Seeing as all the haters (on both sides of the Fulmer debate) have overrun this site, I thought I'd bring a little clarity to the situation:

1) I don't care if you loved Fulmer or hated him, rooting for the Vols to lose was stupid and not worthy of a true fan,
2) I don't care if you love Kiffin as the new coach or hate him, rooting for the Vols to lose is stupid and not worthy of a true fan.

It's time to get over the hating and grumbling and support the program, regardless of your outlook on coaches. As far as I'm concerned, if you can't get behind the Vols, get off the bus--you are not worthy of the title "Vols fan." Go root for Bama, Florida, or Georgia so you can drag their programs down.

The first rule of firing a coach is that you better have some idea on who the new coach should be. To be successful at UT, the coach needs the following attributes:
1) Great recruiter- We don't have enough talent in-state. This guy has to be tireless and good enough to beat Meyer in FL, Richt in GA, Saban in AL, Brown in TX, etc.
2) Great coaching- This guy better be able to match X's and O's with the best because that is who he will face every week.
3) Great with alumni- If a guy can't stay who has a .750 winning percentage, played at the U, coached at the school for almost all his adult life, and has given $1M to the U, how is someone coming in from outside going to do it?
4) Great organizational skills- Juggling the commitments that come along with the job will make it next to impossible to get everything done, especially when the coach has to travel across the country.

Most of the rocket scientists posting here are either smoking something or are suggesting people who are definitely NOT a sure bet. I don't care how good the guy at Cincinnati is, he doesn't have the kind of experience I expect when getting a job like TN's.

Unfortunately, my guess is that we will get worse, not better, with the next hire. Who has Hamilton got his eye on? This hire won't be as easy as Pearl because of expectations. The basketball team hasn't finished in the top 10 under Pearl, yet he's the second coming. I'm not knocking Pearl, just pointing out that he didn't have to do much to be seen as a savior.

How many Goff's, Donnan's, Shula's, DuBoise's, Archer's, Dinardo's, Zook's, etc. are we going to go through before we get the right coach? Bama waited 15 years to get the right coach. How long will it take us?

I hope I'm wrong. I really don't want to live through 15 years of really crappy football before we see another team that can compete. I grew up watching TN in the 70's and early 80's, so I know what it looks like when you line up year after year knowing you can't compete with Bama, Ga, Auburn, etc.

Based on what I've seen from other teams in the SEC who have chosen new coaches(Bama,GA,LSU), my guess is that we'll have a worse record over the next 6 years than the last 6 years. Again, I hope I'm wrong.

Cowboy,

I don't see an upset; however, this is a similar situation to TN in 2006. Like UT, UCLA experienced a bad year with a lot of high expectations going in last year. I'm sure many of the athletes used that as motivation to get better.

The difference here as I see it is that we've got more depth and better talent than Cal had going into 2006. Also, this team isn't projected to be all-world like Cal was so they have something to prove. Most early upsets come when the team believes their @#$% doesn't stink going into the season. Finally, I think the player's focus in the offseason has been excellent, as seen by the lack of distractions off the field.

TN wins by 10 if we don't turn the ball over and have horrendous special teams play like at Cal, FL, and AL last year.

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that two gator fans are arguing on a TN site? Keep it up, though. You guys make it interesting.

So if someone shoots me in Mississippi I guess I can't expect anyone at MS State to turn their buddies in? A fine and some missed PT makes the justice system in TN and Fulmer look like they've implemented Marshall Law.

When UT went to the spread punt formation after the FL game it helped tremendously in punt coverage. They went to a bunch-type kick-off formation which seemed to help as well. I hope they keep these aspects on special teams.

Shoot, I didn't realize this was written by Adams until I read the posts. I had vowed to boycott the idiot's stories. Oh well, I won't make that mistake again.

I'm sure the offense will mature in time, but I am worried that we will have an offensive problem this year. Changing systems is always tough and usually takes the better part of a year to get installed. It always seems like teams that change systems struggle early in the year following the change. In this case, that means UCLA, Florida, and Auburn. I hope I'm wrong.

Recruiting doesn't look great this year; however, my take is that with 29-30 on campus from last year and 2 coming back from suspensions, etc., we don't need a great class this year. We could get by on 15 and look for a big 2009 class. However, we do need to fill needs.

First, we need D-linemen and O-linemen in the worst way. It would be nice to have a quarterback that can compete in the SEC as well. It doesn't look like that will happen. It looks like we'll have a linebacker or two which is good and there may be a couple of quality D-backs as well. The kid from Toccoa (?) sounds like he's a good running back so that will help long-term.

Tragic. Hopefully all of the Vol Nation will be praying for the family.
