Written on Trae Golden leaving Vols: 'We wish him well':

Problems continue. Just saw McRae, Maymon, and Golden at the orange and white game (basketball article, but football offense looked terrible), and all seemed ok.
If it is grades, I think he could make it through summer school and fall semester getting his grades up, then able to play in January.
Between baseball stinking, disappointing football and basketball teams, this is just getting worse. There are problems on the hill that change of coaching just does not seem to help.

Written on UT athletic director Hart gets one-year extension, $50K bonus:

Amazing!! Why get a contract extension with 5 years still remaining? Why does he have a contract to begin with? You get paid for doing a job.
Why the bonus? Three major sports. Football was a disaster last year. Basketball--no NCAA tournament. Baseball--struggling again.
I just see no reason for contract extension and a bonus.

Written on Tyler Bray shut out at NFL draft, but Mychal Rivera lands with home-state team:

in response to RememberWhen:

you conveniently forgot to mention a defense that couldn't stop a lingerie team and a coaching staff that didn't have a clue how to motivate guys. But despite all that Bray led the 2nd best offense in a league that just had 63 players drafted! So PLEASE do tell us which games TN lost but should have won if Bray hadn't "choked"...and remember he averaged 30 points per game IN THE LOSSES!!!

Oh yes, coaching and a defense had things to do with it, but being a QB is more than just stats. Being a leader on the team.
Since you want some games where could have "came up" in the clutch:
SC last year. Make the read. Make the play in that drive. Not fumble.
FL last year. Numerous drives in 2nd half 3 and out. Bray was so anxious to get rid of the ball on two drives and not get hit, that if he would have been patient, had receivers getting open. He had time to throw, but was receiving pressure.
GA--last year. Did not finish the drive. Neal did have a drop, but Bray did not finish.

Do you need more?

Written on Tyler Bray shut out at NFL draft, but Mychal Rivera lands with home-state team:

I think it is more about him not winning than attitude or off field stuff. The NFL is a business. A business of winning or you are gone. Bray just could not win. He really had 2 very good receivers and another experienced slot. Throw in a good TE and a decent line, and add all of that together should have got us more wins. He usually choked in the pressure.

Written on Tennessee's Jarnell Stokes to announce intentions Saturday:

I hope he does stay as well. Good player but not great. I am no NBA scout, but right now his game just does not look like NBA material.
Cannot shoot consistently.
Free throws--50%
Rebounds good, but really only because of his big body and strong hands. Not technique. In the NBA, there are many big bodies with quicker feet.
Then, more important--he is still learning the game.

Written on UT announces details of April 20 Orange & White Game and 'fan appreciation' event:

in response to volaholic45:

I'm sorry - this is a lame event, but ironically fitting for a "fan appreciation day," since fans are played for suckers year in and year out.

So go stand in line, one autograph per, at 12:30 get your arse off the field and cool your jets for an hour and a half - nothing to do, skeleton concessions, no jumbotron, just sit there like the sucker you are and be thankful.

No creativity in this event, no marketing savvy, no will. How about a little concert or something in the dead hour? When will the powers that be learn that you need a little extra something something when your actual product on the field falls so far short of worshipful adoration.

"UT Announces Details of Fan Appreciation Event" the headline says - same details as last year, and the year before that. Pitiful. They're phoning it in. Do you feel appreciated?

I will be there. But, I somewhat agree with this post. Could be a lot better. Yes, free. Yes, free parking. Still room to do a real blowout and try to bring as many fans in as possible.
Clemson has many of their old players signing in the dead time after their current team goes to get dressed.
UT could have invited old players for free autographs or even charged a small sum for a donation or something.
Peyton and Eli are at Duke with Cutliff.

It is a long wait to get on the field for autographs for 1 hour. Then, a long wait in the stands waiting on the game to start.

Written on Mike Strange: In many ways, things seem same after Cunozo Martin's second season :

in response to johnlg00:

Yes, but "intensity" is not necessarily the same thing as "yelling and stomping". I would agree that there may be times when a coach might have to visibly climb all over a ref or a player, but those should be rare, IMHO. If a coach does that all the time, both refs and players will eventually tune him out. There is something to be said for a coach keeping his cool when things aren't going well, just as you would hope the players would keep theirs. There are many different types of demeanor for a successful coach, and not every type works for every particular team. I would welcome a LITTLE more outward display of emotion from Martin when necessary, but that is just not who he is and trying too hard to go that way would look insincere, IMHO.

