Great article. You read that and just shake your head and ask, "what the hell were they thinking?"
She has the look of a Lady Vol: clean-cut, athletic and spirited. I predict she will be a good fit.
We should have taken West Virginia last year when we had the chance. I guess their TV market was deemed to be too small. I think it would weaken the conference to bring mid-majors in, and I hope they won't be considered. Cincinnati, in my oppinion, is worthy of consideration, as is NC State, VA Tech and Maryland. I cant think of any other big market schools in the region that would be worthy.
Downing's attorney said Downing was fired and can't find another job because of the pending charges. Just maybe it has nothing to do with the charges. Maybe even Alabama employers don't want a sleazy pos like this working for them. If I were an employer and saw any of my employees in the video just standing there and laughing while this assault took place, they would be fired too.

This is the first time I actually watched the video. Amazing that not one bama fan stepped up to help the guy, they were all too busy laughing and taking pictures. I have to believe (and want to believe) that if this had happened in Tennessee, someone would have come to guy's defense, and Downing would be picking up his teeth.
OK, I'm a pretty liberal guy. I voted for our half African-American President, my very best friend is African-American and my commanding officer, whom I probably respect more than any man other than my father, is African-American. So why do I not understand why this award exists?
I don't know why anything you do as a professional athlete should be any factor in consideration for a college honor. Some players did not start in college, but were big stars in the NFL. So let the NFL honor them. I think your college performance should be the only consideration for having your college number retired.
So, Big Ten teams have it tougher because they play 9 conference games and the SEC teams only play 8 (ignoring the fact that the SEC has a championship game, so the SEC champ plays 9 SEC games). Does this guy really believe that playing 9 Big Ten opponents is tougher than playing 8 SEC opponents? I wonder if he has ever looked at the Big Ten's record against SEC opponents. I also wonder if he is aware that the SEC has won 8 of the 12 BCS National Championships (including the last 6), and the rest of world has won 6, with the Big Ten winning a grand total of 1 in 2002 (10 years ago). If I were the Big Ten Commissioner, I don't think I would be wanting people to compare the Big Ten with the SEC.
Pat is definitely the gift that keeps on giving. More great publicity for UT. There is no way to measure her value to UT. Hard to believe that many were questioning the $1 million bonus. This award alone is worth more than $1 million to the University. As always, any publicity about Pat is positive. I don't recall ever seeing a negative story about her. Not even when she went 3 rounds with that raccoon.

The ultimate irony. Sort of like crashing a party and complaining about the facilities.
in response to JimmyJoe: I don't think it's news... It's a business deal. I could get Phil to come over to my house and we will name the oak tree in my front yard after Pat.... Then pick a day to have a yard sale to dedicate it and make a couple of dollars because of it... Then let the paper write an article about it like we really did something special and newsworthy. Don't get me wrong...I love Phil and Pat...It just seems pretty cheap to me.

I really doubt that anybody loves the University of Tennessee more than I do. But I guess I'll get called a troll by some moronic poster too, because I think you made a very good point. I can't blame people for trying to make a buck (or a few million), but it is odd that a commercial gimmick is being reported as a news story. The developer must advertise in the KNS.
There's no way to express how surprised I was. I am still in a state of shock. I will never get over this. I know life still goes on, but what's the point to it all now? Nothing really matters any more. Damn, why? WHY??
The gift that keeps on giving. The university stays in the spotlight as Coach Pat keeps bringing in the awards. There is no way to measure what a treasure she has been for UT.

I went straight to the comments to see who would be the first loser to post a political hate comment. Congratulations scumbag. Now go to Rush Limbaugh's site so we can talk sports.
Have not been to a Final Four since 2008? That was eons ago. I think Woodrow Wilson was President and gas was 5 cents a gallon. I'm not sure that women even had the right to vote then. 2008?? I had no idea it had been that long. No one is ever going to respect a basketball program that hasn't been to the Final Four since 2008.

