Whatever Bruce's Pearl's buyout at Auburn, $5m, pay it and be done, bring him back. Give him a 5 year contract for $3m per year, and with the caveat he leaves or we get on probation--we won't--in that time he pays $5m. By the 3rd year of the contract it is a bargain, and he gets a 3 yr extension, with a 2m bump.

Pearl if hired here can and will dominate Memphis, and it as a recruiting ground is prime for our picking if he returns.

Please, for the love of the vols, buy him out at Auburn and bring him home.

If this sounds absurd, ask FL fans about how absurd it was for Billy D to leave, change his mind, and whether they have any regrets bringing him back.

Hire Pearl Now, before it is too late.

Shame on you for being drunk on Good Friday.

in response to fannotsheep:

Was the petition really a referendum on Martin or was it mainly a wish to get Pearl back? The deep pocket boosters who allegedly refused Martin use of their planes should be ashamed and reprimanded by UT officials if true.

But all along I heard some or at least one major booster opposed bringing back Bruce. Also heard some brass said no way. Who was it? Apparently the message got through to Pearl or he might have waited to see what would transpire. No way anybody thought Martin would stay after he caught fire. Nothing to come back to and a great chance to go elsewhere.

I'm sorry Martin left. As I said many times he was a fine man and might be a really good coach. He does need to recruit better players, but maybe he is a better judge of talent than the ratings services. He won't put up with prima donna stars, I am sure.

But the regret that stays with me is we lost Pearl. I am sorry Martin got his feelings hurt. I am sorry players and others felt it was about race. I'm sure it was to some but not to me. If a green and yellow polka dot guy with tattoos on his eyelids could coach like Pearl and recruit like Pearl and excite like Pearl I'd want that guy.

The problem is we are not likely to see another coach like Bruce Pearl. The reason he was an instant ESPN star was the reason he was a very special coach. Thanks to the NCAA's vendetta we were robbed of our coach. If there are people at UT who prevented his return I want proof that they are more valuable to the school's athletic program than he was. I will hold my breath until someone takes responsibility for the real crime and the biggest loss the program endured.

Signed, the blue boy in the corner.

Why can't the BBB types get it that Bruce is not here because of Bruce. No one told him to break recruiting rules. No one forced him to then lie about it. He would still be our coach except for his own stupid, arrogant actions. Why blame this on other people?
If you think the NCAA has it out for UT, imagine their reaction to UT rehiring him. Imagine what good parents would think about sending their son to be moulded by a cheat and liar. I actually do like Bruce but this is no ones fault but his own.

I totally blame the local media for this mess. The sport show host told us Conzo Martin would be fired if he didn't make it to the NCAA tournament. Then they led us to believe that the UT administration would not consider Bruce Pearl as his replacement. A petition was circulated by fans who felt that the UT administration was not listening to them. It was a petition to hire Bruce, not fire Conzo, who barely made it to the tourney. Now the talk show hosts, John Pennington and Will West, are calling the fans idiots after they had misled the public. Maybe they should be looking in the mirror.

So exactly how do you hire Pearl without firing Martin?
Saying the petition was about not being listened to is indeed among the more idiotic statements on here. It was about a bunch of morons whining about hiring a guy who exposed UT to recruiting violations and then lied about it to the NCAA. And by the way asked recruits/parents to lie. Not who we need at UT. So don't try and hang this mess on the media's neck. It belongs squarely on the instigators and signers of that stupid petition.

I really agree with your comment regarding team ball. I know lots of folks got aggravated with Meighan for shooting so much but I think there was a problem with other kids not demanding the ball as well. I suppose that it's unanimous among UT fans- disappointed not to get her, but glad UCONN didn't.
I said before that I thought that it would be UCONN or USC. The reason- UNC' coaching situation is up in the air with Hatcher's illness. UT unfortunately seems to be a fading program. UCONN could almost guarantee her a national championship. USC is close to home, plus an up and coming program with real national championship potential. That's the way I see it.

If that's the way you see it - get some new glasses. LOL. No way a fading program. We had the #1 last year and have two McD AA coming in. Including the winner of the skills and 3 pt shooting contest.
Strength in the conference is good for us and further serves to isolate UC in a weak "conference". I can't even figure out who is in that conference (American Athletic?).
My view was that the Lady Vols played some of their best basketball in several years this past year and are loaded with young talent.

I have to admit that I've been on the fence about Martin. I've spent the better part of his 3 years thinking he was not the right man for the job. I felt that his team's underachieved. Respected his character though and would have never signed that stupid petition. What I take exception to though is your statement about those who never set foot in a classroom. Although I agree with you about what the institution is for I would wager that if you removed all the folks in the stands at Neyland or Thompson Boling that did not attend UT you would cut attendance by at least half. Your statement seems to say that unless you have a degree from UT then you don't have a right to root for its athletic teams.

