Yeah, one quoted Dooley, this one the players. Two different perspectives. Too bad that baffles you.
in response to Ironcity: The NCAA has not turned down the hardship he can't file until he has been in school for two semesters. Glad Saban didn't tell Sentimore he couldn't go to an SEC school. Glad Kelly didn't put restrictions on Bullard. Good coaches manipulate the press to their advantage some coaches (like Dooley)don't. The fact of the matter is the kid doesn't want to be here. He still has to sit and redshirt a year if he transfers to any D1 school so their is a penalty for the kid. One other thing, if I was in school 600 miles away and my dad was sick and I wanted to be near him and still play big time football. I would do whatever it took to do that. That includes going to the press with my complaint. Dooley should be smart enough and compassionate enough to understand that sometimes its better to just cut bait and move on. In this case he blew it.

Sentimore went to a JC from Alabama. Saban obviously did not give him an unconditional release.
After a year there, he could go anywhere he wanted, which in this case is Tennessee.

Zero. And Danny O'Brien, one of the top Vol commitments in this upcoming class, FROM MICHIGAN, has reaffirmed his love for Tennessee.
Try again.

in response to manniesghost1903: According to most of you Arnett's motive is to transfer to Michigan or Michigan State. Maybe that is not the real motive. One news report indicated Arnett had talked about transferring "for months." If that is true, surely the sports news hounds at KNS and Vanderbilt's The Tennessean, would have broken this story long ago, especially The Tennessean. Signees are initially advised upon entering school about transfer rules and polices. It is intereting that this story came out several weeks before Arnett would have been able to officially begin the process of asking and applying for a transfer. Why did Arnett make this public before the end of his first year in accepting an Athletic Scholarship? There seems to be information being passed around which states the NCAA has dismissed his request for hardship. Is it because his reasons for the hardship request were not valid or was it due to the fact he made his request too soon? Some of you will say these issues are due to a lack of intelligience on the part of Arnett. I think every bit of his actions have been orchestrated. Perhaps by a one of the Big Ten Schools in question? While Arnett is a good athlete,I do not think he is worth sanctions for tampering. I believe this incident, in conjunction with the performance at the Kentucky game, shows there is a movement to revolt against Derek Dooley. This is because several underclassmen have concluded Coach Dooley is not competent to run a competitive football program in the SEC. They want to play for a Coach who has the ability to win against the top SEC teams and who will organize a staff which will provide training, preparation and encouragement for many team starters to have a chance to play at the next level. To also allow them to have success and fun on the football field. I think the majority of the team realize Tennessee needs a good experienced head football coach and unfortunately they have found Derek Dooley "ain't it."

How about education at UT as well? How could he have passed freshman English? If he did, standards have slipped quite a bit since my days on the Hill!

Derek Dooley will face criticism fair/unfair, it comes with territory and he knew this when he accepted the job" So, to sum it up for you. In this "factual" haha post of yours. You said everyone closed their eyes and pretended there were no problems after 98. That is absolutely not true. You said Fulmer quit recruiting at a high level. I gave you the fact that he had top 10 classes to prove that statement wrong. Lastly you described his last 10 years as lost profit which is also opinion. I gave you the FACTS that UT was top 25 seven of the ten year. Top 15 five of the ten and #4 in 2001. Also won the SEC East 3x in those ten years. Now you want to try to change what you said. So now you are saying UT had more talent than any school in the country? I thought Fulmer couldnt recruit? lol. And you didnt just say his production declined. That is fact. You said his last 10 years were lost profit, making it out like UT wasnt any good during that time. Also just to point out another error for you. UT was 5-6 in 2005. And if Fulmer hadnt been fired right before the Wyoming game in 2008 then I believe UT wouldve finished 6-6. To answer your question of why he was fired. It was because fans had unrealistic expectations for UT and wouldnt accept any excuses for Fulmer like losing a great Off co and having to install a whole new offense. Some fans where calling for him to be fired years before 05 and expecially before 08. Some fans will only be happy if UT is winning Championships. I feel sorry for those fans though cause the fact is that since the league split in 92 it made it even harder to win a Championship. Fulmer didnt get the luxury of claiming and SEC title for finishing tied for best SEC record like he accomplished in 01 and 07. I guess if some fans want to judge success and failure by one game in Atlanta at the end of the season that their perrogative, but I enjoyed alot of games and seasons after 98 and was proud of the Vols. I would take Fulmer's last 10 years over what we've experienced for the last 3 years anyday. I do hope Dooley can get things turned around from last years miserable season and dont see any reason not expect 8 wins next year. I just cant wait till firing Fulmer starts paying off and UT starts winning Championships.