Pathetic reflection of what Tenn. is becoming along with the rest of the ReTHUGliCONS.Second, she could back bill the state and university of "licensing" her name, image, et all, all these years... Be serious "she still" should get huge "licensing fees"!! THANK YOU PAT for all you have done and will continue to do for Tennessee Athletics, basketball, and most of all women!!

From one Democrat to another: Please don't bring politics on this site. Sports should be an escape from that. And, I'm sure that, like all retired state workers, she will have health insurance. I definitely agree with your comments about Coach Pat, and I am confident Coach Warlick will continue the tradition. Go Vols (and Lady Vols)!
in response to arkyvol: i wonder if some of those four and five star recruits ever read these boards, you know the ones whose skin color is the same as our president. some of these comments sound like they'd be more appropriate in a kkk meeting. they just might start to wonder if they should break their backs for those idiots.

Very good point. Although, it appears to me that it is only a small minority of the posters that are spewing hatred. Unfortunately, those are the ones that stand out and get noticed. Hopefully potential recruits will see that their comments do not represent the majority of UT fans.
in response to DwayneElizondoMountainDewHerbertCamacho: All of you here that are posting with negative remarks about the President, get your head out of your a** and go to Breitbart or somewhere else. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is a recognition made by the Office of the President of the United States. That same office has been occupied by Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Jefferson, and Kennedy. It's the OFFICE, not the man, that bestows the honor you self-aggrandizing idiots. Those of you who claim that you fought for your right to make stupid statements on a message board; had you actually served, you would know that its the OFFICE of the Commander-in-Chief you serve, not the man, so leave the unnecessary and distracting insults to your facebook page. So, to Coach Summitt, I say once again: Thank you for being a shining light of inspiration for the State of Tennessee and a magnificent ambassador. You deserve this award. To those of you ranting about Obama when you should be praising Pat...get a life.

Great post, poster with the very long name. I concur with everything you said.
Congratulations Coach Summitt.
It's embarrassing that some Tennessee fans are so consumed with hatred that try to ruin this great honor for Coach Summitt and the University of Tennessee. Unfortunately, all the disgusting fans are not in Alabama and Florida. Obviously, we have our share too.
Forfeit? Really? I guess it happens, but I've never heard of a voluntary forfeiture at this level. It sure leaves a bad taste in your mouth to lose without even making an effort to win. Hard to imagine that they couldn't come up with a 4th player somehow.
John Adams has a good column about how Coach Sal Sunseri is trying to emphasize toughness with the football team, and teach them to play through pain. Maybe the Lady Vol tennis team could borrow him for a few days.
I love it. Toughness has been the missing element the last few years. I remember a hand-to-hand combat instructor saying: "If someone is trying to kill your child, your mother, your wife or girlfriend, you're not going to worry about how tired you are or how much you hurt. The only thing that will matter is killing your enemy. That's the way you must approach every fight." Go Vols, get tough!
I hope we have some team leadership this year. That's something that was obviously lacking last year.
Looks like Palardy has some real competition this year (punting and kicking). It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
Is it normal for a coach from another school to call and ask a coach to release a player who has not asked to be released from her scholarship? That seems a little odd. Anyway, this girl obviously has a love for the game and a love for UT. Wish we had 100 more in all sports with that attitude. My guess is that she will be a great coach some day.

It's a relief to see an honest post. Some of theses people were starting to worry me. It's like one hug would suddenly turn this slimey jerk into a decent person. He put on a nice show for the media, but he's still Geno.
in response to JerseyJill: What's with all these Women's Basketball teams hiring men to replace fired/ retired coaches? Mississippi, Mississippi State, Indiana, Illinois and more. Where are all the good women coaches? Do you suppose these men would have taken the job 30 years ago when the position paid a few hundred/thousand and they had to wash the uniforms?