Agree. Also, different players respond to coaches differently.
Like Coach K. He shows his emotion and works the officials constantly. Also, he has a "good" reputation so he gets the calls more times than not. In our own world, take Pat Summitt. She knew how to show her displeasure with her own players and officials and usually got positive results
Next year is a big year for CM, just like year 3 was for Dooley.

Written on Mike Strange: In many ways, things seem same after Cunozo Martin's second season :

in response to ULTIMATEVOLUNTEER:

(1)You left out a Wichita St win (which is proving to be a really good win).(2) which team on the schedule did UT need to beat to qualify as a big win for you? (3)Why would you think UT would get "blown out" since they were in 95% of games this yr? (4) Did you ever see John Wooden coach? I've talked with him about his famous Pyramid of Success-and how he used it in coaching. He said he did all of his coaching in practice and it was up to his players to perform in games. He never was"intense" and stalked the sideline during the games showing "emotion". There's obviously different ways to be successful.

Yes, did leave out WS win.
I would say the Georgetown game, as well as Alabama in the SEC tournament with their backs to the wall, and beating Ole Miss after they destroyed us at home, and could add Ok St, and or Virginia.
I think the committee people were saying we really had no good on the road or neutral site wins.
Yes, I did see Wooden coach. Different time and much different game now. He was a great coach, but now the game is so much more physical, and there has to be intensity or just loaded with great 3 pt shooters.

Written on Mike Strange: In many ways, things seem same after Cunozo Martin's second season :

Seems to be going the same road as Dooley. Lot of talk, but not any progress. First year no big wins and lost 2nd round of the little tournament. Dooley had no big wins and lost in a little bowl. Second year, had 1 big win, or maybe two (MO,FL both at home), and lost in FIRST round of little tournament. Dooley had no big wins and did not make a bowl.
Now, the third year we expect to make the big tournament and would to contend for SEC championship. No reason not to. Return experienced players and now two years of his recruits.
Watching these games last two days. You definitely see the Vols did not belong in the big dance. Free throw shooting to turnovers and we probably would have been blown out.
Would love to see Martin more intense in the games. Show some emotion and fire. Work the officials. It is part of the game.

Written on Season ends for Vols in NIT opener, 75-67:

Nice job!! That was just horrible to watch. So, Martin, do you really think you deserved to be in the big tournament? You had a chance to prove the selection committee wrong, but just looked horrible.
Can you show some fire? Martin just looks lost and always so thirsty.
Just out played and out coached. Poor free throw shooting again. Golden shot better when we were down 10, but we lost in every category.
Just looked terrible.

Written on Rejection Sunday: Vols left out of NCAA tournament, receive No. 2 seed in NIT:

Bottom line--same as last year. Almost like the Dooley years. Hope and plan of getting better, but in the end--not better.
We lost 1 player from last year, and did lose Maymon for the year, but we returned a lot of players with good experience.
They under achieve. Did make a run in Feb., but the losses to Ole Miss and Ga hurt us. The last AL loss, we scored 48 points in a 40 minute game, and shot 50% at the free throw line.

Written on Vols lose to Alabama, will play the waiting game for NCAA tournament:

Usually don't win shooting 50% from FT line. Free throws come back to bite us again.
Hopefully, we make it in, but I just don't know.
I have said all year, we go as McBrick goes. When he hits 3 or more shots we usually win. His shots opens up the lane for Golden to drive, relieves double team pressure on Stokes, and relieves pressure to score on Mcrae. Today he was 1 for 6.
Golden, Mcbrick, and Moore combined for 3/ 18 shooting. Moore plays good defense, but is such a liability on the offensive side. Teams just back away from him.
Last thing--I wish Guonzo would work officials more. It is just part of the game. Golden was getting "bodied" all over the court. Then officals would call a touch foul. Not that it cost the game as again shooting 50%from free throw line, 22% from 3pt line and 32% overall FG, will not win many games.

Written on Just McRae can't save the day for UT against Georgia, 78-68:

Had a good run. We need to finish with 3 wins. AU/Missouri, and at least one in the SEC tournament.
Mcrae was great. Hall played good.
Now, for the other guards. Richardson/Mcbrick/Golden combined for 5 for 29. Golden hit 1-2 at the end to give him those buckets.

Written on Fourth overtime Golden for Vols, 93-85:

BIG WIN. Team finally starting to play like everyone thought they should play.
I forgot what it was like to win.

