Keep believing that. Pat is way to classy to come out and admit that she was kicked to the curb. Granted, maybe she couldn't do the job anymore but she built enough equity to make that decision though.

Written on Pat Summitt's 1-year contract dips from $354,375 to $85,000 :

Pat opened up doors for young women to get an education that would never had been afforded to them 30 years ago. I find it sad that she was dumped by Hart. 38 years on the job and just dumped. It's obvious she is being phased out for the fact that her income is going form $354K to $85K this year.

Written on Alabama hires Bill Battle as athletic director:

The big problem with UT football wasn't entirely Battle's fault. Majors said when he took the job that the locker rooms were the same when he left them in '56 when he played. Granted, they made some expansions to Neyland but didn't really make a lot of improvements.

Battle was a bit over his head at UT (hell, he was 28 when he took the job). He won with Dickey's players the first couple of years but couldn't sustain it. Woodruff didn't do him any favors by not making improvements to the facilities. The combination of Majors and Dickey saved UT football. Phillip had a turn key program thanks to the work of Dickey and Majors. It takes more than one guy to build and sustain a program.

Written on Cuonzo Martin baffled by Vols' NCAA tournament snub:

The SEC was woeful this year and it pains me to admit that. You have teams like Ole Miss that feasted on a 281st ranked non conference schedule. They won 26 games and barely got in due to winning the tourney. UT played a decent non conference schedule but you got win the games you are supposed to win and they didn't. I hate it but I'm not surprised.

Written on Cuonzo Martin baffled by Vols' NCAA tournament snub:

why did you not politely decline the NIT??

a quiet, firm rebuke to the Selection Committee process.

as it is now, it simply looks as though the SEC agrees with the Selection committee as it meekly accepts the NIT bids.

Go and get the experience in the NIT. Fact of the matter is UT did not take care of business. They got beat 2 times by a woeful UGA team and got swept by a subpar Ole Miss team. Even a Georgetown win could have helped the cause.

Written on First road win of season a giant learning experience for Jarnell Stokes, rest of Vols at South Carolina :

It was good to get a road win but at the expense of a woeful basketball team in South Carolina. We had them by 3 or 4 inches in the post and should have beat this bunch by 15. This season is pretty much a wash with no point guard to speak of and poor perimeter shooting. Get Hubbs in here and some how get a point guard. An NIT bid will be quite an accomplishment for this bunch.

Enough of this stupid Trooper Taylor talk..The man is an idiot and has launched an investigation by the NCAA. CBJ will steer clear of any character issue coach's like that charlatan.

I agree. No No No to Trooper. The way he left UT to OK ST was a joke, he was "promoted" to co offensive coordinator but was not the play caller. He was given the "promotion" to keep from having to pay the buyout for leaving UT for a lateral move. He is a recruiter only and far as a position coach, They're dozens of other guys can can do a better job of coaching. We don't need the NCAA on our rears anymore than they already are. Trooper has a target on his back right now. No thanks.

Written on Butch Jones promises 'best staff in the country' :

Also bring in Trooper Taylor - a known recruiter in the south. Auburn let him go today.

I don't think I want anyone from Auburn with the cloud of NCAA sanctions surrounding them. I loved Troop when he was here but I don't think we need to go that route again. I wish him well nonetheless. Graham is already in place for the RB position and if we get Tee at WR then there would be no room for Troop anyway.

Written on Vince Dooley 'knew' his son's firing was going to happen :

Even though Dooley was over his head at UT, I can appreciate as a father, hurting for your kids. DD was not a bad guy but just couldn't get it done at UT. He'll have $5 million to make a fresh start somewhere. It didn't work out but no need to beat a dead horse here.

Written on An early look at candidates to replace Derek Dooley as Vols' coach:

in response to 10seVol85_Part_Deux:

One big reason for turndowns last time around was the state of the program. The roster was looking terrible and the rest of the conference was looking strong. It was going to be a tough row to hoe, and a lot of people aren't going to want to go into a job like that, where the odds were so stacked against them. Nobody was going to come in when Dooley did and do any better the first two years. Year three was killed by the defensive change. There was too much risk in the job back then, that it would only hurt a coach's future.