I don't know if Geno did it to me or not, but I have always had a bias against men coaching women's basketball. I think I'm pretty liberal in regard to hiring the most qualified person, regardless of sex, race, religion or orientation, but I still have a gender bias in regard to coaching women's basketball. Maybe that would change if a major college ever hired a woman to coach a men's team, but I doubt if that will ever happen.
Wonder if he was using a corked pole.
Let's give Climer some slack. After all, it must be pretty sad going through life as David Climer. The glass is always half empty and every silver lining has a dark cloud. He's the kind of guy who brightens up a room just by leaving, and couldn't have many, if any, real friends. Spreading gloom is all he knows how to do, and you have to admit that he's pretty good at it. In fact, he probably hates himself more than most UT fans hate him. So, give him some slack.
I guess Muschamp borrowed a few pages from Urban Meyer's playbook. I mean, as a new coach you wouldn't want to start making changes too fast.
They should not compare Candace Parker's dunks to Griner's. Griner is 6'8". There would have to be something wrong with a 6'8" man or woman who couldn't dunk.
in response to RLL59: I haven't heard of any opposing coach nor players make comments about her gender..and am absolutely sure that Coach Summitt wouldn't. Nor have I heard any comments from any of the players whom she teamed with over the years, nor their parents, whom I'm sure would have been concerned if their daughters were showering with a male. Maybe I don't listen to enough talk radio. If I had problems distinguishing between men and women, I certainly wouldn't tell anyone via the internet. But apparently several here don't have that reluctance.

Its not like Dooleys players (Gerald jones) who tells recruits to go elsewhere (Auburn) or guys like Poole who tries to tell you idiots the players quit on Dooley. Thanks for the compliment. Enjoy the NIT while Vandy plays in the Big Dance again, after playing in the World Series and a Bowl..Man UT is a nobody huh...

I was laughing so hard at your comment that I forgot the score of the Vandy-UT game. Do you remember? Oh, and about that bowl game Candy went to, how did that work out for you? I mean, you played a team UT destroyed, so I guess you won, right? "Everybody wants to be a Dore these days." That's the funniest post of the year so far.
Would Denver really offer Peyton Manning when they have Tim Tebow? Just kidding.
The SEC tournament illustrated just how balanced the SEC is. The SEC teams making the NCAA tournament should do very well. Hopefully, the Vols will represent the conference well in the NIT.
Can't explain it, and I think I'm pretty liberal in most areas, but I have a huge sexist bias when it comes to women's college basketball: I don't like having men coaching women's basketball. Maybe Geno did it to me. Anyway, I hope the Kentucky coach won't be considered.
Of course you can't pin a loss on one call. However, this was a tight game in overtime, 14 seconds left, and the ref is standing right there and looking right at the Ole Miss player when the ball bounced off his face. You can't blame the loss on one call, but the ref should not be given a pass either. Everyone saw what happened except for him (apparently).
At the beginning of the season, I never thought this team would have a winning record and be eligible for the NIT. Now, let's make the best of this NIT opportunity.
The rubber match is on. It's time for some revenge. Somehow, I hope they can rekindle the fire they displayed against Kentucky.
Can't argue with the drop in the rankings after the loss to Arkansas, but it still seems strange to be ranked 3 notches below a team we just beat 91 to 54.
It's been a while since there was a story mentioning Fulmer. I guess it was time to throw some more red meat to the Fulmer haters.
I'll be a big Texas A&M fan when they play their first conference game. I hope they get off to a great start and destroy Florida.

...Why did you need to post this story twice?
Why did you need to post this story twice?
The Lady Vols maintained a high energy level throughout the game, even after a couple of horrible calls went against them. Isn't it about time for that skinny blonde ref to retire? Man, she made some ignorant calls last night. Anyway, if they can maintain that energy level, even in adversity, they can salvage the season.
There seems to be a lot of speculation that Peyton Manning and Todd Helton are looking for jobs. There is a possibility that they could both be out of work soon, and I know they must both really need the money, so I certainly wish them luck.
A very talented group, and one of the best looking teams in college athletics.
I hope it all comes together this year. I really don't like this losing, and don't want to get used to it. We shall see.
