first and foremost ..duke has always been known for being only a basketball school, so thats one edge there , tenn was considered more of a football school, until recent history changed our course, now we're jus trying regain our due diligence on the field, until we can see growth again, while also trying to be better in a sport that we've had a player here or there come thru to bring optimism for a basketball season, but weve never been known for basketball, so stop bellyaching and jus hope for the best for both if you stand behind your orange

Thank you for the vaccuum euphemism.

Notre Dame also played 3-4 and Cincinnati swirched to 3-4 under Kelly and switched back to 4-3 in Jones first year.

Even Sunseri's 3-4 looked pretty good against NC State, so the problem wasn't the scheme.

the problem was the scheme because it was used with a team of players not equipped for it nor were they made ready to play it , and it got worst weekly, most kids coming from high school come from a 4-3,now with that said, ive heard on hear that the DE in a 4 -3 is bigger than the ends in a 3-4,not so, they maybe bigger than the linebacker thats out on that end but the DE WIll BE 285 AND BETTER THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME,NOT SO MUCH IN A 4-3 ESPECIALLY NOT MANY OVER 300 IN A 4-3 BUT ALOT IN THE 3-4 ,,I JUST FEEL LIKE this should help with couch and big poppa in the middle; carr on one end and another good one , i think we'll do pretty good this year with what we have on D and a motivator like jones seem to bring

Could that mean I have some inside information about a recruit or two? I don't think so. I just want to see who the Vols will have not lament who they do not get drama or not.

i never really thought of it that way but thats a good point

Written on John Adams: Don't hang your hat on recruiting decisions, they are tough on fans :

in response to volthrunthru#658770:

For Adams this is heavy hitting intellectual endeavor. His best, in my opinion, misuse of space was being the fulcrum on which Mike Hamilton fired Phillip Fulmer.

Insiders believe Hamilton used to leak to Adams, early, the police blotters when any footballer got into trouble, so Adams could gun Fulmer for Hamilton, Cheek and others who were unable to go head-to-head with Fulmer and win on merit.

Here, Adams clearly screwed up the column. He meant to suggest a means by which recruits could use simplicity to show their school choice; but Adams, as he is apt to do, blew it. He managed to write "minimum" where he needed to type "maximum."

At UT, recruiting got a boost Wednesday, when national recruit Marquez North decided to commit to Coach Jay Graham.

Notice that so far none of this new group of coaches has signed anything but mid-major level players; but the Tennessee alum hauled in a big fish.

Rather than set up a scenario in which UT people could coach football, which would let UT's family tell recruits about the homestead, Hamilton's non-UT successor Doofus Hart brought in people not yet familiar enough with Knoxville to do much more than be learning to spell "U.T."

Predictably they flit about the country, visiting. Smart recruits seeing a Cincinnati-level coach in the living room will take a wait-and-see attitude. There's a lot of difference between advertising and selling. Show and tell is not the same as stop and sell. 2-star coaches sell 2-star players. Big time winners command respect from big time recruits and high school coaches. Graham---and dozens of UT alumni---are big time winners. But of course that would be too simple for Hart, Cheek and the rest of the kingdom of doofus.

Other SEC teams have recruiting commitment rosters that this group of outsiders would kill to get, at this point in recruiting. Jones called them his 2-star-school coaching staff the "best in the USA."

They need to be, since they will be coaching a bush league recruiting initiative, unless Jay Graham and the behind-the-scenes UT alumni network can put together several more deals for which Butch & the Bush-Leaguers can take credit.

Phillip Fulmer has been kind in his low profile during the mess that followed his firing. But he made a point of saying publicly, after Jones said his Universsity-of-Cincinnati-level coaches could win the SEC with recruits from the State of Tennessee,

that UT must recruit nationally---and that Jones had never done that before.

Obviously Jay Graham has. And Graham has won in the SEC before, too.

Thanks, Jay. Hope you can survive working with bush league associates---under Doofus Hart and Clueless Cheek.