Now, the roster is very strong, and there are a ton of returning multi-year starters. That, and everybody can see just how close they were to beating several strong teams this year. It's a much better proposition.

The reason for the turn downs was the fact it was the middle of January when Kiffin bolted. No one and I mean no one in their right minds would bail on a team 2 weeks before National Signing day.I'm amazed at short term memories folks have?

There will be a list of candidates lined up for this job. The tradition and the facilities will make this job attractive.

Written on An early look at candidates to replace Derek Dooley as Vols' coach:

in response to springcreekvol:

What's wrong with Petrino? Don't yall like winners?

We don't like scumbags. He was ready to stab Tommy Tupperware in the back interviewing for a job that wasn't even open. He left Louisville for the Falcons without even saying bye and then cut and run on the Falcons with 3 games left in the season. I haven't even mentioned what kind of weasel husband he is. He has no honor or integrity. He knows offense but his defenses were horrible, I guess he put all of energy in recruiting offense.

Written on Halftime: Vanderbilt 13, Tennessee 10 :

in response to Volunista:

Dooley didn't destroy this program, the UT administration did. It's astounding to see how the powers-that-be at UT sat back and allowed the absolute demolition of a once-proud tradition of excellence. Dooley has to go for sure, but who is responsible for this five-year long debacle? It isn't Dooley. I'm starting to wonder if the administration has the sense or the desire to change this new status quo. I have no faith they have either.

Dooley didn't destroy this program. I have to agree with you, Dooley was way over his head day one. I lay this one squarely on Hamilton and Cheek. They wanted to make a big splash and get Kiffin and look where it got us.

Written on UT has 'Nothing to report' on coach Derek Dooley's job status :

Lovie is not leaving the Bears. They are in line to win the North this year. Not going to happen. Gruden: Not going to happen. They will go cheap again like every AD has ever done. Dooley is the football equivalent of Wade Houston.

Written on Mark Wiedmer: Dooley's guts should have shown earlier:

in response to FWBVol:

David, I have to respectfully disagree with you about the timing of what seems to be an inevitable firing of Derek Dooley. I believe there are merits to firing him now because I think it puts an end to the fiasco and questions surrounding the program. It can also start to unite the fan base again, and maybe put a few more fans in the stands for the Kentucky game.

Saturday's game in Nashville will probably be the first time in more than 50 years that Vanderbilt actually has more home fans at the game than Tennessee has visiting fans.

At this point, I believe the turmoil surrounding the program is probably worse on the players than any firing will be. Do it and get it over with so the players can focus on the rest of the season rather than worrying about the next game might be the last before the announcement.

I just wonder how much the speculation surrounding Dooley has affected the play of the team the last two or three games. Sometimes kids are so worried about the next mistake costing the coach his job they don't play relaxed and up to their potential.

If Dooley is fired now UT can get in the mix for the hot names out there and start talking those that represent those coaches.

I have supported Derek Dooley throughout and I will continue to support him as long as he is the head coach, but yesterday I joined the group that has seen enough and I think it's time for a change.

I have to agree with you on that. We need to get in on some hot names out there ASAP. I'm perfectly okay with Dooley coaching out the season but make the announcement already where the healing process can begin for this program. Sal and Dave Clawson have a lot in common. Both got their HC fired. If the defense was just mediocre then we are at least 7-3 at this point.

Written on Mark Wiedmer: Dooley's guts should have shown earlier:

in response to VOLFORLIFE:

I posted on facebook as I left the stadium yesterday that if a coach could be fired for stupidity, Derek Dooley should be fired before nightfall.

I've tried to support Dooley for the third year now. I've tried to tell myself that he would bring the program around. But, obviously, I've been lying to myself. He's cleaned up the "character issues" well enough, and I give him credit for that. But he also has to be able to coach in the SEC, and he JUST CAN'T DO IT!!

Time for a change. I hate starting over...AGAIN! But the same ole same ole just ain't cuttin' it either.

My heart hurts for the players who give their all for Tennessee, but they deserve better. They deserve a coach (coaches) who can guide them to winning seasons. This staff isn't it.

GO VOLS!!!
JUGHEAD

I'm with you on that. I think Dooley is a decent enough fellow but it is about the wins. I don't like starting over (again) but it has to be done. We are turning into what LSU was back in the 90's as irrelevant joke in the SEC.

