For those who dont believe me heres evans own article where he proclaims Tennessee can only sign up to 29. http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2013/a...

Written on As many as 30 scholarships could be available to Vols in 2014:

Funny how evan fails to admit his mistakes that before jonathon johnson it could have been up to 31. But hey at least hes now factoring in the 2012 class and not just the 2013 class like he did in a poor article a few weeks ago.

Written on Ja'Wuan James learns to lead Vols senior lineman becomes more vocal:

in response to bUTch_please:

+1 and +1

Oh will he ever keep it up! Remember his presser after he signed this years' class? He was asked why he didn't sign all of the available scholarships and his reply was something like "We don't sign just to fill a scholarship, we sign the best fit to our needs and if it isn't there, we don't sign"

So this year he has an accurate reflection of what we need, has had time to build relationship with those he does want and is reeling them in.

Last year the class ranked a little lower based on fewer signees, this years' class has 5 extra scholarships to sign which in itself will give a bump....so..#1 ranked class in the nation is not out of reach!

Go Team #117.

Butch could theoretically sign up to 31 players if he manages to stay under the 85 scholarship limit that is.

in response to keepitreal4vols:

Why do you say 61,076 is considered generous? You say half hour before kickoff, upper deck was bare. Then you say at kickoff the lower bowl was full with clumps of fans in upper deck. Can you be any more wishy washy with your reporting???
And if your going to dispute the official crowd attendance, back it up with more than your eyeball guesstimation.

+1 these people dont particularly like reporting positive stuff or like admitting to facts which prove them wrong for that matter.

Written on With big hits looming via graduation, Tennessee on the prowl for linemen to sign in 2014:

in response to MrPid:

Voltman,

There are two limits that are in play: 25 scollies max per year but up to 30 if the previous class is under 25 you can back count 5 earlier enrollies (in the SEC you cannot have 31 signees...although I believe this is a fairly recent rule as some schools signed as many as they could knowing a few would fall off the board because of grades). The other count is 85 total schollies which I believe will be the limiting factor next year. Now of course we could pull a bama and exceed 85 in the spring and make some cutbacks before the fall semester, when the 85 takes affect. If Tiny Richardson goes pro I believe we could then sign 30.

Hmmm interesting seems Texas A&M didnt get the memo last year anyways i know all to well about the 85 scholarship limit dont get me wrong i was just saying the max we could sign is 31 and not 29 like evan said. This team has 24 seniors graduating plus tiny being a maybe early entrant. So bybthat stance they can currently only sign 24-25 but knowing attrition that can always change. Which is why i said up to 31 and not 29. Still that 30 rule shows evan doesnt know what hes talking about when he said up to 29 max

Written on With big hits looming via graduation, Tennessee on the prowl for linemen to sign in 2014:

in response to CroKev:

Man, it's hard to believe that James Stone, Corey Miller, Jacques Smith, et al. are already seniors next season! It seems like Stone was sitting at that table at his HS just yesterday announcing he was going to UT vs. Bama since we'd gotten rid of Kiffin. Also, there simply is no chance at all that "Tiny" won't go pro.

Man we really need to sign our share of the following on OL:
Blair and Mavety (both JUCO), Shofner (legacy), Bars (in-state 4/5 *), Johnson, J. Jones, Martinez, Mustipher, Nelson, Prince, Ruble, Stanley (why haven't we offered him yet?!), etc.

I'll let someone else discuss the DL.

If they sign 3-5 offensive linemen then they will be just fine we would then have the same amount of scholarship linemen as last year with just three or 4 depending on tiny staying or leaving

Written on With big hits looming via graduation, Tennessee on the prowl for linemen to sign in 2014:

Tennessee can sign up to 31 players this season evan. If you did your research for the last 2 recruiting seasons they signed 23 and 21 players. Let me explain this basic math to you. Counting the 23 from that class and adding 2 early enrollees this year towards that class then that means we essentially signed 19 for this recruiting class. Which means if we get at least 6 early enrollees we can have 31 total receuits for this upcoming class. Class dismissed.

They only signed 22 last year and can back count three of the early enrollees.

