for Vols football players and possibly save some from themselves and horrible choices is sad. To all who are unreligionist, no one is being forced to go to a Bible Study. But do any of you know what the word Bible means? It comes from a Greek word biblion which simply means book. Now I feel confident that Coach Jones would also reward Muslims attending their preferred activities, ie Koran study or other religions in their observance provided they were atmospheres of positive energy. Maybe, just maybe he singled out Bible studies because there is a lot of Christian sentiment around Rocky Top. A lot of young lives have been positively influenced by study. I would love to see anyone on here with a problem in this regard say something to Al Wilson or to the late Reggie White when he was still with us. That might be very interesting. Finally, for all the nega-trolls, I happen to know there is secretly in the workings a STARVE ALL THE TROLLS DAY on this sight. Just wait, you know who you are, the DAY is coming...........

no worries. all your so called "tolls and nega-vols" are planning a FEED THE DELUSIONALS TILL THEY PUKE DAY.
Get bent. You ain't the police of this site, and folks are entitled to a different opinion than you.
Some of us (like me) are skeptical...and have every right to be. Some of us (like you) are head in the sand pro-tennessee no matter how bad of a decision the administration makes delusional idiots. And some (like notfunanymore) fall into your "troll" category, who live in the eternal hole of the past 5 years and don't see the light.
You are just as much an extremist as those you despise. Take a look in the mirror, pal.
Oh wait...you're going to go ahead and chastise me for sitting on the fence and not taking a side either way. Well, save it. I see the good that Jones has done in the past and "might" be able to do here at TN. I also see the failed experiments of the mid-major hires that UT has made.
Seriously...get off your high horse dude. You're as bad as the people you complain about.

Rather, what I think we need is a few kids (on defense) whose moral compass is a bit broke.
I would love to see exactly how thick the NCAA rulebook is when slapped on a desk.
You can give a kid a bagle, but not a bagle with cream cheese on it, b/c that would be providing a "meal". That's no joke!!!
in response to Olddogsrule: Weak reply, extremely obvious and very weak. However when my son was in middle school I'm sure he would have agreed with you. Hey, let's let it go. All of it. Past is past. All else is history. What is ... is. CBJ and staff are here for at least three years, with probably a few assistant coaching changes as always, and that's a fact. Does no good to always complain does it? What could you possibly hope to gain? Let's try to find a common ground where we can all support our Volunteers, warts and all.

Weak? Not so much.
I find it odd, that you yourself aren't skeptical....especially after seeing how the past 2 hires worked.
Alright...common ground. Here you go....I am happy with the decision to go with a coach who has been a winner wherever he has been (unlike the previous 2). I also like Jones' fire, and the way he fires up his players (from what I've seen online in his locker room speaches). I also think he did an ok job with his short recruiting window. Added bonus...some of the players he recruited hard at Cincy came to UT prior to Jones' arrival.
Fair enough?

in response to bspurlingcac#225603: I like it....and here is why! The coach in me thinks that this is an easy way to find out who the 10 worst behavior problems are likely to be. The Captains will pick the screw ups last in the draft. This will give the coaching staff a good read on the makeup of players. It will also help identify the players most likely to become leaders in the future(as they will be picked first). Just a thought…GBO!

in response to FanNotSheep: Don't get me wrong. I want Jones to succeed. But it's when I see and hear the guy speak that I'm reminded of the Buzz Peterson - to - Bruce Pearl transition. Now Buzz was a nice guy who said all the right things but somehow just didn't seem like the brightest string on the tree. Then Pearl comes in and not only fires up the fans and the students but quickly shows that he is a defensive coaching genius who can take a pretty horrible team and put them in positions where the other team can't bring the ball inbounds. Jones may be great and I hope he is, but he followed a great coach -- he did not take over programs on life support in a conference like the SEC. Winning at Vandy in the SEC is more impressive to me than following a guy who builds championship programs. I get the impression that Franklin is the real deal. Maybe I'm wrong and if I am we will know soon enough. But nobody really knew what Pearl could do until he got the opportunity with a big school with great resources. Personally I wasn't offended by Franklin's comments seeing as how he was trying to play David versus Goliath at Vandy, whereas Spurrier has tormented UT for decades. I think if Franklin had been hired at UT a few people would have female-dogged about it, but if he turned us back into contenders I feel real sure there'd be a statue at Neyland Stadium and a Franklin Boulevard somewhere around town. Moot points anyway since Jones got the job.