Written on First road win of season a giant learning experience for Jarnell Stokes, rest of Vols at South Carolina :

It is a W and a W on the road. Difficult to watch the turnover game, but take the win.
Golden helped a lot today. Like I have said for 2 years though, McBrick is the key. When he hits the 3's, it opens up the lane more. Usually when he gets double figures we win. I think he was close yesterday with 8 pts. If he hits against Vandy we will win.

Written on Mike Strange: Are the Vols losing their basketball stepping stones? :

Vols on TV versus SC. Living in SC, I almost hate it when we play SC, and have to take the comments about--what happened to your sports teams. Not that SC is that good in basketball, but their football is now top 10 and their baseball is one of the best if not the best.
I remember looking forward to the basketball Vols being on TV with overachieving Lofton drilling 3's.
Now, I can barely watch the turnover laced game, with Martin just standing there drinking water looking confused.
But, will watch as that what us Vol fans do--and pray.

Tennessee REALLY should consider leaving the SEC in all sports. The powers that be....Cheeks and company have all but ruined the Volunteer tradition in every sport. The Vols are no longer SEC caliber. The talent level has become mid major and recruiting is even worse. The basketball and football coaches are low caliber has beens or wannabes and until fans stop supporting second hand coaching it will only get worse. STOP ATTENDING UT SPORTS AND CHANGE WILL COME. For Georgia to beat Tennessee in basketball is NOT acceptable. For Vandy to beat Tennessee in football is NOT acceptable. WAKE UP VOL FANS. Only YOU can stop the bleeding by NOT attending these pathetic sports events. Money talks.

I thought the same thing.
We are a joke in almost every sport. Even womens basketball is on the decline.
Why are we always hiring a up an commer for our big sports. The SEC is now not the place to learn and develop.
Ohio St did not go and hire a coach from Akron and let them learn. They went after a NC coach, paid him the big money and will win a NC withing 5 years (of course they play in the Easy 10 conference). Point though is now it is just too tough to learn on the job. The big schools go after the big time coaches and have to pay them the big time money.

Written on Butch Jones says Vols were 'selective' :

in response to pingkr62:

If anyone is interested, RIVALS.COM lists, and ranks all Division 1 recruiting classes from 1-112. Take time to look at some of the schools who were ranked well behind Tennessee. It makes a 20 or 21 ranked class look pretty good. G.B.O.!!!

Problem is the teams ranked ahead of TN is the teams we play.

Recruiting is not a exact science, but definitely better to have more 4 and 5 stars than 2 and 3 stars. Always will be the exception and the busts, but recruiting has to get in the top 10 for the next few years.

Written on Butch Jones says Vols were 'selective' :

Turnovers--just like the men.
Not unexpected anymore. This university just does not win. Even in our most winning program, now is just so-so. Winning more than losing, but not the once power team year in and year out. Of course, lost the legend coach, but still losing more than I thought they would, especially to teams we should not lose to (Missouri, UTC, etc.)

Written on Arkansas' in-your-face defense too much for Vols, 73-60 :

in response to volthrunthru#658770:

UT Basketball is in the middle of another Hamilton-Hire meltdown. This team looks lost a lot of the time---almost like a playground team that has not practiced being in specified positions on either offense or defense.

Since this is not smellevision, we only know they look as if they stink. Players here during Pearl's last (worst) year have regressed. Nobody plays defense or goes toward the rim. UT stands for Unbelievable Turnovers. The # have been amazing, yet continue.

They do not know dribbling is best done with eyes open, or crashing boards works best near board, or 3-point shots are at least supposed to hit rim or backboard or net or something connected. Maybe they need a note in their mittens: "Winners take care of the basketball and play better defense than losers." Maybe somebody could show them and the coaching staff what defense looks like. Nobody in either group knows.
UT has replaced Hall-of-Fame Fulmer with NACAAproblemsKiffen, Can'tWinInTheSECDooley, lost-to-Dooley-Jones, and replaced-Pearl-with-Martin---whose staff delivered horrible basketball once again today.
Three people who orchestrated the demise of Athletics: PresOfTheWeek/Cheek/Hamilton. They became PresOfTheWeek/Cheek/Hart. A among them they have decimated what Dickey, Fulmer, Pearl, Delmonico & Summitt built.
This group played Bruce Pearl, saying they would back him, but left him hanging with the NCAA; had a Swimming Coach w/morals problems, a baseball coach who replaced Del Monico, but was not SEC caliber; yet the replacement’s replacement had to apologize for last year's performance.
.
When Bobby Knight, himself a hall of fame coach, all but says this UT Basketball Team is poorly coached, you gotta wonder. But it is the same in almost every major sport. This is what almo$t $500-million dollars athletics budget spent have bought since Hamilton fired Fulmer on Homecoming Week Monday, knowing it would demoralize the team.

