Written on Rejection Sunday: Vols left out of NCAA tournament, receive No. 2 seed in NIT:

So is it safe to say if the vols miss the tournament again next year martin is done? Welcome to the hot seat.

Written on Vols lose to Alabama, will play the waiting game for NCAA tournament:

in response to GerryOP:

C'mon pal. Without his leading player, without a true PG, with a "star" who was only 18 years old, and without a true marquee player, all he did was bring home 20 wins, two All-SEC players, along with victories over Florida, Kentucky, Texas A&M, and Missouri. If that did not meet YOUR expectations YOU set YOUR expectations too high. Coach 'Zo did one great job.

Could our basketVols have done better? Certainly! Would I like them to do better? Certainly! But just like our footVols, regardless of the reality of lack of experience and quality players, all some of you can do is keep harping "Fire the Coach!" or "Bring back Pearl!" Two years from the NCAA scrapheap to 20 victories and the naysaying negaVols start whining. I suggest you send Coach 'Zo a great big "Well Done!" note.

I didn't say "fire coach" or "bring back bruce." All I said was I wasn't a believer in him and 2 NIT appearances isn't changing my mind. You can make ALL the excuses you want for him but I expect more. I feel bad for the fans who feel otherwise. Probably the same people who put their kids in the "everybody wins" little leagues.

Written on Vols lose to Alabama, will play the waiting game for NCAA tournament:

in response to volthrunthru#658770:

Martin and company did not have the team ready to play, for whatever reason. If they were getting grades for performance, coaches would get an "F" in "Half-Time..

Not ready for a TOURNAMENT game? Remember when UT payed GA in Atl, earlier? Same kind of lethargy. Season could have been put away then. Not ready.

Makes me wonder if games in which the team is near families for longer periods---who have always had strong opinions about what their player needs to do--- is getting into the heads of the players.

Or ifplayers are playing curfew games.. Not saying they are; but they looked tired, lethargic and unable to play at the level needed.

UT played poorly, but stayed close today; it is a shame coaches were unable to adjust at half-time to stop penetration by Alabama guards. Certainly they did not adjust to get Stokes free from the 2-bigs, but went to him anyway. Martin told the sideline reporter "it will be all right if we get (Stokes) the ball.
Count the # of mid-range jumpers Bama got, in addition to drives in the paint. Martin hates Zone, yet his "D" was not at all able to stop the Center/Guard scheme today, even after half-time.
In-game adjustments tough for these coaches? Since Bama had UT game-planned UT well enough to win; how come UT could not plan well enough to beat Bama. Diddling with the lineup was the plan…going to players who have been streaky. They were today.
Martin and company were outcoached today. Had Martin et al had a scheme to take away mid-range and drives down the lanes, UT would have won. These coaches believe that if Man2Man 'D" is not working, Okay...let's try Man"D" harder.

Last year UT was unable to make enough adjustments in- game down the stretch to win enough to get into the NCAA. Commentators were making the same kinds of comments then that these two were making, today, before and during the 2nd half.
Being unable to successfully adjust at halftime---which Martin & company have had trouble doing both years---is problematic late in the season. Opposing coaches now know Vols' tendencies, have talked with every opposing strategist they can find, and have developed schemes vs. UT.

Gets old each year for commentators politely second guessing UT coaches. Changes needed to be made in-game, before half-time, in the last few games of the regular season, SEC tournament and NIT last year…just like this year. Look how that ended.

Here we go again? All they had to do was take care of business today…or any of three other times in the past five weeks.

I don't care how many UT wins down the stretch, if they do not convert to NCAA success, it is not good enough to be where UT Basketball needs to be.

GO VOLS...

Agreed. High expectations coming into this season yet same results as last year (NIT). Just like this time last year when our late season run came up short, so many are giving coach a pass because we finished strong. Here's an idea, come to play when the season starts so that every game the last month of the season isn't a must win. To the VOLS credit they have found a way to salvage dead end seasons and make them interesting at the end. The bottom line, however, is last year's game against OLE MISS in the SEC tourney was a "win and you're in" game and today was a "win and you're in" sec tourney game... VOLS crumbled in both. I am not a believer in coach martin and I feel guilty for saying that because he is a good man.

