Written on Vols lose to Ole Miss, 92-74 in SEC opener:

in response to born2ride:

Conzo Martin has one more year before he is gone. We have a new football coach and can't fire him now. Too much upheaval. Pearl is not coming back but we could get somebody good like Brad Stevens or Josh Pastner.

Josh Pastner? Stevens yes, but Pastner? You obviously know nothing about Pastner. I'm "All-Vol" stuck in Mississippi and I can tell you that the tiger high fan base rips Pastner worse than we rip Cuonzo. Josh (as he is called by players, fans and media) is in his third year and has yet to beat a top 25 ranked team. He has no big wins, no respect, but will probably be available in another year or two if we are stupid enough to offer.

Written on All-American Kelsey Robinson among 4 players transferring from Tennessee volleyball program:

Yikes, looks more like a mutiny than just the everyday transfer. Don't often see significant number of decorated players from successful programs just get up and leave. Unhappy no doubt, but why are they unhappy?

Written on Geoff Calkins: Josh Pastner good at many things for Memphis, just not coaching:

in response to Vol_Jokes:

The comedy over here. I don't think i'd be insulting coaches at the U of M if I were you. You seem to have forgotten your history. Let's see Bruce Pearl. That one says it all. Lying and cheating was his speciality. Wait there is more. We have Lane Kiffen and let's not forget Coach Dooley. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Pastner may never be a good coach or he still may but we know that Pearl and Kiffen were the worst of the worst when it came to people you could respect. Now stop making yourself look so foolish trying to insult Memphis with your recent history here of failed coaches here. P.S. I hear Kiffen may be available again. Maybe you can get him back for a second go round.

Who said anything about insulting the coaches at the U of M (University of Mississippi). The article is about the bb coach at tiger high, aka memphis state. Now there is a school of comedy!!

Written on David Climer: National media finally notice Derek Dooley's seat has caught fire:

A thrill for Climer is when he can post any negative "I told you so" on UT athletics, football in particular. In this case he's been patiently waiting for other news outlets to pick up on Dooley so he can justify his effort of fanning the fire. He will be so disappointed when we check in with 9-10 wins this fall and Dooley gets an extension! Of course he'll hide his disappointment, but Climer is a phoney (like Adams) and we all know it.

Written on Vols pull away from Chattanooga, 76-63:

Glad many of you posters liked what you saw because I didn't. For a team without even one legitimate 3 point shooter (as in Lofton, J.Smith, etc) to launch nearly 40 attempts is crazy. Against a team like Chatt we should have challenged our players to commit to our inside game. And then I read where Coach is pleased with 33% shooting..........I'm beginning to lose faith in Coach Martin.

Written on Vols hope to steal Stokes:

Yesterday a memphis radio station (WHBQ 560AM) was saying from the people they were talking to that he was leaning to the Vols but Florida wasn't giving up. With no scholly available from either ky or memphis state I got to like our chances. If Martin doesn't get him this will be a big step-back for the future.

Written on AP source: Freeze agrees to take Ole Miss job:

Not a lot of head coaching experience but he's been a winner wherever he has been a head coach and the timing is good - early enough to get involved with recruiting. Looks like a good hire.

Written on Georgia mourns the voice of the Dogs, Larry Munson:

I grew up in middle Tennesse and listened to Munson broadcast the Commodores and Nashville Vols baseball games. When he left for Georgia I remember how surprised I was by his vigor in turning against Vandy now that he had become a Dog. I was naive but learned as a young boy that your allegiance goes to whoever writes the check. Anyway, his style was unique for that time, but he wasn't near the professional or had the class of John Ward.

