Coach Chavis kept spinning gold from straw, year after year after year, never leaving to be a head coach, never returning for only two years, and never leaving with the replacement assistant coaches he cleaned house to hire.
Coach Chavis deserves better.

Choosing the best currently unemployed former head coach was much easier AND QUICKER than choosing among coaches and coordinators of teams going to BCS bowls.
Saving or improving this next recruiting class is not all that important. Let's HOPE the head start pays off in assembling a staff of assistants.

It is all about the staff!
If Fulmer had not picked Clawson, the Vols would have been 8-4 or 9-3 and he would be back in 2009.
Hiring the guy BECAUSE he was out of work, instead of a head coach or coordinator of a BCS team might backfire.
IF Kiffin can hire a good staff he will do as well as Fulmer would have. He is not the Offensive master-mind nor the real deal of an Urban Meyer, but with a good enough staff he doesn't have to be.
Does he have connections to assemble a good enough staff? Can he convince a Charlie Strong or Kevin Steele to switch teams? Can he find an ofensive coordinator who can teach and develop?

It was NOT just a slow progression QB.
It was not just a QB who let go of two games handing off to Arian Foster near goal lines. Dave Clawson did not arrive with enough credibility or discipine, even if he had done well at championship division.
This team had the best Fullback and best Tight Ends in years; If they had run and only run, they would have done a Vanderbilt on Auburn and Wyoming and UCLA, and given the offensive staff a second year to get the new offense across to the players and one assistant who probably thought the old offensive plays were not so bad.

SEC Championship game:
x x x x 97, 98,x x
01 x x 04 x x 07 x
Better success last eight than first eight.
Winning SEC east 1/3 of the time isn't bad.
While it took a decade to figure out beating Spurrier, Mark Richt had been figured out, in half that time.
Choosing Dave Clawson, was a spectacular mistake.
If only Fulmer had kept Cutcliffe or even kept Randy Sanders, 2008 would have been the 3-4 loss year and 2009 & 2010 would have been better.
It takes UT level schools two or three hires to get a real one, so be patient.

2005 had a great defense too.
Imagine 2008 Volunteer defense statistics if the offense held the ball for a more than five plays for the average possession.
These guys are not the galoots of John Henderson and Albert Haynesworth but take away the Special team scores and special team field position and give them eight to ten plays to rest between possessions, and they look pretty good.
How Many of Florida's 30 points came from driving the field?
How many of Georgia's 26 points came from driving the field?
How Many of Carolina's 27 points came from driving the field?
If this offense had scored 28-33, how many games would have been lost?
If the 2008 offense had scored the points of 2007 team against the same opponents?

If we do NOT hire Charlie Strong, will someone get him hired as Head Coach somewhere.
I miss the easier to score on Spurrier Gators. Urban Meyer's Gators are odds on favorites to beat AL and anyone in NC game.
Two NC in four years???
At least hire away his defensive coordinator.

The two arguments against Berry @ QB were:
a) We need him un-injured on defense.
b) Other QBs need every practice rep they can get.
After Vanderbilt, is (even lessor need for pass defense) Kentucky, so except for career-crippling injury, risk it.
Already too late for practice reps to develop Crompton or Stevens.... each looks worse as playing time increaes.
The real reason to play Berry substantial time at QB is next year's coach probably will not.
Fulmer promised him a chance "during his career" and we all thought that meant Berry's career.
Playing time is the last reward and promise-keeping a fired coach can dole out.

One relevant Question is WHEN to fire the coaching staff.
If they were hanging on to hope of returning, would it have made a difference in preparation for Wyoming, Vanderbilt and Kentucky.
Which would be MORE distraction for the players, knowing the coaches were fired, or wondering?
Those us who have been fired, how was working for your boss after he gave you notice and you had nothing to gain by performing?
Those of us who have fired workers, how do they perform after they have the bad news and not much else to lose?

Who else would retain the guys coaching the positions that failed UT this fall, and replace the guys coaching the positions which delivered for UT this fall????
Who else would replace the 50 year old successful DC with a guy old enough to be his father? Either of their father's?
Some Team will get 10-15 years of stunning defense from Coach Chavis; how many years will UT get from the guy who is already over 65?
On Kiffin brings a new shade of orange