in response to westknoxrepub: So Martin signed one five star player, who is enrolling mid-year because of a bad decision by the TSSAA, and it came down to us and Florida because Memphis and Kentucky couldn't offer him a scholarship or make him a "recruited walk on" and all of a sudden he's a great recruiter? The fact remains he handed out too many scholarships to undeserving players and lucked out to get Stokes. Now if Stokes pays off, Stokes pays off, but his overall recruiting still needs to improve. Buzz recruited Loften (whom he also lucked out on, though mostly do to the ignorance of other coaches) but couldn't win with him and his overall recruiting was still medicore at best.

What does Martin recruiting Stokes, who could have gone anywhere beyond the list of schools allegedly considered, have to do with Buzz? I normally laugh off trolls like you, but your lack of logical thinking defines you as a sub-troll, a kind of low-life, bottom-feeding pond scum.
We don't have many legends at Tennessee. Why so many of our so-called fans tarnish their reputations is beyond me. Only very, very small minded people would trash Majors or Fulmer.

Jeez, man, when you are playing your third string quarterback, you don't call bootlegs. You can't afford another injury at that position.

That was a linebacker who made the pick, not a defensive back.

But then Doogie was a fictional character.

Great grammar, Griff.

I'm not saying we don't compete this year, I'm just saying that because of the current situation we should focus MORE on developing talent for the future. We have nothing to lose. Face it, we aren't winning the SEC this year... it's not happening. So why not put in the younger guys that normally wouldn't start? Building for the future is not such a bad thing. I'm just being a realist. If UT comes back and wins the east and the SEC I'll eat crow, but I don't see it. Next year, I think we can be preseason favorites if CDD uses this year as an experience building exercise. That is all.

Dude, check the two deep. It's mainly freshmen and sophomores. Who are the "younger guys" you want to play? Eighth graders from Bearden?
Ever so often, I wander back over here, hoping that maybe, just maybe, more of those who post here might have learned a little bit about football.
What a waste of time. I feel for those who have no other place to discuss Tennessee football. What a wasteland, populated by dumbazzes.
Great line on Paterno! LOL! It's time for him to hang it up when his own players have to worry about killing him on the sidelines.
And those who think a humorous newspaper picks column is bulletin board material are delusional at best, moronic at worst. I'm glad the vast majority of our fans are smarter than this.

I've been a TN fan since Dewey Warren was the QB but I know there are positive and negative things each season. I like to hear his thoughts on each.

Great post. Most of the Adams haters are morons who not only don't understand the role of a columnist, but have never actually paid for a newspaper in their entire lives.
They are epitomized by the illiterate who called Adams a loser but couldn't even correctly spell the word. Those five-letter words are really tough for such bottom feeders.
Pop ups on every single picture? How annoying.

I bought a walkman for the games that had a tv audio feed on it that worked great until the digital switch. I could listen to the games on channel 8 at the stadium until then. You know it's bad when I would tune into to hear the audio of Jefferson Pilot instead of the Vol Network. He stinks. I'd even go so far as to say I'd take Mickey Dearstone over Bob now.

This is not some sort of snub towards anyone wishing to join the SEC and this certainly wont stop the conversations. This was simply, clearly, a legal statement. The SEC will not now nor ever make themselves liable for bringing in another institution with an existing obligation. I guarantee you that, come tomorrow when Texas A&M has their meeting and decide to leave the Big 12 of their own accord, the SEC will review the situation and invite them after the fact. In that way, the current SEC schools would not be laible for suit for tampering or liable for any exit penalty A&M may face. The same would be said for any other rumored institution with a current conference affiliation. The SEC lawyers crafted this statement. Let's wait to see what A&M's meeting brings to the table.

So was this a story about Holloway and his exploits or Battle's coaching career? It didn't do either possible theme justice, though Condredge's performance that day against Clemson was one for the ages. I was there and the play seemed to take forever. At one point, I swear Condredge had scrambled all the way out to the 35 -- on a two-point play!