Written on Nehlen: West Virginia has 'a shot' at SEC:

in response to westknoxrepub:

It depends on what Missouri wants to do. If they leave the Big "12" they give up the rivalry with Kansas, which is a really nasty one, and they step into a league where they are at a serious competitive disadvantage in football. If they care more about increased revenue then they'll come to the SEC, but I don't think they were as mad at Texas as A&M was. From the SEC perspective it would be better to just find a team geographically from the East so you don't have to move Auburn and make alot of your own people very very angry, but when we expanded back in 1991 UT lost two of it's major rivals (Ole Miss, Auburn) from the regular rotation. I think Missouri will say no, I think the attractive ACC options will be leary of the $20 million buyout, I think Virginia Tech brings nothing to the table, and thus you'll wind up with West Virginia and a solid portion of the Pittsburgh TV market.

Isn't it WVU that doesn't have a airport? I may be mistaken but I was once told that you have to fly in to Pittsburg and then drive to Morgantown. Also I don't like the fact that they have a mascot dressed like ours! The Eastern Division ain't got room for two schools with identical mascots!!

Written on Georgia's Richt, Mississippi's Nutt both need win:

Both coaches on the hot seat with Nutt's probably the warmest. The embarassing loss to Vandy has most likely doomed Nutt and losses will really pile up as we get into more conference play (wish the Vols had 'em again). I think it may be the curse of the "Rebel Black Bear". Bring back the Colonel - we couldn't be doing any worse.

Written on UT talking with ACC schools for basketball series:

I'm sure others on here have wondered why ACC schools now? Where were they during the last several years when we were a ranked team?? Now that we are weaker team....... oh yeah, now I see why.

Written on LSU QB Jordan Jefferson, teammate released on bond, both suspended:

49 pairs of shoes sounds like a "smoking gun". That by itself is some money (especially for a college student) but I wonder what else this student/athlete has that is a little out of the ordinary. Maybe not a deal as good as what Terrel Pryor had but not that bad either.

Written on Running back I'Tavius Mathers picks Ole Miss:

in response to LiveFaith:

**I'Tavius Mathers had to go to the place that felt most like home. For him, that was Ole Miss.**

What kind of dilapidated house does this kid live in?

I kid and wish him the best til he faces us!

If you are implying that the Ole Miss campus is somekind of dilapidated house then you don't know what you are talking about - Ole Miss is one of the most attractive campuses in the conference. I love the Vols but we have one of the ugliest campuses in the SEC (the mountains ain't ours). Besides there are very few TN kids worth crying over and we are in good shape anyway at rb. GO VOLS

Written on Nutt: Mississippi freshmen have to step up:

The Rebels have a ways to go and they apparently have a good group of freshmen, but the Western Division is a beast and improvement will be slow to show. I saw Brassell play in h.s and I think he is the real deal. But bottom line is the Rebs will struggle this year and Nutt will probably be gone. Oxford is a tough gig.

Written on Marlon Walls learning another position with an open mind :

I watched Walls in h.s. and he was the best athlete, the fastest player, and played all over the field (and playing against the toughest competition) and I thought he would make a great linebacker. I was amazed he ended up at DT. But I think DE is better suited for him and barring injury I think he will flourish and become a great player for the Orange. GO MARLON AND GO VOLS!

Written on Brian Kimbrow says James Franklin 'like a father figure':

in response to rockytop#413695:

Hmmm... didn't know you could get into Vandy with a 2.8 GPA and an 18 on the ACT. He might want to concentrate on improving those numbers instead of improving his football skills. Guess we shouldn't expect too much intelligence. I mean he did choose Vandy, right!

Probably a big misconception about Vandy's academic entrance requirements when it comes to athletes. Vandy is a private school and therefore can impose whatever entrance standards they wish on athletes (and don't have to make it public) as long as it at least the NCAA minimium requirement. It is a fact that Vandy has discussed and considered easing entrance requirements in the past for athletes but being private they don't have to publicly disclose the outcome. With that said, even if Vandy has in some cases eased requirements they probably still have higher requirements than anyone else in the SEC.