The governor needs to have the administration of the program investigated by a special master or panel.

The program is gasping for air, but most writers and reporters in Knoxville do not have business degrees or business experience, so do not understand how much trouble the program REALLY is in. These news people have no idea of accounting procedures. They cannot follow the money, because they do not understand financial books. They are reduced to being cheerleaders or excuse mongers to keep getting quotes.
UT’s is a program whose peers are flush financially, yet borrows from its school to fix the fix that was supposed to be the fix for firing Fulmer. Fulmer's real problem was that Cutcliffe got a golden job, later in that season than this, when Dooley was fired---so Fulmer had to quickly find an OC, and those available were not good at all. Presto! Hall of Fame coach gets fired.

UT athletics needs to be looked at by people other than insiders and twenty-somethings with bachelors degrees in journalism.

Agree 100%. The overall athletic program is such a big mess. We have everything for winning, but winning. Huge stadiums, huge following, top facilities--and yet we lose in almost every sport.
I like Butch Jones and hope we have success, but a up and comer will have difficulty winning in the SEC. You have to go after the best and has a winning reputation. Having 1 bad recruiting year in the SEC will kill you. You have to be top 10 year in and year out in recruiting.

Written on Arkansas' in-your-face defense too much for Vols, 73-60 :

Same ole story. Turnovers. Not only from the fact of no point guard, but just overall fundamentals in ball handling.
Not sure where they think they are tough on defense. We made the Henderson from Ole Miss all world, and Vandy had a kid that had a career night, now this kid from Ark had one of his best games. Ark. had 7 turnovers for the game--so we are not that great defensively.
McRae 2-11, McBrick 1-6 and Moore 1-4. McRae looked terrible handling the ball. Missed shots all night.
Need to keep Stokes on the box and not out on the free throw lane. Hall and Stokes had a good game. I think both were 6-7 in FG.
Martin just reminds me of Dooley. Good guy. Running a clean program. Just cannot win. Team looks worse in year two than year one. Should be better in year 3, but that was what I thought about Dooley and the football team.

Written on UT's prayers answered as Vanderbilt misses chances to win at buzzer:

Take the win, but they have to get better. Last 2 games we barely won at home against not the better SEC teams. Bottom line it was a W
Stokes does better moving the ball quickly. When he holds it to long, it becomes a turnover to often.
They key to this team is McBrick and his shooting. Like Humphrey for FL a few years ago. Humphrey would keep defenses from collapsing in the middle. McBrick needs 3-5 3 pointers a game.
Big free throw misses down the stretch or this would have been a 4-7 point win.

Written on Vols have reason to smile, 54-53 over Alabama :

I enjoyed watching the team play. It was a great atmosphere with an exciting finish. So happy to see our players go off the court smiling. They have had some tough breaks but havnt given up. I plan to be there to see them beat Vandy on Tuesday.

Good for you. It was good to see them smiling. Had half the turnovers as previous game, so that helped.
Need the Vandy win as they are not very good.

Written on Vols have reason to smile, 54-53 over Alabama :

Take the win. Was not pretty, but bottom line is TN did better than the other team on the court today. Had less turnovers, even though ball handling is still a big issue. Missed clutch free throws, but still better than AL today.
McBrick should have red shirted as well--if his elbow is the problem with his shooting.
Even with the win, this team is just so hard to watch.

Written on Marshall Henderson talks the talk, walks the walk as Ole Miss sweeps UT, 62-56:

As another posted, just like Dooley's team. Faltered down the stretch. So much for payback.
They just are not winners. Almost every sport is just a huge disappoitment.
Key points I thought in the game.
Not going to win many games doubling your opponent in turnovers. 21 turnovers!!
These are not freshman playing their first game. This is coaching. Fundamentals in practice.
Down the stretch. One 3 pt shot by McRae in last 5 minutes of the game. FOUR missed free throws. Again, not going to win many games when you only score 3 points in last 5 minutes of a game. Good time out plays GM.
Overall just hard to watch. They have talent, but just cannot win.