Exactly! No coach with a shred of credibility would take a job 2 weeks before signing day. We got Dooley. No credibility and 0-13 against ranked opponents and 4-15 in the SEC during his tenure. It's not going to cut it. We took who we could and we are paying dearly. The only coach I would keep would be Graham. Everyone else can take a hike.

It should have happened after KY. Just postponed the inevitable and wasted a year.

How crazy does a school the caliber of UT to hire a coach with a losing record? (Auburn with Chizik is another example. I know he won a championship his first year with Newton, but that was ALL Newton. Without him, he can't beat Ole Miss after having three top 10 recruiting years.)

Some have said that no one would come here. What a load of Bravo Sierra. They come for cash and you have to make the wad big enough to get a winner. The money spent on Dooley was good money chasing bad from day one. See what going cheap gets you?

On the subject at hand, no way this staff deserves anything above a D and that would be generous. They were outcoached and beaten by a team that was well coached, but with inferior talent.

I was okay with him getting this year. Unfortunately, he hasn't gotten it done. I agree with you. Throw enough cash and just about anyone will come. Sub .500 football just doesn't cut it here.

Written on Report card: Glimpses of strong play, but no consistency :

Crucial third down: Bray fires a bullet to Justin Hunter, only it was two feet behind him & totally uncatchable. Young plays well but makes a critical fumble. Moore drops a sure interception which may have been a touchdown. Darr shanks another punt. In short, the team made enough bad plays to lose. And our defense didn't show up in the first half...so now we have all the callers-in after Coach's job. Well guess what, our Coaches didn't make any of those plays. And we played a very good team on their home field.

But I'm sure no one will notice our improvements, we didn't give up the gashing runs. Tyler played injured & was still accurate most of the time. Rajon ran downhill, Devrin did well except for the one play, Cordarelle was absolutely spectactular, Ben Bartholomew was outstanding, A.J. was a beast & Jacquies was much much better. Our O'line continues to open holes, and Zach Rogers was once again very reliable and very good.

We played a tough game against a tough team! Please Vol fans keep the faith. We will WIN some significant games. I predict we upset a top ten team this season! And I really can't see Mississippi State losing too many games!

All Vols - All the Time - Vol for Life !

The only beef I have with this team is all the unforced errors. Yeah, MSU has a nice team but I think they have one of the best up and coming coaches out there. The jury is still out on Dooley. If they make a move with Dooley at the end of the season, they better have someone in the bag they know they can get. We can't afford to miss on a coach again. We've had two misses since Fulmer was fired.

I would gladly take 2-2 in the next four but if they go to Georgia and MSU and lay eggs then there will be 75,000 in Neyland for Alabama. Hart will have no choice but to pull the plug after this year. Kiffin stuck it to us when he left in mid January and all that was left was Dooley. I hoped he was going to be the answer but I don't know anymore. I can't say in the 3 years that he has been here that he out coached anyone. I just don't see it. He got out coached by Joker Freaking Phillips. That dude is on life support himself.

in response to FanNotSheep:

I understand the university's decision, because to act in any other fashion would be akin to Penn State attempting to sweep their scandal under the rug, in the process allowing behavior to continue that endangered more young boys.

What I fail to grasp is the need to include all of the explicit and sordid details in the story. Is that really necessary? Does that help a person who from all published information (and surely no details were spared) has only harmed himself and whose apparently fragile mental and emotional health could be adversely affected by printing the details?

Whether you are religious, an atheist or agnostic, the words "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" sure resonates here.

The man has lost his friend, his job and from all accounts, his way. He has not been charged with a crime, so why has he been thrown to the mob of self-righteous public opinion when doing so could result in more tragedy? I sure hope this man finds help and finds his way. I sure am glad I am not the one who will have to try to sleep tonight knowing I published sensational details that no one needed to know.

The details probably should have been left private and just kept it at that. I hope the guy gets the help he needs but I don't think he would have been able to continue as a coach at UT either. One could say this is a hint of yellow journalism on disply. Maybe even a little tabloid-esque as well. It's a sad deal and no winners emerge from outting Trembley as some sort of sex addict.
