Remember in Christmas Vacation when Chevy Chase was in the attic looking at old family pictures and crying? That's what I feel like as I thumb through my commemorative edition of Sports Illustrated from the 1998 National Championship...the front cover reads "Perfect 13-0").

Will we ever get there again in our lifetimes????

In 98 I had no money, but I did what it took to get out to Tempe to see the Vols in a national championship game, because I knew I might not get a chance to see another one in my lifetime. It's starting to look like I was right.

In my humble and rarely posted opinion I still feel like we are improving. It also feels like we can't get a break. It absolutely SUCKS that we can't get a win over a quality team but instead of Bit***** about it I am looking for positives. All of you so called fans out there calling for Dooley's head already have no idea what the he** you are talking about. IF you are going to root for the big orange, do it when we aren't in the top 25-50-100 in the country. Not just when we are flying high! Most of you people on here dumb as He**! You shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion and should move to Alabama. But there are some that are True Tn fans and will root for UT NO MATTER WHAT! If you want to Bit** and Moan go somewhere else! Last I checked this is a UT site not a place for Shi**y fans to whine!

Agree. The majority of posters here are "sidewalk fans" who never attended a class at UT, and certainly don't have any sense. It's called rebuilding. That takes time. Makes me sad to think of the kind of kids you are probably raising...no patience, what have you done for me lately, requiring instant gratification, etc.

Written on Justin Worley's second chance better than debut :

in response to ACWLY:

For a freshman Justin Worley played an outstanding game, the only thing that held him back was the coaching staff... We should hire JOHN CHAVIS to come clean house and get our guys the coaches they deserve as the current Staff is Pathetic!

You are beyond looney and probably one of the yokels that was calling him "Third and Chavis" when he was here.

Written on Tennessee-South Carolina Report Card :

in response to AlpharettaVol:

Stop me if you've heard this before: our runners are hit and dropped in their tracks. Their runners ALWAYS fall forward for 2-3 more yards when they are hit. Over the course of the game this makes a huge difference. Poole has turned into a guy who couldn't find the hole with a search light. The only bright spot on this team is Devrin Young's KO returns. He has truly infused some spark into that phase of the game.
Yes, our LBs are making tackles. But they are doing it after 3-5 yard gains. We had absolutely no contain on the outside as evidenced by their QB killing us with the QB draw/slant.
The O line is so bad it's not even worth talking about, but you would think that by this time of the season they could wait for the snap count. Where are they in such a rush to go? Certainly not to make a block.
The only word I can use to describe Worley is disappointing. I was expecting more poise and certainly more accuracy.

More poise? Are you kidding? The kid was playing HS ball last year. When I was a freshman sitting in the stands I couldn't find my way to the bathroom I was so keyed up. I can't imagine trying to run the team at that age just out of HS. He did his best, but he's definitely got some growing up and development to do. No surprise here.

Clearly you have never played real football, and against the number 2 team in the country for that matter. When you have played lights out for the first half, way above your talent level like the Vols did, a 15 minute break doesn't do it. How about this, DaveVol...why don't you go out and run FULL SPEED for 30 minutes and stay even with the most in shape person you can find and see if 15 minutes will work for you when you try to do it again. Oh, that's right....you wouldn't know exercise if it hit you in the face you flabby farce.

Written on Tennessee gets 'pounded': LSU 38, Tennessee 7:

in response to HtownVol:

How many times can James Stone screw up before another player is given a chance?

Why does Zach Rogers play over Arnett and Dallas?

Why are the players commiting stupid personal fouls after plays?

Why does UT look like they never play to win in the 2nd half?

Why do they look to be pumped up on about just 5 plays per game vs good teams? Every other play I see a team that is expecting to get smashed on every play.

I am having a hard time supporting Dooley. I never expected to win today but I am so ashamed that my Vols look like they do not expect to even play well. I do not think Dooley has control of the team. If he did players would not dive at a player well after the play is over, the team would not hand their head after 75% of the plays and James Stone and Z Rogers would not continue to drop passes and snap the ball th imaginary QBs every game.

The issues I see have very little to do with depth. And, we have depth on the O-Line, but no one else is ever going to get a chance cuz Stone is allowed to screw up the snap 5 times each game without worry of being benched.