Not true about Atlanta. It's mainly transplants and virtually every SEC school has its biggest out-of-state booster club here, including UT.
Often, Dawgs find themselves outnumbered here.
Just happened to be in the neighborhood and decided to drop in and see if good news resulted in the same ill-informed negativity. Yep.
Over on 247 there are NO TROLLS at all, just intelligent Tennessee fans discussing the news of the day. You don't get slimed when you disagree with somebody. There is universal respect and good manners.
It's amazing how having to pay a few bucks eliminates all the riffraff and improves the whole neighborhood.
And by the way, TJ, before the Internet came along and newspapers made the terrible decision to give away their product for free, everybody paid for their news every day. That is the wave of the future as well, BTW.

No, it upsets the he(( out of me. A kid with the potential to be one the greatest in Tennessee history was babied and allowed to pout his way through three years of underperformance. Then, nobody with anything approaching courage sat him down and convinced the kid that he wasn't performing well enough to be an NBA player. It upsets me as badly as anything that's gone down with this program lately.
I called this shot. I said he wouldn't be drafted. I also said he will never play in the NBA. I stand by the second call as well.

Amazing how many of those games I remember as my personal favorites -- other than the '28 and '51 games. I'm not that old.
Since none of the above are going to get the job, wouldn't it have been a better, smarter poll to have a "None of the Above" choice?
Very nice piece.
I echo the above comments about the quality of Ward's broadcasts versus the mediocrity of the current blabber. He's had 13 years and has never developed a signature call. "Into the checkerboards" is bland and inane. He makes countless mistakes (rarely corrected) fails to deliver needed information, lacks emotion and still delivers an inferior Jefferson Pilot TV account on radio, which is a different medium that requires a more refined product.
But this story, thankfully, is about The Voice. there will never be another like him. A gentleman in person, generous to a tee, as classy as they come. Ward of the Volunteers!
I bet those crappy Commodores take that money and put it into worthless stuff, like academics.
I knew Bud (and Haywood) and worked with both back in the late '70. It's a little unfair to Bud to compare him with Haywood, because that fine gentleman was one of a kind. I will say of Bud that he was a pro and always treated me and other media members with respect. Forty-five years of faithful service is quite a run. And the dork who said SIDs do nothing does not have a clue. Particularly back in the old days when they didn't have a big staff, Haywood and Bud worked their tails off for UT.
The word "c-r-a-p" made the story but we can't use that word in a post? What's up with that?
Charles Davis is no slouch himself. He is a fine broadcaster and we should be proud of this well-spoken ex-Vol.

Dooley continues to impress with his street smarts. The VFL program is going to pay huge dividends and other schools are going to be copying it chapter and verse.
Monte's Punk didn't even play golf. It's good to have a coach capable of playing a man's game during the offseason. It's also good for the Big Orange Tour, or whatever they call it.

The NBA is a corrupt business that has been allowed to ruin college basketball. What Adams is saying is simply common sense. Granted, college basketball players are ready for the pros quicker than football players. Two years is better than one, but three is the best solution and can preserve the college game, which is much, much better basketball than what they play in the pros.

Gerry, of course no one "officially" comments. But I've covered coaching changes and athletic programs -- especially one with an AD under fire like Hamilton -- leak like a sieve. Obviously, some "sources" are wrong with some of the things they say, but others are right on the money.
Reporters work hard to make friends and people who trust those reporters tell them what they know off the record. It's the way it works.
in response to GoVols025: Butler is still in the NCAA Tourney, so of course we are going to hear nothing about Stevens. I doubt if Stevens is even responding to 3rd party inquiries ... he has a team to coach. The other thing we all need to understand is that anything heard and repeated by any news outlet is pure speculation. Most states have laws against releasing info about a recruiting situation by any public organization. UT is a public organization.

Total BS. Reporters have sources and sources talk. There is no law against people talking to reporters about potential coaching hires.
The 1-3-1 zone defense shouldn't be a mystery. Ray Mears ran it for years. There should be tons of tape on it.
in response to tnexplorer: Gart5Bama was 12-4 conference, beat UT, Georgia (twice) and Kentucky. All three of them are in tourney and Bama beat them all. So again I repeat-- "Nope, UT is one of the sacrificial (sp?) pigs in the tourney. Hate to say it but Alabama should be there instead of UT."
