Does anyone remember a company called Kodak? Kodak was a company that held on to its tradition too, and was scared to change. IBM used to be the powerhouse of the technology field and in the 80s and 90s was too slow to keep up with the latest trends in the market. I believe this is the situation here. Keep Up with the market, I love It. Go Butch Jones and Go Vols.

Right on the money with Kodak, but IBM still has over $100 billion in sales and employs more than 400,000 people.

Regardless, I like the new unitforms and the new attitude that seems to be coming along with them.

Written on Season ends for Vols in NIT opener, 75-67:

If you read the players' comments in yesterday's GVX, you could've seen this coming.

Kenny Hall: "I don’t think we have anything to prove."

Jordan McRae: "It’s just, I don’t know, really disappointing." "Everybody is still upset about it, you can see it on guys’ faces coming into the locker room."

That kind of attitude is not going to win many games, and it cost Tennessee last night.

Written on Vols try to turn attention off NCAA omission and onto Mercer:

The players need to take their disappointment and turn it into a motivating factor to prove the "selection committee" wrong. A loss to Mercer says "See, the selection committee knew what they were doing."

Maybe UK's loss will serve as a reminder that deserving to win and actually winning are two different things.

Written on Mike Strange: Another NCAA near-miss ups the ante for Cuonzo Martin, Vols in 2014:

in response to UTKin1992:

Exactly. Martin is not the answer...never was.

Also, on a side note, I'm glad to see my alma mater playing so well in other sports: Tennis team got hammered by UF, Softball got edged by UF, Baseball got destroyed by UA, then the basketball team falls flat for 2nd year in a row and misses the NCAA tourney.

Great job Hart! I thinks it time to have a come to Jesus meeting with the head coaches.

It must be nice to be so uninformed. For example, your comment that "the basketball team falls flat for the 2nd year in a row." If you're referring to the SEC Tournament, how about the 15th year in a row? Over the past 15 years, Tennessee has won 10 SEC tourney games and has never been tournament champion. I guess the AD du jour should've been having meetings with Bruce, Buzz and Jerry too.

The most recent rankings for softball has UT #6 in the nation. The mens' tennis team was also ranked #6 in the country. Will these rankings likely fall as a result of their recent losses? Probably, but their seasons are far from over.

With respect to baseball, that is a work in progress, and their uneven play is to be expected -- but anyone who's been paying attention would know that.

Womens' basketball managed a number 2 NCAA regional seed -- not the best they've ever had, but still pretty good.

And going back to mens' basketball, records of 21-13, 24-11 and 22-8 belong to which Tennessee teams? Three out of the first four Volunteer teams that Bruce Pearl coached.

So you and all the other glass-half-empty set need to get over yourselves and realize that things are not all that bad when put in the proper perspective.

Written on Rejection Sunday: Vols left out of NCAA tournament, receive No. 2 seed in NIT:

Yahoo characterized Tennessee's omission from the tournament as the worst snub of this year.

Written on Rejection Sunday: Vols left out of NCAA tournament, receive No. 2 seed in NIT:

For all you unthinking fools who believe that Bruce Pearl will be back, get over it because it's never going to happen. Moreover, if you look at the Vols' won-lost records over the past five seasons, with the exception of 2009-2010, each season pretty much looks like the other, with this year was better than the last two.

The Vols didn't play well during the first half of this season and lost some close games that they should've won. Their performance in the SEC tournament continued their streak of poor tourney play -- 10 wins in the past 15 seasons.

Nonetheless, Coach Martin has the team going in the right direction, both in terms of what he's doing with the talent currently on campus as well as in his recruiting efforts. He continues to deserve fan support during what will hopefully be a deep NIT run and next season, which should build on this year's success.

Written on Do you believe Butch Jones is the right choice to be UT's coach?:

When Urban Meyer was hired by Florida, he had 4 years of head coaching experience, 2 in the MAC and 2 in the Mountain West, where he won conference titles both years.

Butch Jones has 6 years of head coaching epxerience, 3 in the MAC where he won 2 conference titles, and 3 in the Big East where he won 2 conference titles.

I'm not saying that this guy is the next Urban Meyer, but he's proved he can coach. Moreoever, he wants to be here and turned down a good job at Colorado to take the Tennessee job.

He's going to have far more resources at his disposal than he could have imagined at Cincinnati, and, if he puts them to good use, can build a great program at UT.

Welcome Coach Jones!

Written on As Tennessee resets coaching search, Cincinnati's Butch Jones appears to be target :

in response to DukeDeLuca2:

Okay. My time.

