The reason UT struggled was largely the result of the losses at db, wr, and d line. This coupled with the interference no-calls, absence of Coker, special team breakdowns, and preposterous poor tackling was indeed the perfect storm. Anyone wonder why Ainge didn't go deep to pull the Cal safties back? Sore finger or lack of a deep threat receiver?--from TV I can rarely see the def coverage.

I suspect Cal will be about like South Carolina--a tough, determined opponent, well coached and highly motivated--perhaps without the caliber of athletes UT has. Our line play will be huge.

The top 16 teams could play picked by BCS or similar power ratings. The existing bowls could be used in the play-offs with dollar bids determining what round teams you got. It would be rare that a 17th ranked team could be considered a play-off contender. The smaller bowls would do great--just think the Holiday bowl could be a USC-Boise 1st rounder or the Peach Bowl could host a UF-Va Tech initial game. The left over small bowls could be a kind of NIT for D1 or be used for the small college play-offs. If 20 teams would be needed give the top 4 teams a bye. Cut the season to 11 games finishing about Dec 7th take a week off and be finished by Jan 15th. 8 teams play 12 games, 4 teams play 13, 2 play 14 and 2 play 15. The fan interest and TV revenue would be mind boggling. Now quite a number of teams would be playing `13 or 14 games--anyone like this method?

This team is kinda hard to figure. Are they the Sr QB driven, deep RB, experienced O line power house offense or are they the thin D line, poor DB, no proven WR team who loses to UF, AL, Cal, UGA, USC, and is upset by a red hot, well coached Ky passing offense? It is easy to see how such disparate preseason evaluations can be seen. I hope they are special in a good way.

If UT can run block and cover the deep ball we win big.

Spurrier had a lot of talent and a tremendous defensive coach at UF. If Tenn had 150 sec quality recruits in the state yearly the Vols would have similar success.

With the exception of QB and possibly punter I thought Cal had better athletes at every position--better specimens, more enthusiasm, and better execution. We'll get better but, with the vicissitudes of recruiting, years like '88 and '05 (and '07?) are not uncommon just unwelcome. I wish UT had the recruiting base of TX, CA, FL, PA, OH, or the national draw of ND or, dare I say it, Appalachian State.