Written on Mike Strange: Florida, Vols — it's another big game:

Tennessee - 109
Florida - 44

Book it

Written on All of Jordan McRae's career-high 34 points "count" in 82-72 win over LSU:

Vols beat a hot LSU team and the refs tonight. Great job.

Written on Vols find recipe for victory on the road, 58-46 :

The Vols looked like a tourny team tonight. Stokes is now playing like the beast he is. I was really impressed with his passing out of the double team. Golden seems to be getting his game back. Really nice team effort. Always a pleasure sweeping the Dores. Now lets find a way to sneak into the tourny. GO VOLS.

Written on Vols loosen up, pick up first SEC victory :

Good win. Passed the ball well. Keep it up vols.

My only complaint is that I'm not a fan of CM calling timeouts after the vols make a big shot. Kills momentum and quiets the home crowd. Yesterday CM called timeout after the vols hit a big 3 and out of the timeout the Vols immediately committed a foul and then gave up a layup. I prefer to let them play w/o stopping the mojo when it's on your side.

Written on Kentucky pulls away from Vols, 75-65:

Golden has gotten so bad it’s absolutely mind-blowing.

Stokes is a non-factor…I would take Wiltjer any day of the week.

Just when you thought Richardson couldn’t do anything more embarrassing than missing a breakaway dunk against Memphis, he attempts to shoot pressure free throws with the game on the line.

Imagine this team without McRae…yikes.

Let the moral victory / I’m not a vols fan / the sky is falling rebuttal begin.

Written on Jarnell Stokes, rest of Vols looking for balance :

Back up the truck...beep, beep, beep...TN basketball has arrived in Lexington to deliver a generous amount of bricks to the community tonight.

Written on Vols lose to Ole Miss, 92-74 in SEC opener:

in response to thevoice:

I wish somebody would do a +/- analysis on McBee.

I'll take a stab at this one...

minus - bad defender
minus - bad ball handler
minus - bad rebounder
minus - bad facial hair

*plus - good for one 3-pointer a game

*indicates 7-10 shot attempts to achieve.

Written on Vols lose to Ole Miss, 92-74 in SEC opener:

I might as well cut and paste from previous posts because nothing has changed with this team. Nobody has improved over the last two seasons with the exception of McRae. One could argue this team is getting worse each game. This is a reflection of coach Zo. Great man, bad coach. This team is very, very lost under his direction. And the recruits he’s bringing in don’t look very promising. Giving up 85 and then 92 points in back to back home games when your calling card is playing tough, physical D… Embarrassing.

Written on Vols can't overcome deficit against Memphis, 85-80 :

I like the fight the VOLS showed 2nd half. Lots of potential for this team if Richardson, McRae, and Yemi keep improving. Their play was outstanding for the most part during the 2nd half. I was disappointed in the play of the freshmen tonight, they seemed in over their head. I'm starting to wonder if Golden will ever come out of his slump and I've always wondered why Mcbee gets so much playing time. I expect Martin to make lineup and playing time adjustments. Hopefully, he can lock in a solid rotation before SEC play so we can make a run.

Written on USC shows up an hour late for bowl dinner; Trojans player cusses El Paso:

It's hard to believe that such a selfish, disrespectful, blatantly cheating man can be a head coach at any level of football. It's even harder to believe that he once was our head coach. Makes me like Butch Jones even more reading things like this.

Written on Vols learn from Martin's lessons in rout of Presbyterian:

in response to SummittsCourt:

Does the Kansas game ring a bell?

HAHAHA...my point exactly! You have to go back 3 seasons ago to find a game where he scored a whopping 6 points. The Kansas game was the Renaldo Woolridge show.