Written on Bruce Pearl on Mike Hamilton's resignation:

One of Hammys missteps was how sloppy he handled the firing of BP, but BP certainly handled Hammy with class. I think we will miss BP, but not Hammy.

Written on Tobias Harris 'sad, but also excited' about decision to leave Tennessee basketball:

in response to LJS1984:

I just hope that Tobias and Scotty enjoy learning. Learning things overseas (languages, culture, being away from family, etc.) are much tougher than Chemistry or Biology. Maybe they will realize this before they make a deal with the devil? Look at all the big time players that come out of college and never make it to the NBA. Tennessee has had a few in Wayne Chism, Chris Lofton, Tony Harris, Vincent Yarbrough, etc. I'm not sure that Scotty or Tobias are on even on those guys level yet? Good luck guys.

I agree with you. I'm no expert either but we all know Scotty's game is too inconsistent. I read where Tobias is undoubtedly NBA ready now, but I don't see it. He excelled this year with more blue collar work than pure NBA talent. If either player can make the NBA I think it will be short lived. That said, good luck to both and make they make millions.

Written on John Calipari considering coaching Dominican Republic:

in response to UkJarhead:

I agree in wondering why this was posted on a UT website, but MAN the jealousy runs wide and deep. I hope you VOLS get a program to be proud of soon. Maybe after all the major violations are disposed of, the suspensions are served, the loss of scholarships are incurred, the post season bans pass by, if you can even make the post season.....Maybe then you will have a program to be proud of and you won't have to throw mud at a guy that has NEVER been found of, or even accused of wrongdoing.....You do have that 25 game winning streak, and don't get me wrong, that hurts. It hurts bad. So that's a good one. Shew, when that finally goes away.....

Never accused of wrong doing? Ask memphis fans what wrong doings he left them with (vacate 38 wins and a final four finish). Ask UMass fans what wrong doings he left them with (vacate final four finish). Calapari is a pimp for the one & done - pass 6 hours in your first semester and attend class in your second semester and you'll play a whole season and the NCAA tournament. Bobby Knight pegged him for what he is and so did John Chaney.

Written on Aaron Douglas listed as second team for Alabama:

in response to Hrockytop:

He maybe trying to get his life back together but there are 100 others schools he could have transfered to but chose our biggest longest rival. Heck he could have went to SoCal and I would cheer for him but Bama? Really? He made it personal not us.

Well said. He turned on family, friends and fans and heard the reaction so this is his payback, and what better choice than our biggest rival. He may find some satisfaction as a second teamer (but sabin will start him against us), but we are better off without him.

Written on Joe Biddle: Tough upbringing helped mold new UT coach:

in response to born2ride:

Biddle and Climer of the Tennessean are praising Martin now. But just wait for a few lossess next season and see how fast they turn on him.

They are NOT friends of the program!

Amen to that. Those two are no friends of Tennessee athletics.

Written on Players say Cuonzo Martin is 'going to keep it real':

Considering what TN & Pearl has accomplished I'm a little surprised that we settled on this hire. Hopefully he'll turn out to be a great pick, but a little surprised too about the apparent lack of interest in playing overseas. Maybe a little short-handed but I would think the practice/games would only be positive for a new coach evaluating his team early.

Written on Auburn: Oak trees poisoned at Toomer's Corner:

If you have ever listened to Finebaum and his fans (callers) then something like this is hardly a surprise. Finebaum stirs it up like no other radio talk show host. Arrogant and vain, no class, and probably most of his listeners privately believe this was a great idea.

Written on Ben Martin injures other Achilles: 'Thanks for the support':

I like Ben and hope the best for him, but he probably is toast. I tore my achilles and the fear of tearing it again shook my confidence and I never was the same. I can't imagine doing it again to my other heel. Good luck to Ben.

Written on NCAA rules Ole Miss QB Masoli eligible, can play immediately:

in response to HarryHood:

Rules were, in fact, made to be broken. Geoff Calkins of the Commercial Appeal will likely have an interesting column about this tomorrow.