See why you think that so let me clarify. No I don't think you have to have graduated from UT to be a fan of the sports teams. I do, however get frustrated when those folks care only about whether they have fun on Saturday. Some of those folks don't care about the schools reputation, don't care that there are role models for student athletes who perhaps need role models. Don't care if we recruit really bad actors as long as they can run fast.
Don't get me wrong, I love it when we are successful with our athletics. I am crazed in the stands. But, there is more to a university than athletics and I am really bothered that the folks who only care about sports have undermined a good successful man and brought shame to an institution I love - the whole institution. VFL is not just for athletes and athletic fans.

This was a man who grew up in East St Louis and beat cancer. I don't think he was scared of losing.

As a matter of fact I will root for the Cal Bears now if for no other fact I am embarrassed at the way Coach Martin was treated here at UT.
If you think winning is the ultimate bottom line you've got bigger problems than I can begin to enumerate here.
He won enough to be one of three SEC teams in the tournament and made it to the sweet 16. Bruce sucked his last year at UT. So no, I don't think he left because he didn't feel he won enough. I think he left because he didn't want to put up with the cow paddys from the redneck sections of the fan base.
So why don't you get real. If you were actually a real Tennessee fan you would realize this is a very bad development for the University. Of course there are a lot of "fans" on here who don't give a rats rear about the University only about the football and basketball. This is a sad day for all UT alumni.

Why would the man be loyal to TN at all? Some of the redneck fan base hated him the moment he stepped on campus. Then someone thought an online petition would be a great idea. Do you think his family saw that at all?
BTW - Bruce LIED, LIED, LIED to the NCAA!!!! He should never coach in college again and it would have been an absolute travesty for UT to have anything to do with him again. The LVs would have been fortunate to have hired him as head coach. Certainly, I commend Holly for her many years of dedication, commitment and loyalty to the women's basketball program at UT. However, none of these qualities can assure that she will be a good head coach. Wes Moore has a proven track record as a quality head coach.

Sure he is a good guy. Hopefully Holly will have us back in the final four in the next couple of years and coulda woulda shoulda will be moot.

Written on Informal talks between Lady Vols and UConn about resuming series:

Theo, please. Wes Moore, formerly coach of the women's basketball team at UTC (University of Tennessee at Chattanooga) is a college coach and a very successfully one at that. He presently coaches the women's basketball team at North Carolina State. If Holly was not awarded the position of head coach other than loyalty and longevity, then, pray tell, what was the reason? She had no experience as a head coach. She did have experience as an assistant coach at Nebraska and VA Tech.

Well, you missed the tongue in cheek inference that coaching at UTC is the same as coaching high school. But, I also thought he was still at UTC so my bad on that.
Regarding Pat's reasoning for selecting Holly, I would say she might have felt Holly had learned everything Pat knew over the years regarding recruiting, scouting, player development, game planning and management, athletic department politics, ncaa rules, player psychology, work ethics, chalk throwing, whistle blowing, foot stomping, arm folding, glaring (alright no one will ever do that like Pat) etc., etc.
In short, Pat worked with her everyday and knew exactly what she had been exposed to, what her strengths and weaknesses were and the fact that there was no other human on the planet more dedicated to keeping the Lady Vols at the top of the women's game. Don't you think it speaks to Holly's commitment to UT that she didn't go somewhere else when opportunities arose? She could have, by this time in her career, been a head coach at another major program for 15 years.
The crab apples on here really fail to see what we have in Holly. I look forward to witnessing crow eating over the next few years.

Written on Informal talks between Lady Vols and UConn about resuming series:

in response to CaptainPicard:

The LVs have the greatest fan support in WCBB. They have great facilities also. Be that as it may, any coach would have trepidations about following a legend like Pat with the exception of Geno. Holly was given the position solely because of her 25+ years of loyalty to Pat. Wes Moore would have accepted the position in a heartbeat despite the trepidations.

I'm sure he would as would any other high school coach in the country. You surely can't think he would be a serious candidate.
I totally disagree about Holly being awarded for loyalty and longevity. Pat would not turn her program over to someone just for those reasons.

Written on Informal talks between Lady Vols and UConn about resuming series:

in response to CaptainPicard:

Theo, I disagree with your comment that UT could have had any coach to succeed Pat with the exception of Geno and Tara. You need to add a number of others to that list like Muffet. Also, not many coaches relish the task of replacing a legend. Naming Holly to replace Pat was a riskier decision than naming an established winning coach from a lesser know school to replace her. Wes Moore, formerly of UTC, would have been a good choice and not as risky.