1) Three months ago, we pulled a big upset over Jones and Cincinnati at Neyland Stadium. Dooley basically coached Jones' pants off. Perhaps that made us too optimistic for the rest of 2012, I don't know. But here's the question:

Leaving the stadium that day, if you were told that you could have Jones instead of Dooley for the rest of the rebuilding project at UT, would you have applauded?

A simple yes or no to the question will do.

2) Did we really fire Derek Dooley for this?

3) I haven't been for bringing Phil Fulmer back. Not because I don't think he's a GREAT coach! HE IS! Not because I don't think he would win. HE WOULD! I'm not in favor of bringing him back because our fans are too danged dumb to accept it. Our fans want someone young and pretty.

Butch Jones couldn't hold Phil Fulmer's jockstrap.

4) You can start the hoo-rah later. Can you really look at yourself in the mirror and say this is an improvement? Don't throw numbers at me - Cincinnati doesn't play in the SEC. Do you really think this is a forward move, a backward move, or a lateral move?

You lost any credibiilty with your opening sentence: "Three months ago, we pulled a big upset over Jones and Cincinnati at Neyland Stadium."

Tennessee didn't play Cincinatti three months ago. They played Akron three months ago. Nice job, bub.

For all of you who have gone off the deep end and are throwing tantrums like spoiled two year olds, this is the time to be patient and let the process work. There are plenty of good candidates left.

Davis or Petrino could likely be hired today, but the university probably thinks they can do better, and they probably will.

In the meantime, try to stop acting like idiots -- it reflects badly on the university and its fan base.

Why is everyone so twitched out about this? The university is going through its process. They will not be dictated to by a bunch of apoplectic fans acting like spoiled children who aren't getting their way, nor will they allow the Ringling Brothers of the modern day -- the media -- to set the tone for what they're doing.

Hiring someone in a hurry just to say you've hired someone doesn't produce the best result -- see Derek Dooley as Exhibit 1.

Tennessee will end up with a decent coach -- just let the process work.

Written on Charlie Strong spurns UT offer for new deal at Louisville:

in response to proudveteran:

To all the commenters, DO NOT BLAME AD HART on the rejection by Strong of UT. Sports Illustrated reported late this afternoon in an article by Pete Tramel, third paragraph, that the only contact with UT was made Sunday morning in Louisville by UT Knoxville Chancellor Jimmy Cheek!!!!!! Why is Cheek involved in the first place as that is the job of AD Hart!!!!! Cheek is an absolute loser. Come on commenters, junk on this and demand to know why Cheek was involved period.

If you believe everything that's been reported in the media regarding this search, then Jon Gruden would be our coach, and Mike Gundy would be our coach, and Charlie Strong would be our coach. The bottom line is they're all speculating as to what's happening, never naming any sources, and most of what they've said so far has been proven wrong. This should be put in the same category unless verified by a named source.

ESPN just stated that Gundy is staying at OSU and Tennessee is out for him. UT has no obvious consensus on who UT can get now that Louisville seems determined to keep Strong locked in with a fat contract. And so it goes...

Is this the same ESPN that had Charlie Strong penciled in as UT's new coach as of last night?

Don't believe anything until it comes from someone with University of Tennessee attached to their name.

Written on UT out? Gundy, Strong negotiating to stay at their schools:

The same "media" that's stirring this pot had Gundy a sure thing at Arkansas as late as yesterday morning.

Written on UT out? Gundy, Strong negotiating to stay at their schools:

Just to remind all you amnesiacs, Lane Kiffin left Tennessee on January 12th, roughly 3 weeks before national signing day and well after all coaching moves had been made.

What's happening now is in no way comparable to that disaster, where we had to make an immediate hire at the worst possible time in an attempt to save the recruiting class.

Written on UT out? Gundy, Strong negotiating to stay at their schools:

in response to DeltaCharlie3:

Yes, they are. It started when y'all ran Fulmer off and then embraced the devil (Kiffin) with open arms and gleefully celebrated his lone 7-6 season as being "back."

Then you settled for Dooley because NOBODY wanted to follow the Kiffin mess and commit career suicide by being caught up in that wake.

Now, coaches see a depleted roster with the slowest collection of defensive players in the history of SEC football, and the prospect of losing your best 3 or 4 playmakers on offense.

All that, combined with a fan base who will be all over you if you aren't beating Florida, Bama, Georgia, SC by year two, thus, making it career suicide to take this job.

Good luck.

So you're another one who doesn't remember that Kiffin walked out on UT in mid-January, after all the coaching moves had been made. We had to make a desparation hire in order to try to save a recruiting class less than three weeks from national signing day.

If you're going to say something, at least get your facts straight.

