in response to tovolny: 43 yard average???? There is a 13-year old in Fort Blackmore, Va. that kicks the football 45 to 50 yards...and does it bare-footed. He reached 6-foot tall in March of this year. He weighs 172 pounds and is growing like a weed. He is right-footed but can kick it just about as far with his left foot. His favorite food is buttered corn with biscuits and molasses. His daddy owns a junk yard, when I was there back in April, I watched him leap over a 1959 Rambler Station Wagon. His mother said he makes straight A's in school. He told me he wanted to become an artist and paint mountain landscapes, but was also interested in being a designer of women's clothing. This kid has naturally curly, fire red hair and looks like Steve McQueen. If he decides to play football this fall, he will be a good one. I can't reveal his name, but when you ever hear it, you just know he has to play football.

My apologies for being smug. I was trying to be funny but wasn't.
Lindsey seems like a heck of a basketball player and a good kid. Hope he picks UT but wish him the best with his decision regardless.

Small time politics?
And I guess I should pre-empt your next question: Ron Mercer played for UK, where he helped win a NC. He was then a lotto pick by guess-who, his old CBB coach and new Celtics HC, GM, Prez, Grand Poobah Rick "Don't Bother Me While I'm Under The Table" Pitino. I hope I don't have to explain Pitino's nickname.
They played at Vandy. Maddux played with Ron Mercer at Goodpasture High. For an historic TN building, you sure don't know much about TN basketball.
Imagine a positive article written by John Adams. Some people say I'm a dreamer...or delusional.
So by my math, Jones will cost UT $12.25M. How's that? We pay the $1.4M Cincy buyout. Then when he doesn't win a NC by year 3, UT fans will have had enough, pay the firing buyout of $2M, and have owed him $8.95M (3x$2.95M), right?
Say it with me kids: Kirby...............................................SmartKirby.....................................SmartKirby..........................SmartKirby.................SmartKirby..........SmartKirby.....SmartKirby Smart (wasn't that easy?!)Instant headline: UT Coaching Hire Smart, Not Strong(even a dead copy editor could think of that)
Good news, Vol fans! Coach Martin is exactly who we need at UT. Happy to have your commitment to my alma mater, young Mr. Hubbs!

I thought most scalpers get their tickets from brokerages that buy at wholesale discount and not full price, or buy from those with extras.
"The regulation, which will apply starting four hours before an event until the event ends, is intended to ease traffic congestion, protect the university's ability to sell tickets and make fans feel more comfortable, according to an announcement today by UT."
Well, they got one out of three right.
I dare say that no one feels threatened or uncomfortable about scalpers, unless you get uneasy when you have to look someone in the eye and say, "No thanks!"
Traffic problems are not due to scalpers standing on street corners. It's caused by a lot of people trying to park in the same deck or lot.
So, that leaves the real reason: Wanting to control ticket costs. Bingo!
I gotta say I never appreciated peoples' criticisms of Adams as a guy who never has anything good to say about UT. How could a person who's made a pretty decent career out of writing be that biased? Why would he be out to get UT?
This article doesn't help the argument for Adams.
in response to snakeplissken: The sad part is that when Clear was caught a few weeks ago, Dooley tried to cover it up just like he did for Janzen Jackson last year. If Dooley had turned it over to the authorities a few weeks ago after the first incident, chances are Clear wouldn't have been sent the message that because he was a 5 star he could do as he wished since Dooley shows favoritism to those players. I thought I'd mention that it wasn't Dooley who made the decision today to terminate Clear. He was just the messenger.