Maybe so, but it cost him his senior year at his university and had to leave home to play again. Ole Miss had a need and offered him another chance. Another chance isn't so bad. Actually I'm more impressed that anyone would read anything from that garbage memphis paper.

Written on Former UT QB Tony Robinson's son to play on father's turf :

I remember T-Rob and his Auburn performance. He was incredible. One of my top 5 games I ever watched (never saw so many balloons). He was a great talent that couldn't or wouldn't handle adversity in the right way. I'm sorry to hear that his life is apparently still in disarray.

Written on After hat flap, Arkansas radio station hires former player:

Written on Adams: Masoli situation bad for SEC image :

Lighten up all you goodie-two-shoes! Man, we've all done some stupid things but in most cases we got away with it. Some of you mamby, pamby types are acting like he was just released from prison. He's on a short leash so let it go! Besides, it's Ole Miss we're talking about, not TN.

Written on Haynesworth fails conditioning test again:

in response to AF1A4:

(This comment was removed by the site staff.)

We may be TN fans, but you aren't my pal. You come off as one of these mamby, pamby, cry babies. Your research says Albert isn't suppose to pass this required physical testing? Well, why did everyone else pass? And maybe Shanahan's testing is designed more for motivational purposes - we should all have goals to reach in whatever work we are in. But saying Shanahan wont't win because he's being mean by running out of shape players to meet minimum required drills, are you for real? What is the NFL Players Union saying about this mean coach, Shanahan? You qualify for 2 boxes of tissues, heavily scented variety. And I'm not a Redskin fan, I'm a Colt fan (and my favorite player, #18, is the total complete opposite of the player you are defending).

Written on Haynesworth fails conditioning test again:

in response to Kevinyaheard:

He has lost almost 15lbs this year and is in the best shape of his life. The test is RIGGED. There is NOT A SET STANDARD TO PASS, no matter what they say. Even if he does the 2 70 second shuttles with 3 1/2 min of rest between. Shanahan could say he "didn't run it right". It is up to the head coach. If you would actually do research you would find that other players have made comments that have supported this. It doesn't matter how fast he runs the test, Shanahan is trying to make an example of Albert for holding out and being selfish. He is by far the most "in shape" D-Lineman on the WHOLE TEAM. On these standards, a D-Back couldn't pass the test smart guy!

http://nfl-facts-and-rumors.blogs.cbs...

No doubt Albert is in Shanahan's dog house and he should be. Except for a few years during his h.s., college, and pro experiences, Albert for the most part has been a malcontent and showed it again during this off-season. So maybe Shanahan is being a little tough on Albert. So what? He needs it! The Redskins have paid him an extraodinary amount of money and the least Albert can do is be in proper physical shape for the Redskins. As for your interpretation of the unfair treatment that Shanahan is giving Albert, I don't buy it. The NFL would be all over unfair treatment. I think you also qualify for a box of tissues - the patterned variety (flowers perhaps), extra strong but VERY sensitive to touch.

Written on Haynesworth fails conditioning test again:

in response to AF1A4:

(This comment was removed by the site staff.)

Shanahan and the Redskins are being childish? Shanahan needs to send you a box of tissues. Ever heard of individual responsibility? Albert is not being paid millions to wear a Redskin uniform, he is being paid millions to play pro football at a All Star level, which he can't do on a consistent basis unless he is in the proper physical shape. The same is required for all of the players, not just Albert. And as for your reference of sad, the only thing sad here is that you can't see Albert's necessary responsibility in all this and instead justify Albert's laziness and lack of responsibility. How did a wussy like you doing on this site?

Written on Haynesworth fails conditioning test again:

He may be rich, he may be physically talented, but every now and then he wants to remind us that in some ways he is truly a Fat Albert (and he doesn't need Bill Cosby's help - he can do it all by himself).

