Here is a young man who has done everything he can to get eligible and is apparently worthy of eligibility.

There are many examples of players with less than stellar high school credentials who have become outstanding students.

I gather from where Williams went to High School he likely came from both a socially and academically challenged environment. He has kept his word to UT when he certainly could have already gone to a NCAA 2A or NAIA school and been playing.

And he has done the work to get his academics in shape.

From a public relations perspective for the SEC he is a feel good story waiting to be told. A kid getting his house in order to play in the SEC.

Hang in there Gerald we appreciate you loyalty and effort.

Since when is class attendance and performance in the class itself linked?

Admittedly its been a long time since I was a student at UT but I found keeping up with with the readings, exercises and individual class schedule in many classes was far more important than actually attending the class.

When I was matriculating there was no general policy for the regular student body although some professors/instructors/departments had their own standards.

If this is still the case athletes are being held to a different standard.

I agree with simply wishing him good luck.

College is a difficult adjustment for many students and it is especially true when you are a long way from home.

Personally I'm glad Dan Williams stuck it out.

The 98 team was talented and determined but it the plays that turned that season show just how everything has to line up to win a National Championship.

There were other factors as well Ohio State as I remember lost to Minnesota to get us near the top. After that UCLA was ranked #1. Miami which had been down for a couple of years upset them the afternoon of the SEC championship game.

FSU beat Florida with Outzen at quarterback to climb to #2.

Shaun Ellis came back and played effectively after an automobile accident including limping to a TD with a turnover against Auburn. When Jamal Lewis went down Travis Henry, who had almost been dismissed the year before, teamed with Travis Stephens to play at an All Star level.

If you look at LSU last year and UF the year before they had similar experiences.

The 1990 team was more talented but did not have the key plays turn their way.

You have to be great but you also have to get or make some breaks along the way for one of those special seasons.

On 10 Plays that Shook the Season

I agree that going in defense has got to be the key for us in winning this game.

With a new QB and offensive coordinator it may take a few games for a consistent offense to develop. In the interim the defense will have to play well.

Last year things were very unsettled on the defensive line and in the secondary. The loss of Jerrod Mayo doesn't help but otherwise we should be better at every defensive position on the field in terms of experience or athletic talent.

Going into the season I believe this team can end up being of championship caliber. I'm anxious to see us play.

As for UCLA we can't control their situation so we need to worry about ourselves.

On State of emergency at UCLA?

The position is really like a 3rd guard with the main responsibility to pick off linebackers, usually the most difficult opponents to block due to their strength size and quickness.

If they can catch like an Amsler or Bryson its a real bonus because against certain defensive sets a quick starting fullback can make some effective runs.

Obviously they can be a key in pass protection as well. With the uncertain depth at tight end we will need an effective fullback this year if nothing else to keep the tight end fresh.

Remember we are listening to some "coach speak" in all of this.

First, the are putting some mental pressure on Crompton both to temper him and see how he responds.

Second, they are trying to send UCLA messages that they are not real confident in our throwing game which is probably not the case.

Third, to run the ball your line has to be confident in their assignments and have their timing down to open holes. That is what scrimmages are for to develop both those traits.

Finally, our secondary should not be just good they should be outstanding as a group this year. When the field tightens down around the 20 it should be very difficult for our opponents to complete passes. Hopefully whatever problem Crompton had in the scrimmage is at least partially related to this.

It was just a first scrimmage no team college or pro is ready to play their first game after one. And the coaches are all about picking one apart to get improvement.

On Fulmer looks to build on effort

There is something to be said for football instinct. Some guys just have a knack for finding the football and making plays.

Wilson appears to be one of those guys. At 225 pounds and 5-10 he is obviously stocky is probably skilled at getting underneath blockers and fighting them off.

As for Daryl Dickey, the Tech game was not his first start that had occured the year before when Robinson was hurt. I forget the team he played against but he completed something like 23 of 26. Even with that experience it took him the 2nd half of the Alabama game and much of the Ga Tech game to settle in and perform. His first pass against Alabama was nearly returned for a TD fortunately the Bama defender dropped the ball. To his credit he quickly discovered what his limitations were and played within them to perfection.

Sorry to hear that he will not be able to play and wish him the best of luck. I'm glad he'll be able to continue as a coach.

My late father-in-law a Knoxville native attended Alabama on a baseball scholarship during a period of time when Tennessee did not scholarship baseball players. As such he became an ardent Alabama fan.

In 1995 I took him to the Bryant Museum the day we finally beat Bama after a 9 year drought. We were greeted by John Mark and he took my father-in-law around the museum. I was struck by not only how friendly he was to my father-in-law but to me in my Tennessee orange.

My son a year later had a teacher who was an ardent Auburn that had a Down's child born to him. Shortly after the birth Stallings called him and spoke to him explaining the resources that were available to Down's children and counseling him on his feelings.

A few years later we waited at a local mall to get Gene Stallings to autograph a cap for my father-in-law and had the opportunity to talk to Gene &Ruth Stallings for a few minutes as the session ended.

They are very classy people and our thoughts and prayers go out to them.
