Hope he got his degree.
He'll get one year to make an honest effort to improve his approach to the game and drop the phooey about being too cool for you. If he does and shows improvement, he might have a chance at a career. If not, we can color him gone at the end of a year. I hope he can get it done.

in response to standfast#211788: Attention: Marlin LaneRegardless of what you did or did not do, and regardless of how you feel today, and regardless of how you view your situation, you are better off returning to the team. You should talk to Coach Jones and get everything out in the open and squared away. If you do not like the coaches, if you do not like the University of Tennessee, if you think you have been mistreated, or if you are embarassed by what you have or have not done, come back and talk to the coaches. Put it behind you and get back with your teammates. Work hard and do your best. Play by the rules. Shoot straight with your coaches and teammates. Then, at the end of next football season, if you just don't like it at UT, you can transfer to some other school. At least give yourself a chance to improve, play some football and earn everyone's respect. Don't go down the road of so many other athletes who have messed up and quit. You will respect yourself for working hard and everyone else will respect you. Most people make mistakes when they are young. You are no different. Get back with your teammates, work hard and things will work out for the best. I speak from experience. Best of luck to you whatever you decide.

Maybe the best post and advice I've read on this site. Good job Standfast!
I think Tyler will mature, get his head on straight and do well in the NFL. He just needs a change in scenery and good coaching which he certainly did not get with Dooley and crew.

in response to The_Power_T: No need to take shots at Phil. He did an amazing job at our university, and when his performance slipped, he was fired. I can tell you he's done more for this world than any negative troll taking jabs at him. Get a life! Show appreciation for all the great things he did, and get over the bad towards the end. Good luck Coach Fulmer, a true Vol fan wishes you the best

If Trooper Taylor were so good he already would be on Saban's staff.
Maybe he left because of $ as well as a little long range planning of his own which indicated that the Vols will not have any experienced O linemen after next year for his running backs to run behind. Maybe he didn't want to take the heat for poor RB performance.
in response to asleep#212036: Mixed feelings. On one hand, no doubt our RB's played better last year and he was the only former Vol on Butch Jones' staff, all good. However, for all his alleged recruiting prowess, we were not able to sign a big-time RB this class, even with no real proven SEC talent in the upper classes, should have been a chip-shot, not good. Bottom line is both money and his connections to Tee Martin and Randy Sanders sealed the deal, although Randy currently owns the spot he has coached at his last two schools. As far as the Dooley 2.0 comments, pure silliness. Dooley has never won anywhere he's ever coached and in fact, the subsequent La Tech coach took his players and won with them. Jones has won everywhere he's ever coached and has proven so far to be a tireless worker and recruiter. If Graham wants to head to FSU and coach in the ACC, let him go. And I cannot agree more with the VFL comments - just another Dooley sound bite (among innumerable others) designed to make us think the program was headed in the right direction - BS all the way. Unfortunately Jones has no choice but to forge on with it... Read Eric Berry's (and several other former Vols') comments on Butch Jones and then decide whether or not he is preferable to Dooley from folks in the know. Go Vols!!!

True grit.
in response to johnlg00: I get why many Vol fans are ready to rub some Bama noses in their troubles considering how much grief we have gotten from their fans when our guys have screwed up. I take it as just another example of the kinds of trouble most programs have these days. And as some of you have suggested, this often happens when you are dealing with only partially-educated and domesticated guys who have grown up with a sense of entitlement because they are star athletes. This is what people are thinking about when they say they prefer guys with good character who will do what they are supposed to do rather than going with talented but possibly troubled guys who can't be counted on off the field. That is a dilemma college programs will continue to face as long as the current "win at any cost" attitude prevails.

Good for Dooley. Now they should add his mother and we could really have a good time.
Not a big deal except as a blow to Vol pride. Let's wish him well and move on. Bring back Kippy Brown!

in response to govolsgo8586: I wonder how VOL nation would feel if he decides to pick that scumbag over his alma mater? I sure hope he comes to UT it would be a shame if he doesn't. The only thing other thing I could think of that would keep him in LA is the fact his wife is a singer however, if they don't see each other often anyway why would it matter. When they normally would be able to see each other she could fly to Knoxville during her down time.

Bingo! Plus he won't have anywhere near the pressure to win instantly as he would at UT. Signing up with UT guarantees a firing in 3 years or less plus having to read and hear all kinds of phooey from the fan base along the way.

in response to HtownVol: I want to throw a name out there. Raheem Morris. He is a DB coach in DC right now so he would likely take the promotion. He was off to a great start in Tampa before the team started slumping but that team didnt really have much to work with. I have seen interviews with Morris and he seems to be a great person. I know it wont happen but I would take Raheem Morris over most of the names I have heard.

Also the real national championship game.
Terrific story. Wish he could coach football too.
Just watched Chaney's post game presser. Strikes me as an intelligent, articulate guy with a sense of humor and humility who also has some talent. Hope he sticks around with the next regime. Kids seem to like him as well.