Written on Fulmer: Galbreath 'One of my favorites' :

A really sad time for Volunteers everywhere. No one gave his all for TN like Harry. I'm a CHS grad and tried to follow his career, and if I'm not mistaken UT was the only DIV 1 program to offer, and what a player he turned out to be. Another side-note and I could be wrong with this too, but I think Harry may had been the very first free agent NFL signing (I think it was for something like $400,000). Today he would be worth 10 times that on the field, and 10 times that as a human being. Rest in peace Harry Galbraith

Written on 'Big Kahuna' was a big deal as Vols' TE :

in response to AlpharettaVol:

I believe our Donelson Dons may have won the state championship in basketball his senior year. It's a little fuzzy over the years. If not, I'm pretty sure they were in the Final Four. The school no longer exists but I still keep up with a number of classmates and fellow students I went to school with. Many of them still live in the area.

I believe your Dons won the state in the 63-64 school year. I don't recall if Denney had already graduated or not. The Dons didn't do it pretty, but dominated teams with their strength, toughness and fundamentals. Denney played basketball liked he played football and was a monster in the paint. His teammates (starters) all made their mark in athletics.

Written on 'Big Kahuna' was a big deal as Vols' TE :

in response to AlpharettaVol:

I grew up in Donelson and my best friend lived next door to Austin. The Denneys had the only basketball hoop in the neighborhood and when he was still in junior high we used to go over to his house to play basketball and not let him play because he was a couple of years younger. Once he got to high school things changed and he ended up much bigger (and stronger) than any of us. I dated his wife Margaret in high school before they became a couple. Two first-class individuals who made a great man and wife. I'm proud that he went to UT. He always represented our school the way it should be represented.

Denney was a great Vol and even a greater Donelson Don. Back in the early to mid 60's the Dons dominated the Nashville scene with lots of great athletes and Denney was perhaps the best. Not particuarly great in anything, but very, very good in everything.

Written on Cotton leaves Ole Miss; only one QB on scholarship:

in response to nocleats:

Nutts credibility has already taken a massive hit. See Mitch Mustain/ Gus Malzone and their families.

Nutt's credibility took a hit? He's done very well at Arkansas and these two years at Ole Miss (two bowl victories). Mustain's parents tried to tell Nutt how to best use their son (rather bold don't you think?) and when that didn't work to their satisfaction he transfers to USC and got beat out by a 18 year old true freshman. Credibility? I'd say you are the one without credibility.

Written on Low expectations for the Rebels:

Ole Miss may be the toughest coaching gig in the conference but the Rebels have done well recently, winning two consecutive Cotton Bowls that they went in as underdogs. They lost a lot of good players but Nutt is a solid coach and the Rebs will go bowling again. I'm glad Snead is gone, he was incredibly inconsistent and cost the Rebs more games than he won. Dexter is a big loss. I hope the Rebs win all of 'em except when they visit K-town. Go Vols!

Written on Vols picked fifth in East by media:

With our inexperience at QB & OL we will probably struggle in all but the UTM game. Ky will win someday (I was at Neyland for their last win) and this year will be their best chance. But with that said, I wouldn't sell these coaches short. I think they'll "coach 'em up and we'll see a 6-6 season, maybe 7-5 tops.

Written on Crompton looks to NFL future:

QB's always seem to get more of the "personal attacks" - and for various reasons it was just magnified more at UT. We have a few out of control fans (death threats?), but I think most major college football programs have some nuts. I agree the criticism was pretty bad - not only was there references from our local media that Crompton didn't have it but I remember watching national media sports programs suggesting same and that Crompton would be replaced. That is something that Lane Kiffin should be applauded for. I think Fulmer had his mind made up that Crompton didn't have it. In fact, most of us didn't think he had it. Congratulations Jonathon, you showed us all. Now take this experience with you and make everyone proud. Go Vols!