Actually, I think Butch reminds me more of Pearl, and Dooley reminded me more of Buzz. Jones is more animated like Pearl, and "to the point" like Pearl.
But you know...we both are "trolls and negavols" b/c we are on the fence about another mid-major hire, right?
If Franklin wins more than 7 games next year at Vandy....say goodbye. He'll be offered a job at a good Big XII (maybe Big10) school.
Any coach that comes in here and turns us into contenders will be able to punch a baby and kick a dog, and he will still be thought of as a god.

in response to FanNotSheep: Imagine how he could recruit with facilities and fans like ours, compared to being almost invisible in Nashville, with an NFL team and all. Franklin reminds me of Bruce Pearl, and I wonder if UT could have hired him -- I think they at least should have tried. After the past five years the Tennessee football program needs the kind of excitement this guy brings. You may be right and he may never be able to move Vandy into the upper half of the SEC. They did have a favorable schedule, not playing Bama, etc. But I admire anyone who can bring a dead program back to life -- and while UT football has a pulse, it's a long, long way from being healthy.

You may be right and he may never be able to move Vandy into the upper half of the SEC. They did have a favorable schedule, not playing Bama, etc. But I admire anyone who can bring a dead program back to life -- and while UT football has a pulse, it's a long, long way from being healthy.
I've seen a few of Butch's pre-game speechs with his players on youtube. He seems to get fired up and his fire up his players as well.
He's won 4 conf champs in 6 years, and that's at least something (even if they were with someone else's players and in weaker conferences).
What scares me is...it's obviously about the talent. Shoot...Dooley even beat Jones. I REALLY hope it was due to simply having better talent, and not being outcoached. If it was the latter...we are in for another LONG 3 year experiment.
You think UT fans would want Franklin? (not that us fans have much say in the matter) Especially after the way he spouted off when we beat them in OT 2 years ago, and his subsiquent rants from then on. That would be (almost) like hiring Spurrier. Oh the comedy!
in response to FanNotSheep: Just remember that he is having success at Vanderbilt. In football. He almost beat South Carolina. He did beat Tennessee. Then he out-recruited Tennessee. I'm over 50 and I don't know if Vanderbilt has out-recruited Tennessee in my lifetime.

Correct me if I am wrong...but he outrecruited TN simply by the # of players he signed, and not the "quality" of players. I believe TN ranked higher in the average start rating.
And yes, there is something to be said for having even minimal success at Vandy. Like I said...his kids play inspired ball.
in response to FanNotSheep: At the end of the day it will be the end of the day. Gosh I wish people would lose that phrase. Anyway, it's just another non-article from Climer telling readers what we already know. But while we are on the subject, the success or failure of this staff will be determined by how they coach, inspire and game-plan. Vandy is proof that a great coach (and yes, in my opinion Franklin is one) can beat teams with better talent. Then you must, as Franklin did, follow that up with upgraded recruiting. It feeds on itself. Success builds layer upon layer once the foundation is in place. We have witnessed the opposite: failure feeding upon itself, beginning with not having discipline, losing great recruiters from your staff, taking your fans for granted, believing your own press clippings, then hiring the wrong coordinator, followed by hiring the wrong head coach(es), and culminating in the loss of relationships with players who leave the program, recruits who go elsewhere, high school coaches and fans who feel ignored and unappreciated. The first thing you have to do is stop going downhill. Then after you level things out you have to start climbing. But the SEC is one steep hill.

I believe Franklin's team has not beat anyone with a winning record. He ain't that great. Though, he does inspire.
in response to dragon18: They are attendance numbers provided at UTsports.com. They were the only numbers I could find and they are not tickets sold. I can't verify the numbers but at least researched to get an official attendance figure from an official source. I should have sourced it in my post. I guess my biggest gripe comes from people that don't even know or research what they pass off as facts. Thanks for the input though. We all know that the program is a shadow of what it was in the mid to late 90s and that the past 5 years in particular have been unbearable. I just don't think you make a negative a positive by creating more negative. And in the post that prompted my reply I truly mean CREATING because nothing he said was factual.

Yeah, you pretty much blasted him on the other 2 points. Don't know where he got the 2.whatever average ranking from. Every recruiting site I visited had us at 3+.
Attendance is always fluffed up/padded by universities. They never want the bad press out there that folks aren't going to games. I would have loved to been a fly on the wall when Hart got the "actual #'s" reported to him ;) I'll bet his reaction wasn't pretty!