Written on Which player is most vital to the success of UT men's basketball the rest of the season?:

I believe we go as McBrick goes. If he can hit 4 or more 3's a game we usually win. Really, more like just hit at least 3.
When he hits the 3 opens it up for Golden to drive and will free up Stokes more.
No reason he should not hit at least 3 of those shots. He has played for 4 years and his shot looks no better than when he was a Fr. He has many open looks. He hits 1 every now and then, but if he can hit the open three it will open things up more for the rest.

Written on Kentucky pulls away from Vols, 75-65 :

I agree the loss is not on the refs, but KY sure gets many calls. Vols had their chances. Free throws still a issue and look to be all year. Only 1 TN in double figures. Golden had 5 turnovers and 7 pts. Richardsons two free throws near end of game were just embarrassing.

Now, on the refs. Again, Vols did enough to lose game, but KY really got some help. Both teams play aggressive defense. Hard to see how one team has 25 fouls to another 17. Not saying TN did not commit the 25 fouls, just saying one could call the same foul on the other end.
Difference is Cal works the officals constantly. Every call against KY he goes crazy. Wants a explanation. Martin just stands there with a smirk on his face.

Written on What place will the men's basketball team finish in the SEC?:

Agree with comments that most players are not playing better than when Martin arrived. Can say due to Maymon not playing, but that is always going to be the case with players coming and going.
McBrick is really off this year, with Golden not far behind. What did they do in the off season? Definitely not practice free throws.

Written on Third straight loss for Vols:

Not going to win many games with a more than double turnover ratio. TN 16 TO to AL 7.
Free throws again hurt. 50% from the free throw line just don't cut it. Stokes cannot even play in a close game due to his free throw issue. Maybe he should spend more time practicing FT's as opposed to the tatoo parlor.
Team just seems to be getting worse. Just like the Dooley teams.
Would like to see Martin lose his coat and work the officials more. That is part of the game. Coach K works them constantly. So does Cal at KY. Martin just seems to try to be cool and drinks a lot of water.

Written on Vols lose to Ole Miss, 92-74 in SEC opener:

Embarrassing!!
It just seems the basketball team is taking the same Dooley road. First year you like the effort, and everything about the coach. Year two, same good guy, but results seem to be worse. Just makes you wonder what year 3 will be like.
Martin's recruits just provide little contribution, and the experience players like Golden and McBrick seem to be worse.
McBrick 's shooting just keeps getting worse.
Mcrae has had two good scoring games in defeat, but he is just so streaky.
Game thoughts--Ole Miss 44 free throws to TN 26?
Also, they shot almost 87% from the line. 87%!!
One last football comparison. Every football game, our opponent seem to have a "career high", well same from that kid from Ole Miss--a career high.

Written on Poll: What position is the most critical for the Vols to focus on in recruiting?:

A QB for sure. In football, the QB is the start.
Biggest recruiting need is an upgrade in talent. Need 4-5 stars as opposed to all 3 stars. Yes, there will be the bust 4 and 5 star recruits and the 2 and 3 stars that play like a 5 star, but year in and year out the teams with the top recruiting are the teams winning.
Not going to win in the SEC with mostly 3 star players and "coach them up". AL/FL/GA are getting 4-5 stars and coaching them up.

Written on Vols can't overcome deficit against Memphis, 85-80 :

Hard to watch. We use to always take it to Memphis, now we have lost what 3 in a row. Thank goodness Mcrae hit a streak or we would have lost by 30 at home.
Team just seems worse this year. Kind of like Dooley's tenure. Little fight 1st year but with some close losses, then got worse with each year.
We are only missing Tatum from last year. Granted Maymon has not played and something surely does not seem right there. He jumps up and down on the bench. Could he not do that on the floor?
Mcbrick just cannot hit consistently. He is a 4 year player.
Golden looks worse.
Mcrae is so streaky. Who knows when he will hit another outside shot.
Stokes is not that good. Also, a liability at the line.
This team needs to step up in a weak SEC this year. Right now, almost every player looks no better, or worse from last year (except Richardson). Although Richardson's miss dunk was inexcusable. New players to team cannot score in a empty gym.

Written on Vols hold off Western Carolina, 66-52:

Just do not look good. I hope Maymon can return before the SEC. Also, hope it is not the Dooley coaching technique. Best his first year, then drop each year.
Team wins or losses most games with Mc's. If Mcrae and Mcbrick hit well--we will win most if not all games.

Written on Report: Zach Azzanni new Vols receivers coach :

Time to start making some headway in recruiting.

