This team was as unprepared as most of Fulmer's teams have been over the last few years. Ridiculous freshman mistakes from seniors and 4th-year juniors. The blocked punt was due to a blocker leaving his assignment to help two other blockers and letting three UCLA defenders through. Crompton was dreadful most of the night. Foster made yet another game-losing play and the play calling on offense was horrendous.

We had them out-talented three to one. How badly does that mean we were outcoached?

I wish this were the exception, but I've come to expect this kind of pathetic performance from a Fulmer-coached team unless we're 30 point underdogs.

This could be a 10-2 year yet, or it could be 2005 all over again - only worse.

Titan, I had forgotten about hearing Bill Anderson in the background like that. You're absolutely right.

We're all better at some things than others and John was the level best at announcing. Bob Kesling is the best at interviewing one-on-one. Bob seems like a reporter at heart, but he struggles mightily to call a football game for the reasons others have noted.

Ward brought colorful descriptions like "he twists, he turns, he dives for the FIRST DOWN!" and "he's brought down in the backfield by Al Wilson and a HOST of Volunteers"

I can hear Bill Anderson chime in with "that left tackle for the bulldogs is overmatched and I wouln't be surprised to see John Henderson beat the tailback to the handoff before this game is over."

UT seemed larger than life over the radio waves in the early years and Ward was spot-on when you listened to his colorful descriptions with the TV sound turned off in the last decade.

Hard for anyone to follow that.

I heard Jerry on the WNOX Sports Talk show last week and he talked about how smart some of his NBA teams were. I bet he talked to the players about the difference it makes to play brilliant basketball on top of talented basketball.

Between his experience with success and his spiritual faith, this guy seems like a perfect influence for any program. I'm glad he stopped by.

Good luck to Malcomb at Memphis. Everybody's different and you only have one college career.

As for Memphis players coming to UT, we've got a lot to offer, but Atlanta, Birmingham, Lexington and even Charlotte are closer than Memphis, so I understand the barrier. I'm just glad we recruit well out-of-state. It's a testament to the ability of Coach Fulmer.

I remember the announcers saying more than once, and in a near-mocking tone, "Tennessee's only chance is if...". I can't remember if they followed that with a bus crash or ptomaine poisoning, but either way they spent the whole pregame and as far into the game as they could praising Miami and Jimmy Johnson.

But then, reality set in. How Sweet It Was.

Rest in peace, John Mark. In a place with no limitations and perfect love.

Interesting column. I would guess that more schools than we think might be interested in a coach who can recruit nationally, has won a national championship and has one of the highest winning percentages in the toughest conference in the nation.

Except for the point about Meyer's team being very disappointing last year (I agree with the earlier poster about that) this was a great analysis.

I miss John Ward, too. Bob Kesling is a terrific guy, but no one could follow the best that UT will ever have.

Touchdown, Big Orange!
It's football time in Tennessee!
HE MADE IT!
BOTTOM!
SWISH!
It's GOOOOOOOOOOODUH!
He twists, he turns, he struggles, he fights, he surges forward for the FIRST DOWN!
Brought down by Reggie White and a HOST of Volunteers!
And of course....
To the five, the four, the three, the two, the one, GIVE HIM SIX! Touchdown Tennessee!

I was six in 1968, but have a lifetime full of John Ward memories. It's absolutely perfect that UT won a national championship in his final year. There will never be another.

Interesting stuff, but the format is pretty close to unreadable.

Still, the coverage of UT sports by this staff is getting better and better. I appreciate the efforts of the News Sentinel to provide better recruiting coverage and more interesting articles.

Nice article. Ole Miss and Nutt are a perfect fit and could bring the glory years back. I still can't believe Arkansas let him go.

Bobby Petrino will be the loneliest guy in America if he loses a football game this year.