GO VOLS!

heres to the point my guy..no matter who gets them here ,let the coaches show us what they have to offer once its all said and done,if youre a true fan, your job is to back your squad regardless..for the timimg of what theyve gone thru from start to finish jumping from cincy to tenn , and u funny jokers still complain..and probably never played a down of football in your tuba playing life should either go finish blowing somewhere..or keep it really simple, and shut the h#ll up with all that wasted air

I think very highly of Doug Dickey and the job he did in his time as the UT athletic director, but he hired one football coach...Phillip Fulmer. Yeah, he didn't conduct a search like Dave Hart did, all he did after Johnny Majors was fired (which, IMO, was the right thing to do at the time) all he did was go down the hall to the offensive coordinator's office and give him his new title.

Now if you want to talk about Doug Dickey's hires for basketball...he's the guy that fired a successful, but somewhat conservative Don DeVoe and brought in Wade Houston followed by Kevin O'Neill, Jerry Green and Buzz Peterson. The fact of the matter is Dickey was 0-for when it came to hiring basketball coaches.

Butch Jones has yet to coach one game at Tennessee, but he has more wins as a head coach than Doug Dickey did when he took the job, Bill Battle did when he took the job, Phillip Fulmer did when he took the job and Kiffn and Dooley had when they took the job.

Time will tell if he's a great, good, average or bad coach in the SEC, but give the guy a chance to at least get through spring practice to see what he offenses and defenses he installs and how the players respond to him before going postal over things. I think Butch Jones is going to surprise a lot of the negative people on this site.

im with you,and yea i know pittman was cool and the line was doing its job, or was it,,they could pass block but they still werent running to well, nobody knows what this staff has to offer, nor can you go by what happened elsewhere, everybody screamed strong but strong came from the same conference he jus did ,so whos better of the two , and if you say strong please show why, they split the big east, and that made everyone scream strong, well i like my new coach, and im with him, riding or walkin,so lets jus back em or back up

Disagree completely after the first 2 paragraphs. Dooley never anticipated the switch would be a season-killer...and neither did probably 90% of the fan base. Hindsight is great, but there is no way any head coach would do what he did in hiring Sal and switching to a 3-4 AND saying the SEC didn't have UT to kick around anymore if he even remotely thought the switch would be a 2 year (minimum) project with the players on the team. This is nothing but a CYA article with a writer trying to act like he knew what was going to happen. Load of carp...gotta watch the censors.

i agree one thousand percent, now hes showing his contradictions if you jus pay close attention to what he says instead of how good he makes it sound..making loop holes ..those were his words..but as you said if you knew your defense would struggle why would you even say the kicked around theory..and their dumb coaching group sees the defense struggling and still run hurry, what a joke

Written on Mark Wiedmer: Dooley making Hart's decision much easier:

why would i want gruden .. if he was even considering, first off , can he recruit? well his name alone will help half the battle of that, and the fact that he stay in the face of almost every young football fan every week wont hurt either..and to add that he'd know from experience more defensive coor. and offensive coor. that would be suitable for such a situation than say your average college coach..that alone would start the PROCESS,LOL.but i believe its gonna take someone that wont hesitate to bench a player regardless of name sake if hes not doing his job.no one should be made to feel like its their job to loose if they jus arent getting it done.jus because they look good in practice ,first you have to realize who and what their practicing against,a misdirected defense that makes them do less work to look like theyre doing one heck of a job..thats where the coach have to know ,this isnt what i need.. and be able to see this, but he hasnt and he has to, thats why they call em coaches..they know the talent of their coordinators.they have to know whats a good call.they have to know when to call a time out..the sceme is in the hands of the coordinatoor.but if the coach ok it then it builds the system.so dooley likes chaneys sceme with sals sceme..which go horrible together.therefore theyve made a terrible system..the hurry up and wait system, the offensive runs hurry up then they have to wait after a quick three and out while we the fans sit and watch the other team easily drive the length of the field