Written on Vols learn from Martin's lessons in rout of Presbyterian:

Mcbee makes a living hitting 3's against the bottom feeders of the schedule. I want to see him hit clutch shots against a quality opponent.

We really learned nothing from this game. All it did was highlight the inconsistency we have battled all season. A win is a win but I would feel much better if we showed up the 2md half and blew them out of the gym like most of the other teams on their schedule have done this year.

Written on Mike Strange: Vols get that elusive quality win :

Early Christmas gift from Wichita st. by not watching any film on us otherwise they would have played zone D all night.

All-in-all a solid victory, improvements across the board. My only concern is how badly Stokes got worked most of the game.

Written on Jones tells Vols to 'Be the best':

All the SEC snobs who don't think a good coach can come from anywhere else are flat out ignorant. I see promising years ahead with Coach Jones.

Written on John Adams: Reality reigns in UT hire :

in response to underthehill:

The question gave Jones an opportunity to explain his relationship with his players was so strong that they understood how much it meant to him to be offered the job at UT and tho they did not want to lose him..they were proud of his success..shows character in Jones and the kind of character he instills in his players..a good press conference attendee will often use this tactic to help bring up points that give the person being interviewed the opportunity to make himself look good..Adams was doing Jones a favor and Jones took advantage of the opportunity..sometimes these things are staged..I didn't think this was..If Jones handles his football coaching as well as he handled this interview..UT got lucky..

sure didnt sound that way.

Written on John Adams: Reality reigns in UT hire :

in response to 798orange:

Out of all the more relevant questions he could have asked at the press conference, Mr. Adams chose to question the reaction of his former players when he told them he was accepting the job here.

The national press has a more positive reaction to our new coach than fans and media here.

Good post...I just realized I posted something very similar below you. I cringed at his question as it was borderline rude. Also, on a side note I have been tough on Dave Hart the last few days as I felt he didn't handle the search process that well but I was actually impressed with him at the press conference. Seems like a smart, reasonable guy.

Written on John Adams: Reality reigns in UT hire :

At the presser yesterday John Adams stated something along the lines that it seemed odd his previous team clapped for him when he announced he accepted the UT job. Then he asked Jones to elaborate on that...

Not only a terrible question but also disrespectful. JA took something Jones was proud to share with us about the relationships he had with his previous players and made it out to seem odd.

How about welcoming the man to Knoxville and showing some support at your first press conference?

Written on Butch Jones introduced as new head coach:

I'm sold on the Butcher!

Written on New UT coach Butch Jones in Knoxville:

in response to chrisvol4ut:

This isn't anything on Butch Jones, but this is flat out unacceptable and Hart and Cheek deserve to be shown the door for how they have botched this hire. We were promised a coach with a winning resume with a knowledge of The SEC landscape. So we hire one of 4 guys that Dooley beat?! You are out of your minds. I will support the new coach, and I will always support our players, but I have no confidence in Hart or Cheek whatsoever. Even Auburn got a better coach and they have probation looming over their program not to mention Nick Saban in state. Unfortunately the same part of the fan base that was content to let Dooley stay as long as he did now wants everything to be all fluffy and warm, but I'm telling you all now, college football is won on recruiting not coaching and if you think this guy can beat or even be competitive against Saban, Richt, Miles, Spurrier, etc you are out of your minds. Be prepared for a repeat of the Dooley era maybe with a one or two game per year improvement, appearances in the Liberty Bowl and more getting our brains beat in by all of our top rivals. Someone should have stepped in and removed Hart from this hiring process after he botched it with Strong and Gundy, and we should have brought Fulmer back. I heard that Fulmer would have brought Chavis back and also Tee Martin. I'd rather win 4 games a year with those UT boys than deal with what now lies ahead of us. Good grief. Vandy has a better program than we do now. So glad we are competing with schools like Purdue and Colorado for a coach instead of with the schools we aim to call our rivals. We are a 2nd tier program now. The level of acceptance of this hire by such a large number of the fan base proves that.

good post...sad but the hard truth.