Simms completes 6 passes but the 2 and a half INTs were better passes to the D than any he completed.

That 4th and 8 that was never intended to go for more than 5 yards shows just how smart Simms is. Come on, at least try to get a 1st down.

Being a Vol fan is very tough right now.

Trust me, I hope Dooley turns the program around but I dont see it happening in the next 2-3 years and after that will he be here?

This was the number one team in the country you dolt. We have zero depth, our two best players are out. Furthermore, we actually ran the ball well today. You need a check up from the neck up.

That is exactly why I went to the National Championship in 1998. We hadn't had a NC in fifty years and I knew that I might never see another one in my lifetime!!!

Written on Season ticket prices rising for football:

There was an article in a local Atlanta paper entitled "The City that Ate Itself" discussing how the city is taxing and nickel and dime-ing its citizens to death, and that will be its downfall. I see a similar situation with TN Football. You can't just keep raising prices on a product that has been mediocre at best over the past few years and expect people to just keep paying - especially in a down economy. 15 years ago I would have killed for season tickets but I was broke. Now I have the means to get them but I'm not going to submit myself to price gouging. It's easier and more economical to watch from home - which is sad. I fear that TN football is killing itself from within with these price increases.

I had a similar fear that UGA would come calling for Derek soon. I think that it is unlikely that Dooley would want to live under his daddy's shadow at UGA. I live in ATL and I've talked with a number of UGA alunmni about that. You can't believe how big Vince is around here. People think Vince is a god. The prevailing thought around here is that Derek wants to be his own guy and wouldn't be interested in UGA.

-Oregon commented on how we were tired-out

Here goes...sigh. I think our 'mix' was wrong for having a team with so little depth. We were maybe strong enough, but did NOT have the endurance.

Two components to football fitness:
-technique power (linemen leverage, LB hands and legs, QB torso, and so forth)
-endurance

I don't know that this guy is irreplaceable.

I agree completely. Endurance is the key. My high school team had next to zero talent but our coach ran us so much - to the point that it was beyond human decency - that we were in superior shape and we were able to compete with and beat better teams.

I disagree that most of us have not played the game. Many are veterans of either the side or the back yard league in our local community. We played both ways and were our own position coach and often our own coordinator. I played in the Howard Johnson side yard league which was often a muddy and brutal fall battle slate of games. This is why we know as much as the UT coaching staff. We are wily veterans. Some went pro, the Inter fraternity flag football league. We played under the lights against formidable foes like the LAKERS (ex-players who were still students). So do not diss the commentary of us ex pro's.LOL. GBO..

Written on No stopping Julio Jones as Crimson Tide romps in second half :

in response to gobigorange1:

The clearest indication for me personally that all hope is virtually lost for this team: When you are at work and you check the score, seeing that Tennessee is within 3 with five minutes left in the first half, you still know you're going to lose and lose badly...

People can say this is a young team, that it's a learning process for players and coaches, that we should be patient all they want... the fact is this team is getting worse, not better, with each passing game - and the scary part is that the responsibility for that falls on a group of coaches that have shown a consistent inability to even make sure they have the right number of players on the field, to say nothing of inexplicable play calling.

I've already written off this season. I'm not crying about it, I still bleed orange, it's just a fact; and though I'm willing to give CDD and the staff through this point next year to make improvements and show legitimate progress, through the first half of this season I must say I am not impressed. I'm 50/50 on whether or not Hamilton's killed us for another three or four seasons at this point.

No offense to anyone who's still carrying the CDD banner on high, but idiocy is defined as doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result. If he doesn't know that you shouldn't run the same play a second time against a Bama D that stuffed it the first time, not sure you belong in D1, to say nothing of the SEC.

Absolutely horrible.

It's actually "insanity" that's defined as you state, not "idiocy." But I think we get your point.

I know most of us played some kind of football at one time or another in our lives. My high school team had zero talent, yet we won games and made it to the playoffs by being better conditioned than the other guys.

I know that the SEC is a completely different kettle of fish, but it seems to me that conditioning is an area that can be improved regardless of who you are, and the fact that we manage to hold teams down until the second half indicates that it's an area that could use improvement.