Vol in Orlando here - For all you Gruden lovers I have 2 issues with that hire. First off Gruden was 60-57 at Tampa Bay. Keyshawn Johnson said of the 2002 Super Bowl team - "that was Tony Dungy's team - the cake was already made all Gruden did was turn on the oven". After that year Gruden made the playoffs only 2 times - losing in the first round I believe both times. Second Gruden makes about 5 million a year riding around on a bus analyzing games. He also does Hooters commercials here and Corona commercials. Both of his homes are in Florida as well so I do not see him coming. I also do not know if he can recruit and he has not coached since 2009. Go Vols!!

not that i really care if they get gruden or not but he took one of the worse raider teams and went 8-8 two seasons str8 with them and the third season 12-4 and lost to the ravens in the afc championship game before being snatched by tampa also

Written on Mark Wiedmer: Dooley making Hart's decision much easier:

in response to Big_Orange_Aide:

What could have happened if Dooley had not tried to change to a completely new scheme on defense? Last year defense was the strong part of our team and offense had all the problems; however, their roles have reversed. Dooley probably loses his job soon due to lack of wisdom; I don't think he really understood how fed up the fan base was and is. I just hope we will be able to land the "Big Name" HC; we have tons of talent on offense but some bad recruiting on defense. Recruiting is another issue that really didn't make sense with Dooley; why did he recruit so many WR's when our DB's need major upgrades?

THE LEAGUE HE CAME FROM WAS A PASS HAPPY LEAGUE.(sorry bout caps) have you not noticed the backs hes been recruiting compared to the ones around the SEC. hes been after smaller shifty backs for screens and so on..you gotta have a bruiser or three in this conference..rajon neal is our best back, and he was moved to wideout if you recall,a rb is a rb hands down,it aint always ur line, the back has to see the field, the best runnin back on our team would be cordarrell patterson, may sound funny but he runs out of the back feild like an SEC back suppose to..neal tip toes ,devrin to small ,lane keeps his head down, while patterson runs with momentum and always looking for his lane

Written on Mark Wiedmer: Dooley making Hart's decision much easier:

honestly , alot of these games could have been won on talent alone ,but the coaching of the little talent that we do have just havent pushed em hard enough to make them go that extra yard to get to where they need to be to make anything positive come out of these players..yea we lack in alot of areas ,but i still see a team that can be saved by a coach with a backbone and an understanding of what it takes to get it done in the SEC.cause if you can get it done here, you can do it anywhere else(SEC)..the house need to be swept clean of all these bootleg peewee league coaches that still dont know how to push, evaluate, nor run a football program..sal must go, chaney must go, you dont run hurry up when you have a wideout whos lost on his patterns, and a few others lost on their assignments as well, and you know the defense cant hold up already, so why would you tire them out ,theyre already confused out there..isnt tired and confused even worse? So, at this point, I am hoping that we lose to Troy or Vandy to guarantee he gets fired. There are many many coaches that are a bargain that would be better than him. I don't care who it offends. I don't care what you call me. I have been hoping he got fired every single day since the KY loss. But, now I am hoping the team implodes so badly that he MUST be fired. I do not trust Hart to make the right call if we go 7-5. And, I do not really see how we can beat Vandy and Mizzou with these coaches.

But, I will say this. We have a better chance of going 7-5 if we fire Dooley and Chaney Monday than we will if we keep them.

bray and hunter, they were the high hope guys for us..everybody screaming the defense looks better tonight..just think about it.why do they look better..its simple..not because sensuri knows ala. offense ...but they jus dont do alot of trickery..they play str8 forward football..all u have to do is stop em..we havent stopped em but merely slowed em down from being in the way at the right time so to speak..its not like we are making smash mouth tackles we jus been there at times to make a play but the first guy hasnt ,but at least he slows em enough for a few more sloppy attemps until someone gets em..and i do think hunter and bray wll be here next year or theyll end up going in late rounds and blow up later when someone finally coach em up..i luv my team but in my opinion , regardless of what happens tonight..we need a new every thang..but i still feel the offense can change suddenly but you need the coaches to make them work hard and dont let them feel like their position is secure..only then can chaney see results from the wr and rest of offense..its like since the wr coaching change, theyve gotten horrible..jus my opinion