Go forth and multiply yourself....many times.
Hopefully, someone will interview all the players and behind the scene staff and give them absolute anonymity so that those of us who aren't sports radio hosts can get an idea of how this whole thing came off the track so badly. Want some good tabloid journalism.

in response to sksimon#207586: I do not understand how everyone wants to fire Dooley. He has not had the same staff long enough to establish any sort of regularity. The team has had to adjust to different styles over the last three years. Fire Dooley and the whole staff goes and the team starts all over again with another adjustment for the players. Wait until the end of the year and see if they get a bowl bid.

in response to pcorange: I hope we stay above board. It's kinda like an old saying, "If she'll screw around with you, she'll screw around on you." We don't need the type trash who would ditch their school after one year, unless it is at a mid-major program that expects their coaches to be cherry picked. Tennessee is better than that. By the way, John Adams needs to just shut up. Dooley hasn't been fired, and I've seen nothing substantiated to indicate that he will be. I really think Hart intends to give him another year unless he loses out.

in response to wallingdad: I have no inside info or people i know on the inside to support any of my thoughts but here it goes. I have to believe that Hart is waiting on the outcome of the last two games. if UT goes 6-6 and gets an invite to a bowl he can justify in his mind that giving Dooley one more year would be prudent. I have to believe he is staring at the buyout and cringes at it, especially given our state of financial woes. he is looking for any reason to keep Dooley. If not why is he waiting to pull the plug?

You might be correct. Last year everybody was complaining about Chaney and the offense and wanted Chaney sent packing. This year it's the defense. What will it be next year? Outlook is not good with or without current coaching staff as a lot of key players on offense could be leaving. More than anything what UT needs is stability and patience. The only constant at UT now is turmoil and that is not conducive to fielding a winning team.

Nicely characterized.
If a decision has been made by Hart or whomever Dooley should be told. Neither he nor his family deserve to be left twisting in the wind on tenter hooks. If that's what's going on and it comes out, as surely it will, it will be another reason why no qualified, self respecting and non desperate coach will want anything to do with the job or UT.
in response to movol53: Spurrier will NEVER come to UT. We did not recruit him out of high school because he did not "fit" our system. He goes to Fladuh and wins the Heisman. He hates UT with all of his being because he feels that we disrespected him many years ago.

in response to mrvol2u: Dream, dream, dream! Dooley may not be a football coach but he is a lawyer and he is smart enough to know he will not get many, if any, more shots at high paying head coaching jobs and will take and demand his 5 mill buyout. in response to 85VolMan: When UT hired CDD it was at best a long shot that he could be successful. Based on the other coaches that were available at that time and who would have actually been interested in coming into the bad situation he was probably no better or no worst than anyone else who they could have gotten.I believe CDD is a fine person and individual but has shown he is not ready for SEC prime time football coaching as a head coach.Letting him go is the right thing to do. But I see UT as being in the same predicament as it looks for another coach. Three and out is the message being sent. I know of no big name coach who would be willing to step into this situation knowing that it would probably be impossible for a new coach and new assistants to turn the program into an SEC Champion in 3 years. And this is what many of the bandwagon whiners in the area want to happen. Any new hire will take 3-5 years to get close to that. Here's a thought to stir up the comments..........Let's go after Spurrier.....who knows.....

in response to volaholic45: Human pyramid, eh? It's a crazy idea - so crazy it might just work! It should help keep the guys on the bottom from jumping offsides, and increasing the number of passes batted down will be a sign of real progress. Sure, the human pyramid defense is vulnerable on the edges and over the top, but heck - we're vulnerable on the edges and over the top now. And it will definitely get us on ESPN. No wait, nevermind. No way to get it installed in time for the next three games - it would take several years of breathtaking failure before the innovation started paying off.

The human pyramid was used by Cornell in the 60's in a game against Princeton in an effort to block Charlie Gogolak's field goal attempt. It was subsequently outlawed.
Has the trading deadline passed?
in response to Orangepuddinskin: Patterson is the only guy I would say that needs to head on out to the NFL. If Corderelle comes back next year, with Bray and Hunter, this offense will be unstoppable. Only God knows where we would be with a top 60 defense. Hunter has lost a ton of stock this year. He catches the uncatchable and drops the perfect easy catches. He needs to catch both. He was the no.1 receiver in mock drafts at the first of the year, but he keeps dropping every week.

in response to 69vol08: Please explain why Gruden would be a good idea. Has he EVER been a head coach in college? Was he a great NFL head coach? I just don't get why people act like he would be the savior of UT football. Our next coach needs to have successful head coaching experience at the college level and at least significant assistant coaching experience in the SEC. Gruden's only college coaching experience was as a grad assistant at UT in late 80s and was a fair at best NFL coach. His Super Bowl win was arguably with a team Tony Dungy built. If you listen to him on Monday Night Football he sounds like a moron. I think if we hire him we would spend millions on a disaster!