Written on New UT coach Butch Jones in Knoxville:

in response to calvol:

Good luck coach, you're going to need it. I don't blame you for this fiasco so I will support you and the team. Mr. Hart, please resign. You had a long time to get your man, and didn't get it done. If you didn't have somebody ready to go you shouldn't have fired Dooley and paid the huge buy out. In doing so you damaged the university. This is Dooley part deux.

I couldn't agree more. I will support coach and I hope he does a great job but wow it looks like we panicked with this hire as every other coach on the wishlist used the VOLS as a doormat to get a raise. Dave Hart gets an F- for the way he handled the Dooley firing and the coaching search. Let's hope he found a diamond in the rough but my fear is that in 3 more years we will be going through this process again. This is just my initial reaction and I'll emphasize again that I really hope I'm wrong.

Go VOLS...Welcome coach Jones!!

Written on Different day, same struggles for Vols, 46-38 :

What we saw last night was an improvement...36 points the game before, 38 points last night!! What more can you ask for?

Written on ESPN report says Charlie Strong is top candidate for Tennessee head football coach:

If Strong hires a good lawyer for his contract negotiations his buyout in 3 years could pay for retirement. I know Dooley is looking for a job...just sayin.

Written on AP source: Auburn hires Gus Malzahn as head coach:

The longer we hear nothing the more likely a Gruden announcement will shock the world.

Written on Tennessee falls to Georgetown, 37-36:

in response to GerryOP:

Thanks Chicken Little. I prefer to believe that it was one hard fought game with both teams having an off-night shooting the ball. It happens.

To shoot that bad and still have a chance to win is not all bad. G'town is never easy for anybody.

Oh, ditto your Petrino comment.

Name calling? Very mature of you.

The two quality opponents we have played this year we have shot the ball horrifically. I see this as a trend and not an off night. We make our opponents defense look as great as the opponents QB's this football season...best games of their career.

Written on Tennessee falls to Georgetown, 37-36:

It is so tough being a vols fan these days. Same old story for this team…solid defense, terrible shooting, sub-par coaching.

I’ll give coach Zo credit for bringing hustle and good defense to a program that was always about offense under Pearl. However, he cannot coach offense. If a team plays zone against us we have ZERO answers and make no adjustments. I have never seen such a bad final 4 possessions of a game as I did tonight. I know part is execution but I put more on coaching. You cannot break a zone by passing back and forth on the perimeter until the shot clock winds down and then fire up a 3-pointer. I have to cut coach some slack though because when your so-called team “shooter” is Skylar Mcbee then you don’t have much of a chance to succeed. I know coach is all about recruiting athletes but we need some real shooters if we will ever make a tourney run. Shooting under 30% from the free throw is embarrassing. And as I have said a few times on here #32 should not play until he learns to pass the ball. He shoots the ball every time he touches it and either misses or gets rejected. Someone needs to tell him this is no longer JUCO so he is no longer the best player on the court.

If you want to look at the glass half full you can say we played a top 20 team very close on their home court. On the other hand, I have a hard time overlooking the careless turnovers and terrible shooting performances we have displayed against the only 2 quality teams we have faced this year (OK ST and Georgetown). I know the season is early so I will keep my hope that we start making our free throws and learn to break a zone as the season goes on.

PS…hire Petrino and lets start winning in Neyland again.

Written on Jimbo Fisher, Bob Stoops deny UT coaching interest:

in response to AZ_Vol:

We tried the "winning is all that matters" before.

Remember?

How do these sanctions taste?

I assume you are referring to Kiffin in which case Kiffin's track record was far from "winning." Kiffin is in no way comparable to Petrino as far as on field success. Bogus argument.

Written on Jimbo Fisher, Bob Stoops deny UT coaching interest:

Petrino is the only good coach UT has a realistic shot at getting. I can't imagine anyone else leaving their current job to inherit such a mess. If I were Mr. Hart I would focus all my attention and resources on locking him up before another SEC school does. No matter his background, the guy is a winner. And at the end of the day, winning is all that matters in sports.