Written on Police report: Da'Rick Rogers tried to hit man :

It's bad enough that we had this brawl and a off-duty cop was hurt, but however this finally turns out you can bet that ESPN will not give us the benefit of the doubt and be as negative and hard on UT as possible. Anything, big deal or little deal that can reflect poorly on UT is and will be magnified by ESPN. Oh sure, they'll throw us a crumb every now and then, but generally speaking I think it has been that way since we made such a stink about ESPN's support and validation of the Downtown Athletic Club's outright and in your face campaigning for a defensive player to win the Heistman and snubbing Peyton.

Written on John Fields enrolls at UT; Pearl impressed with transfer:

Looks like a good inside player. Hope he doesn't play far from the paint as BP appears to imply - we got enough perimeter players.

Written on Higdon 'lucky my whole life' :

I was there when Higdon's W.KY bb team played A.P.S.U in Clarksville and we "peayed" on them. But besides W.Ky. getting beat that night, Higon's coaching staff brillantly decided not to start their regular starting line-up (including Jim McDaniel - All American) for either all or most of the first half. The Peay was so motivated from the lack of respect and beat 'em even when the starters returned. I guess Higdon wasn't so lucky that night. Let's Go Peay!

Written on Chris Simms. brother of Matt Simms, charged with driving while on drugs:

Written on Mattingly: Stadium once 'forlorn sight' :

The stadium & field are beautiful. But as I watch from my upper deck seats and feel the vibrations caused by our enthusiastic fans, my thoughts never linger far from the stories of what lies under the sod. Over the years I've heard all kinds of stories of caves and sink holes under our stadium and field that had to be dealt with. I never put a whole of truth into it simply because I couldn't see how such a discovery could be kept quiet. I guess it just adds to the excitement.

Written on Broadcaster Bell dies at 73 :

There was no stronger voice for Tennessee athletics in Middle Tennessee than Bob Bell. He was truly was ALL VOL and will be greatly missed.

Written on Gooch grows into the center position; ready to come to Knoxville:

I was a little surprised that Gooch looked as good as he did and no previous offers. Maybe a reason for that is that he plays center and that position can be sterotyped as not being able to play multiple positions. Maybe not the perfect size and speed either for some and he did come about his weight very fast. And maybe the Butte College program doesn't get a lot of attention. In any case I think a nice pick up for so late in the year. And you never know who is going to surprise - no big programs offered Harry Galbraith and looked what he accomplished through hard work and determination (not a prediction). Give the kid a chance, you just never know. Go Vols and Go Gooch!

Written on UT men No. 4 in NCAA attendance :

in response to volboy81:

dont forget Ole Myth. They should REALLY be ashamed. They had a good team and finished LAST in the SEC! Even LSWho, with a woefully bad team outdrew them. That's pitiful.
GOOD JOB VOL FANS!!! NO ONE supports their school as well as orange-blooded Tennesseans!

Ole Miss should be ashamed? You clearly are not one of our brighter big orange fans. The Tad seats a little over 8,000. Oxford's population is just over 19,000. You do the math.....if you can.

Written on Douglas to transfer to Arizona Western:

I feel really bad for his parents. What this kid needs (he's shown he's far from being an adult)is close supervision, not freedom to do as he pleases. Lots of bad things everywhere, but bad things are magnified down near the border. This kid appears out of control and is headed to failure and hopefully not worse. Good luck.

Written on Calipari, Kentucky working on new contract:

Good time for cal to get this contract - no test takers caught yet, no reports of paying expenses for player's kin to accompany team trips yet, ncaa not sniffying around yet, all in all a good time to get this done. But I'm guessing too that he has hit the high water mark for his bb career at ky, so the timing is especially right. However, to think you can reload and continue to experience great success with one and done players every year isn't rational. Academics won't be a concern if your only gonna play just one year, but when you are recruiting "ballers" instead of student athletes your gonna eventually have ncaa problems and you just need a year or two of that and you'll see the wheels come flying off.