How is something that happened on May 19th a few weeks ago? Not trying to be a jerk, just don't understand the discrepancy.
Robert Neyland, Phog Allen, Paul Bryant, Adolph Rupp, Joe Paterno, Dean Smith. These are the names with whom Pat Summitt will be compared. And a good argument could be made that she was better than all of them.
I wish her and Holly Warlick much success in their new careers. Tennessee has been fortunate to have such class acts at the top of the women's basketball program for so long. Go Vols!
I wish Coach Summitt all the best and am truly grateful for all that she has done. For several decades, Pat Summitt has been the face of UT basketball. For several decades Pat Summitt has been the face of women's basketball. No one has done it better and with more respect.
Doesn't anyone remember Bruce Pearl's perennial "interest" in some hot coaching job, only to be followed by a bump in contract pay/years?
If Bruce was as loyal to UT in doing this, how can you start bashing Martin for one report on one job?
And how can you hate a coach so much for turning a team of underachievers that don't fit his playing scheme into 2nd place regular season SEC and a win in the NIT?
Martin's done a great job in his only year here. He's as much of a class act as you can get in college sports. Everyone that's flying off the handle, demanding he leave right now after one little report needs to calm down.
And anyone still angry at Kiffin needs to get a life. It's been 2+ years! Get over it.
Anyone who has watched the team play this year knows how much Maymon's meant. It's great to have him at Tennessee and hope he can play soon. Can't wait for the game tonight; go Vols!
in response to bigdisbig: the sissy needs to man up and play thru the pain. He would never make it on the football team. I played football with bruised thighs, knees and a broken collar bone. Guys these days are coddled like little kids.

Yes, basketball and football are the exact same sports and can be directly compared. Oh wait, the two are very different?
Don't go flying off the handle then, calling someone a sissy or coddled if he can't run, make shots.
Just because you played football with a broken collarbone and bruises doesn't mean you know what's best for Maymon and the team. Leave that up to the coaches and trust them, why don't you?
As for who cares about the NIT? UT fans, that's who.

Not sure when it was that Pearl was a hired gun, coached at UT a few years, then left the school for a dream job. Last time I checked, he was committed to staying at UT before getting fired. Maybe you think he considers working for a wholesale grocery company as a dream job?
Great job UT on getting to play tourney basketball this season. Keep the loss to Ole Miss as motivation. Coach Martin is a class act and is doing great things with this team. Can't wait to watch what's next!
Way to go, Ryan and Tori!
These coaches have given most of their lives to their program, to the University of Tennessee.
They've been mentors to hundreds of student-athletes, worked long days and nights for decades, have always run a very respected program, and have led many national champions.
The coaches have earned the ability to decide what's right for the future of the program, not we as fans. This is one of the best programs in the history of college sports and you're tearing it down after one mediocre season like some impatient CEO.
I am honestly disgusted at some of the comments on this site.
in response to yabadabadoo1026: the haters will not show up after a great win but they will appear after the next loss great win------I like the Pearl personality/charisma but wasnt sold on his Xs and Os coaching. No Pearl team plays as good a D and tougher than what C. Martin has brought and likewise Martin has us working some offensive plays and schemes unlike offenses of the past of just jacking up 30+ 3s a game of streetball play. I like what we have here with this Coach Martin---- not flashy or with exhuberant personality but thats unimportant, hes getting the job done on the court and this team is getting better and playing as a unit and should finish much better than projected preseason Great win -- the usual haters will disappear for this one to not acknowlege it

Couldn't agree more. We're fortunate to have Martin at UT. He took a chance with a program that wasn't in great shape, having to replace such a popular coach in Pearl. Now it's starting to pay off. Good program, great man.
in response to VolAtUGA11: Anyone complaining about UT hiring a bunch of Bama guys doesn't know much about the SEC. Just off the top of my head: Vince Dooley, Pat Dye, Doug Dickey, Phil Fulmer.

Why on earth after reading this article did you take the time to look up this guy's license info? Did UT kill your best friend's pet goldfish? Maybe Smokey won't stop peeing on your otherwise perfect lawn? Or is it that you have nothing better to do than mistrust everything and everyone to the point of paranoia? Odd.
Get 'em, Smoke!
I'm wondering what influence the AD has/had in Dooley's asst. coach hiring. Did Hammy have anything to do with getting Wilcox? Maybe that's one of the reasons things didn't work out. And then, did Hart have a hand in getting Sunseri?
Congrats, Shawn! One of my favorite Vols. Seems like every time I remember Ward calling his name on the radio, it was for a first down. Got to be tough to stick with the plan of graduating, after all these years and all those commuter miles this semester. Many well wishes for the future!
Thanks Pig, for picking UT. Hopefully you'll have as good a time there as all of us alumnae. Can't wait to get this guy on the field next year! Go Vols!
I heard Hamilton, before leaving, asked to replace Oakland with Buffalo in the schedule. Too bad it didn't stick.