Written on Tough to read Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray when it comes to his NFL plans :

My prediction...

Bray, Hunter, Patterson all leave for the NFL. Bray and Hunter turn out to be busts while Patterson has a potential Hall of Fame career.

Here is my reasoning...

Bray is mentally weak. His cocky attitude will get him nowhere. All the physical tools in the world but lacking football IQ. I don't ever seem him developing those intangibles.

Hunter is tougher to predict. He could be the next AJ Green but I believe injuries, inconsistent hands, and unwillingness to go across the middle of the field to make a tough catch will ultimately seal his fate.

Patterson will immediately make an impact on special teams for an NFL team. Give him a few years to learn the playbook and he could be unstoppable. I see him as a Devin Hester but with a much bigger impact to the offense as a receiver.

I wish all three would return for their senior and I believe all three would benefit tremendously from another year of growth but in reality they have their bags packed and will be catching the 1st flight out of Knoxville following the game Saturday.

Written on Vols' offense goes on vacation against Oklahoma State, 62-45 :

Does anyone know how to set a legal screen? I hear Phil Jackson is looking...

Written on Vols' offense goes on vacation against Oklahoma State, 62-45 :

Horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE…absolute pathetic display of basketball. No offense, horrific shooters, nobody that can make a post move w/o traveling, embarrassing free throw shooting, and an overrated defense that gives up too many busted plays and routinely bails out the offense with fouls.

What scares me the most is how grossly outcoached our team was. Out motivated, out willed, out energized, NO ADJUSTMENTS, NO ANSWERS. Came out the 2nd half and fired up 3 long-range jump shots that didn’t have a chance. If this were a chess match OK ST was always 3 moves ahead of us. I have watched all 3 games this season and have seen ZERO improvement from any player from last year. I like Stokes, seems like a nice guy, but he is just a big body with no post moves and cinderblocks for feet and hands. Don’t even get me started on Golden and his careless shot selection, was there a Kenny Hall sighting today (oh wait I think I saw him tackle someone out of frustration and get called for the foul), and who is #32 and why is he on the court?

With such pathetic and inconsistent shooters, I hate to say this team is incapable of making a run in a tournament. There will be a few highs this season and many lows.

Lucky for me, I’ve gotten used to mediocrity as a VOLS fan so I’ll be over this loss in 5 min.

Written on Tennessee football program spent $149,090 on summer trip to Milligan College :

Money well spent...

$2800 on laundry?? C'mon man

Written on Vols start with win in Puerto Rico, 75-68 :

Lots of positives to build upon but all-in-all a classic example of playing down to the competition. I anticipate more energy tomorrow and better execution of the half court offense. Keep up the physicality.

UT 84
OK ST 78

Go VOLS

Written on Vanderbilt appears in Music City Bowl lead:

Not good for the city of Nashville if Vanderbilt plays in a hometown bowl. Lots of empty hotel rooms and bars.

My prediction...VOLS win out and get selected over Vandy and once again take over Nashville on New Years. I would love some revenge on UNC from the 2010 Music City Bowl which in my opinion was the most entertaining bowl game of the year even though the VOLS fell short.

Go VOLS - put a pounding on Vandy this weekend and all their coaches with "hot" wives.

Written on Tennessee QB Tyler Bray uninterested in recent hot streak, NFL talk :

My advice to Bray would be to return his senior year and announce this decision publicly ASAP. Bray would instantly gain credibility and the respect of most VOL fans but more importantly this would help lure in a big name head coach. Bray's NFL future would benefit tremendously from one more year of reading defenses, managing a game and the media, as well as improving his skill-set. Not to mention the accomplishment of earning his degree and 1 more year of maturity. Sounds like a win-win situation for everyone. Who knows, maybe that announcement could be the momentum we would need to win out this year, have Bray Hunter and Patterson all return next year, and for the love of God hire someone who can coach and recruit defensive players.