Written on UT out? Gundy, Strong negotiating to stay at their schools:

Get ready for Dooley 2.0

Hart needs to be fired for this circus alone.

This should end Charlie Strong talk.

Not really.

The headline says "Charlie Strong may get new deal". It did not say "will get", it did not say "has accepted a", it said "may get". Until that wording changes, he may or may not be in the mix.

That is, of course, if he is truly one of the candidates being pursued.

Written on UT out? Gundy, Strong negotiating to stay at their schools:

in response to volfan2002:

I think most of these guys showing interest do it only to better their position and salary at their present school. I don't think Strong really wants to take on the SEC of Bama, Florida, LSU, and Georgia he knows what a challenge that is to be successful. If he can get the same money to play Rutgers, Syracuse, and UConn is a much better deal. Gundy is really tied to Oklahoma State in every way, new house etc. He is just hoping for more cash and more power and he'll probably get it. Isn't this the reason we got down to Dooley last time? Wonder where were going this time.

Do you people not have any memory?

The coaching search to replace Kiffin started in mid-January, when all the coaching moves had already taken place.

This is not even close to comparable.

Written on UT out? Gundy, Strong negotiating to stay at their schools:

in response to asleep#212036:

I don't. He has gone after successful guys in BCS conferences and there are others (Golden, Fedora, Jones) he has contacted who also fit that bill. If Hart wanted a quick yes, he could have called a Mark Stoops or Gus Mahlzahn and we would have our coach. I'm glad he's trying for better. I'm sick of the assumptions by so many fans on this site that if a coach tells us "no" it had to be Hart's fault in some way. It is possible that maybe, just maybe, taking UT back to the mountaintop is just too daunting for some guys to risk it? Or maybe they, or their families, are happy where they are? I mean, at some point, an extra $500,000 doesn't really matter to a guy with $10 million, right? It's OK folks, this is not a Kiffin-Dooley situation, Hart will find our guy. Go Vols!!!

Another one of the few voices of reason...

Hart is most definitely doing a HORRENDOUS job with this hire. If you believe what is being reported that Gruden was never interested in UT from the beginning what exactly was Dave Hart doing for the week following the Kentucky game while Arkansas and Auburn were interviewing candidates? Not a peep out of UT which is why everyone believed UT had their guy. Now we are finding out for the 2nd time in as many hires that everyone on UT's list either doesn't want to come here, can't be sold on the merits of this program, or is just using an offer from UT to stay at their lesser program and up their pay. I'm over this Hart guy. He is no better than Hamilton. I'm sure his interview style is businesslike with no passion or conviction whatsoever about this program. Hart couldn't sell a rib bone to starving black bear if you ask me. You are entitled to your opinion. I'm sure you wouldn't have had a problem with giving Dooley one more year either.

I guess the only way you'd be satisfied is if Hart held a press conference every two hours to update the public, or better yet, call your house to let you personally know what's going on.

And do you really think that Arkansas or Auburn got a great hire? These were guys that were not even on Tennessee's radar -- by choice of Tennessee.

Stop actiing like a kindergartner who's just been told that they have to wait until after dinner to have dessert and let the man do his job.

Once someone has been hired, then you can roll into another tantrum about recruiting, record, experience, or whatever.

Written on UT out? Gundy, Strong negotiating to stay at their schools:

Unfounded rumor followed by speculation followed by unsubstantiated gossip. No facts to be found anywhere. Dave Hart may not end up with a great hire, but he's sure managed to keep the process shrouded in secrecy, which is actually a good move on his part.

Written on UT out? Gundy, Strong negotiating to stay at their schools:

Dave Hart is doing his job. Any speculation in the press from this source or that source is just that, speculation.

Two East Tennessee journalists have two very different stories from "reliable" sources about Gruden (he was never offered and wasn't ever interested; he was offered and they couldn't come to terms on the money needed for his assistants).

We've got CBS saying that Gundy was offered and ESPN saying that Strong is the guy. It may be neither.

And for those of you who think Dave Hart can't do a good job because he went to Alabama, that's like saying that Nick Saban won't do a good job at Alabama because he went to Kent State or Les Miles isn't dedicated to LSU because he went to Michigan -- i.e., it's just plain dumb.

This will all play itself out over the next few days, and then you can whine and stomp and hold your breath and burn your Tennessee gear all you want over who was or wasn't hired.

We are gonna get another up and comer (Strong) vs a proven winner (Bielema) for example.

They are looking at the same poeple, but Arkansas and Auburn are coming up short. Bielema hadn't really been mentioned for Tennessee, and Malzahn would've sent Vol fans into an apopletic fit. Arkansas talked to Gundy but he wasn't interested -- will either be coming to UT or staying at OSU.