I may or may not give you Muffit. I don't know what their facilities, fan and administration support are like. Hard to argue with our facilities and yet again top attendance for the NCAA. Let's say any coach under 55 who has not been at their school 20 plus years. That takes out Sylvia Hatchell and Vivian Stringer(close to retirement.
Surely, however, you do not believe Pat thought "you know, no one is going to want to coach at UT. I guess we are stuck with Holly."

Written on Informal talks between Lady Vols and UConn about resuming series:

in response to magicbyswh#221420:

No way UT tell him to stick it. Holly how do you like Geno being the measuring stick. At least Pat was the measuring stick when she was coaching. Too bad Holly you are trying to catch UCONN.

So you think that all happened inthe last 24 months? I am so sick of the whining Holly haters. Give her a freakin chance for gods sake! All of the folks who have elevated Pat to sainthood should remember Pat could have named virtually any coach in the country as her successor. A call could have been made and we could have had that coach with the exception of Geno and Tara. (If I were Tara I would stay at beautiful Stanford till I died). She chose Holly. She felt Holly was the absolute best choice to take over her life's work. So for all of you folks batching about Holly you are in essence saying you know coaching better than Pat.

The coaches just need to change that poor attitude and have them keep on playing the same ineffective offense and defense...but play it better. Yeah, attitude of all the players over the last 6 years is what has led to the decline of the program! There is little hope for the future if the coaches don't observe the most successful teams and note how their style and approaches to the game differ from that of the Lady Vols...and stop blaming the problems on the character flaws of the players.

Think you are projecting assumptions here. I didn't see anything from Holly that was blaming the players for character flaws. That was Pat in her last couple of years. Not Holly. I think Holly is looking for ways to change coaching that will give the players the confidence they need.

Theo, I'm not one of those who thinks Holly will not adjust nor improve. I hope she does. But it's been 6 years with the approach and the results remaining about the same. What makes any somewhat objective fan think the progress you speak of is anywhere near what's needed to make the Lady Vols competitive against the better teams? Unless changes are made to the approach to the game, and not just changing lineups, we'll continue to lose ground to the elite teams.

There's nothing wrong with optimism about 'next year'. It's the illogical and year after year repetitive statements that departing players were the problem and recruits will be the solution that I challenge. We had all five starters back this year and the #1 recruit. We didn't do any better than the year before, and we didn't lose due to bad luck.

I hear where you are coming from. It has been frustrating. I still think I saw glimpses this year of Lady Vol basketball that I haven't seen in years. I honestly believe we have the talent, the coaching and the fan support to get it done. Confidence is needed, the question is chicken and egg. I do hope one of the kids either has this or develops a little swagger - let me take the last shot. MS, who I love, I could never figure out. A shooter who kept shooting, thus appearing to be confident, but who in big games appeared to be wound one half turn too tight. I don't care if it is a rising senior or one of the incoming kids but someone has to take that leadership position. I think that will be contagious.

If he has a good year or two and a Big 10 team offers he will probably go. Would you want your family exposed to the rancor that his has gone through? We look like idiots and got called out on it on national tv. Lets just let the man go back to work and enjoy watching the progress.

Written on No quick fixes for Lady Vols next year:

I think we unfairly assume that Holly will be the same coach tomorrow as she is today. I actually think she has done a good job and believe the team improved significantly through out the season and was actually a better team than the prior year, NCAA results aside.
Holly did not get where she is without looking for ways to improve. She, after all, was a star athlete for UT, national Assistant etc. so she knows how to breakdown performances, set goals and work to achieve them. Pat obviously felt she was up to the job.
Some on here are criticizing the "next year" talk but that is part of the fun of being a fan. Talking about the new recruits, what returning players should do to get better, new strategies that we would employ if we were coach for a day. I don't think this is pollyanish it all. It is just part of being a fan and we would be participating in it regardless of when the season ended.
One last thing, The Tennessean has a big article and picture about A. Middleton winning at the McD jam. I can't believe this paper has nothing.

Nice analysis. I am going to add that I think at least one of the incoming group adds a lot more than depth.

I am sure since we are in her final four, that she watches the games as we do, and will make her decision based on what she sees.

She, Aja, tweeted she was watching the Lady Vols earlier in the tournament. I really do think it is about the right fit with relationships, position availability etc. Stewart for UConn is playing the position Aja wants. LV Staff needs to emphasize that.

I may not have been specific enough. It is a discussion string on the ESPN web site. There is an article regarding Aja in the dunk contest and then individuals are able to discuss the article. It was in this discussion where a poster was talking about the UT cry baby minority. So it was on the ESPN website but not reported by ESPN. Long explanation but thought we needed it.