Agreed. If we were, Muschamp would have taken the job two years ago. The Meyers and Sabans of the world aren't coming to Knoxville except for maybe one Saturday of the year. And I don't want them. We can win without buying our victories but we have to be patient and not some petulant child who can't stand anything but immediate gratification.
Anybody criticizing Martin's recruiting was not watching Jerrone Maymon. This kid is legit and Martin found him. UT's recruiting is going to be fine! End of story.
Get well soon, Brent! We'll need you.
So now we're down to just throwing out warm bodies, it seems. This season can get worse (think Vandy game) but let's get behind our coaches and players to keep improving, on into next year and the next year.
in response to BigOrangeSmoker: All you martin supporters needs to realize this coach aint worth 15 cents,he aint no SEC coach...yeah he might of done good at the school he was at (a nobody school in a nobody league) but this is the SEC,he aint cut out for that.At the end of the season youns can say yeah bos was right he aint worth 15 cents

Are you talking about Martin or Bruce Pearl? All the haters were saying the same thing about Pearl when he was hired.
Oh yeah, and he won with Buzz's players. And he lost Buzz's best recruit. Sound familiar?
No, I'm not saying Martin is Pearl. I'm saying give the guy and this team a chance before you form an opinion. And even then actually have some credible info before you speak. Otherwise, it just sounds like you like to complain a lot.
If you're a UT fan, why complain so much about a coach before he's ever actually coached for the school? Or do you really think the school can only be successful if it wins everything every year, hires only coaches who have won national championships, and recruits only 5 stars? If you're not a fan, why read these articles?

Does this mean LSU SHOULD play this game like their hair is dyed (blonde)?
'97, not '98. My bad.
Anybody remember Fulmer and Jim Donnan back in '98? That was a good one!
Does any college football player have a driver's license that's not suspended?
"I’m a Volunteer." I like this kid already! Can't wait to see how the team develops over the next couple of years.

No doubt. It's almost a sport in and of itself. Let's hope this is it for UT's dealings with the NCAA COI for a looooong (5 years?) time. We got what we had coming to us. Football season can't get here fast enough!
The U, please be patient and wait your turn.
OSU, you're up!

You can have a BBQ. Just don't document it with pics or tattoos, please.
My guess is that this is really bad timing. Hard to look for an AD right before football starts and even more difficult with the NCAA ruling yet to be issued.
UT should take its time. Joan Cronan knows what she's doing and can continue at least until then.
Loving the posts from some true Vol fans! Let's get some excitement going!
Go. Big. Orange.
Give. Him. Six.
Are these season ticket prices, fees really that much different from any school in the SEC that isn't Vandy? Seems like this isn't just a UT problem but a big time college football problem.
I'm sure the NCAA COI would recommend Blackburn. Can't say he hasn't earned it.
I say smart move by Hamilton. This way he gets his big buy out. After the NCAA hearings, he would have been fired and likely received nothing. If he wasn't fired, he'd be chased by angry UT fans the rest of his time in Knoxville. Now he can buy a nice house in Acapulco, Zihuatanejo, Montego Bay, or wherever the heck he wants to retire in quiet.
I agree with dk and would add this: Pearl's lie was about a specific incident. Tressel repeatedly helped student athletes make shady money and covered up things over the course of his 20+ year career.
Pearl had a BBQ, made way too many calls and visits. Tressel helped students make thousands of bucks. Apples. Oranges (sorry for the bad pun).
Ah the dog days of summer are really upon us when an article that has nothing to do about Tennessee or any kids who have ever played a down of college football gets everyone so stirred up! Love it!
Wait a second! I can't complain about this?? Oh, man! And where are the stars? If we're going to have rankings, can't we have stars?!
Just kidding. I'm always glad to see good news for our student athletes. Let's hope it gets even better!