Written on Are you confident in athletic director Dave Hart's ability to land a quality coach?:

Hart had to start this process around mid season if not had a good idea after 2011 KY game. Any AD with half a brain could have seen that this boat was going down. Granted, one should wait and see how we play through mid season, but when we were struggling against the mid majors and could not beat a so so Miss St. team, he should have developed his short list.
Now, why did this Gruden thing go on so long. If he was not a candidate, get that out there on day 1 or 2.
No way Hart could have thought Gundy was going to leave his school that he played with and have coached with for the last many years. Just built their "dream home". Of course, he was not leaving. Don't even let his name get mentioned, as now it looks like he turned his down.
If Strong said he had to think about leaving Louisville, then I would have pulled the offer. If he has to think about coaching in the Big Easy/ACC over a large SEC school, then I would not want him. Especially, since Louisville is not where he is from nor a football school. Good guy, but not one we need to take on AL, FL, and GA.
This has gone on way to long, when I think he should have had a good idea who he wanted around end of October.

Written on Mike Strange: Virginia, Georgetown, it's one long struggle for Vols :

Just terrible.
Year 2 is starting like Dooley's year 2. Martin has to get the going. To many returning starters and players to be looking worse in year 2. (Even with Maymon out)

Written on Louisville coach Charlie Strong meets with players:

Agree with other posts. Not sure you want a coach that would rather stay at a Big East or now ACC basketball school as opposed to coaching in the SEC. TN has far greater facilities, tradition, fan following than Louisville ever will in football. He should JUMP at the chance regardless of money.

Written on UT out? Gundy, Strong negotiating to stay at their schools:

Gundy was never was going to leave OK ST. He played high school in OK, college at OK ST, and just finished a big "dream home". Duh, why even interview him. Anybody could have seen the ploy to get a bigger contract at OK ST.
Concern for Strong is that if he does not leave Louisville, then one would have to wonder about him. Not leaving a basketball school to coach in the best football conference says you are not a competitor. If he is happy at Louisville (not a place he was from orginally from), then I would not want him anyway. He is afraid of real competition.

Written on Mike Strange: Vols score 36; fluke or omen? :

When the Mc's miss, we miss. McBrick and McBrick II just cannot hit consistently.
Plus you are not going to win many games shooting 27% from the free throw line.

Written on Philadelphia report says Eagles keen to hire Gruden:

If Gruden wants NFL, there are a lot better options than Philly. I would not count out TN. If wife wants back to TN, this is her chance. Gruden gets paid big regardless where he goes. He gets paid big if he stays at ESPN.
It will be where they want to live and raise their boys.

Written on Reports: Arkansas has made an offer to Jon Gruden:

in response to govolsn3:

If GRUDEN does take the job, how long is he going to get to win a national championship 1 or 2 years. Just saying, that is what most VOLS fans expect is going to happen and it just insn't going to. No matter who takes the job the very best is 4-5 years to get a SEC championship and that is only if the next coach can recruit. GRUDEN is a big name but can he go into a kids house and convince mom and dad he will be there to take care of their kids. If GRUDEN was to turn around a win or play for a national championship, he would bolt for a huge pro contract the following year. Just doesn't make a lot of sense to me for him to be interested in UT. GO VOLS>>>VFL

The problem with the NFL is where the vacancies will be. Philly, Jets, maybe Cleveland, Raiders--again.
Gruden will not want to go to any of those teams unless just the great NY.
Cowboys maybe. Gruden would not want another over the shoulder owner.

Written on Who should Tennessee go after as its next coach?:

Gruden should be the #1 choice. He has the charisma to recruit and has good coaching past experience. Mostly pro, but some college. Recruiting is the priority in college. You can only coach so many less skilled players versus a team with far superior skilled players. There are the 3 stars that are better than their rating, but year in and year out a team stands a better chance of winning with top 10 recruiting.
We have a advantage with Gruden's wife being from East TN. If she has that in her blood, she we want to return to this great place. To raise their 3 boys here will be far better than NFL cities.
I would throw the pocket book at him. It would be well worth the dollars I believe. Gruden has to be able to recruit better than Dooley. I think his brother is the o-coordinator for the Bengals. The Gruden hire would definitely set the college world on edge.

I think everyone wanted to Dooley to succeed. He is a good person, but not ready at this level. Maybe he will never be, but bottom line is a change has to come.
Dooley's best year was his first. It has been down hill ever since.
Hopefully, Hart has had a plan and not announcing Dooley's departure for a reason. Hart surely has begun the process very quietly, because the next coach has a lot of catching up to do.