I'll do the math for you as well since you probably don't have a handle on that either.

25+3=28

They can sign up to 28 this year.

I won't charge you the 9.95/month this lesson would cost you from 24/7 sports though. Consider it my gift to you.

I am with Ironcity, I hope they only sign 23-25 unless they can land some big time JUCO's at positions of need.

Agree mostly. But with Omari Phillips signing late that actually made last years recruiting class 23. (Not 22)

Written on 5 Things to watch as Vols open practice:

in response to TheVolSnake:

My first three of five things to watch during fall practice:

1. Running game The back its self comes down to 4 players right now:

As most Vol fans know Rajion Neal averages 5 yards per carry his issue has been fumbling it appears Jay is working on this issue. Time as WR made Neal very valuable as a safety valve receiver out of the back field on 3rd downs or if Bray gets pressure. Neal has set records in the weight room. He has worked out some with the offensive line. Neal has the best combination of strength and speed of any of the backs on the roster. He has the ability to be an almost every down back.

Lane averaged 3.7 yards per carry but maybe too small at this time to be an every down back; if he gains some more weight he has the speed, and ability to break a long run at anytime. Size doesn’t affect his running it is the blocking that will wear him down over a long season. There were flashes of Lane's brilliance, though, and he had his best production in the Vols' toughest games. He caught a game-high six passes for 84 yards against Georgia; he tallied an excellent 7.2 yards per carry and an 18-yard run against LSU; At No. 8 Arkansas, Lane had a 45-yard scamper (a season-long for the Vols) and averaged 6.4 yards per carry. Lane's challenge is to be a better constant playmaker.

Davante Bourque if they keep him at running back (could become a D. Back) will be an outstanding short yardage back and with sometime be a premier tailback, he has the size speed and ability already but may grow too big to be an effective tailback. In High School averaged 10.7 yards per carry.

Young is very fast and will be returning kicks and could be used this year in the slot position and see time as the backup tailback.

2. Kicking game: Palardy, Darr and Brodus concern amongst all of them is consistency. Palardy is the most physically gifted but has issues kicking for the last two years. Entering this year is also George Bullock who made the last field goal in the Orange white game. The kickers had their off season workout plan changed this year and have been working hard on improvement. The main reason for the change was last year nagging injuries plagued the kickers all season long. Lest we forget having to call the backup kicker just prior to a game last year. This is a big area of concern and only time will tell who comes forward and becomes the kicker the Vols need.

3. 3-4: The new 3-4 system will take some time to learn but from all early indications the players have really embraced the change. We have some very gifted players and if they learn the system quickly have a chance to be outstanding this year. The frontline is going to be ironed out on the fall practice and will be a fun battle to see who becomes the D. Line starters.

Sorry to bust your bubble man really great post and all but George Bullock was never in the Orange and White game. He didnt register for classes till the first semester of summer this year.

just sayin. Throw the Bammers in and is 2-14 with a 27 ppg margin.
just sayin'

I already know about the record against them (dont remind me they got some work to do this season no doubt) Still though I wouldnt go so far as to say that Tenessee is and has been kicked around by these teams alot of these have been really good games that could have gone either way with just one good play or two being the difference maker (Im looking at you last year South Carolina)

Written on Derek Dooley to SEC: 'You're not going to have Tennessee to kick around anymore' :

in response to SevenT:

Tennessee will continue to be "kicked around" by Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, LSU, Arkansas, Missouri, Texas A & M, Auburn

And play at their bottom feeder level with Kentucky, Vandy, Miss, Miss St.

Really? Thats funny cause last I checked Tennessee has never truly been kicked around by South Carolina, Florida or Georgia the last four years. They have all been pretty good games within a couple scores one way or the other the last four years. And plus how can you say Tennessee will coninue to get kicked around by Texas A&M and Missouri when these two teams have never even played each other to my knowledge at least in my lifetime. And its going to be a few years before Tennessee even gets to play A&M so tell me how do you figure A&M will continue to kick around Tennessee? And furthermore I think your mistaken in calling Mississippi State a bottom feeder (though they should still get beat by Tennessee this year)
