volguy40--just so you know, I suggested removal of your post because it is obscene. This is not the place to dump your garbage. As a UT grad and long-time Vols fan, I believe that Billy Donovan runs a clean program and that he and UF have been good for the SEC and UT. Yes, UF has some low class posters on this site (see overated, et al), but so does UT. Don't judge an organization by its low class hangers on. Glad Tyler is staying and hope it works out well for him and the Vols.

I don't post here often, but this time I just couldn't help it. I agree with dfreeman about Lofton et al. He, Jujaun Smith, Tyler Smith (so far for just a year) and Dane Bradshaw (gone for a year now), gave everything you could ask to the UT bball program. Bet your boss would be proud of you if you gave as much effort and contributed on your job as much as any of these guys! These guys are not the 5 star, McD All Americans that some other programs have. So, though not a god as some have opined, Pearl must be a pretty good coach. No, the team did not play as well the last few regular season games and thru the tournaments as a lot of folks would have liked, but look what they accomplished--versus 3,4,5,6 years ago. Some of us have memeories that are too short. Anybody that can't be happy with this program over the last 3 years needs to take a few deep breaths--or get a life.

The story will focus on how Pearl has taken the team from underdogs to champions in his short tenure here.
Champions of what??

This team finds a way to win! Pearl has instilled a sense of toughness that the UT men's BB team hasn't had in many a year. They never give in and compete for 40 minutes. I never thought they would get 19 offensive rebounds, out rebound Memphis by 40-25 and outscore them 16-2 in the paint. How far can they go?!?!

Coughed up another double digit lead in the second half with turnovers and pitiful free throw shooting down the stretch. Vols looked as bad today as the looked good against UF. They'll have to perk up against Arkansas with their big front line. Unlike UF and LSU, the Arkansans are not freshmen & sophomores.

A win is a win is a win--especially in the SEC on the road. However, these guys have shown a scary penchant for coughing up very big leads. I thought with their depth, they would be extending leads late in the game. MSU was within a traveling violation of tying or going ahead. J. Smith's lack of discipline at the end could have been very costly. This team is very good--certainly by Tennessee standards--but lack of discipline and a killer instinct along with poor free throw shooting is likely to bite them before the end of the season.

JP's also a liability at the free throw line. Against Alabama he was 1 for 4 on FTs. The three that he missed weren't close. On his drives to the basket, he's likely to get fouled. Unless he makes the basket, it's the same as a turnover.

I usually like to listen to Clark Kellog, but I agree that he showed a lot of big 10 bias. The CBS commercials wear me out. Go Vols!!!!

I graduated from Lee High School with Condredge in 1971. He was, and is, the best athlete I ever saw--bar none. He was terrific in football, basketball and baseball. He also set records in track--on days when there wasn't baseball practice--that stood for many years. If it had a ball, and/or they kept score, he was fabulous. He would have been a Montreal Expo if his mother had signed the bonus-filled the contract they offered her then 17 year old son. She wanted him to get an education. He was an awesome shortstop--with the glove and the bat and an incredible basketball player. But I'll never forget the day Bill Battle and the UT staff came to Lee and signed him to a football scholarship. He didn't even play quarterback at Lee until we were seniors. Many folks in Huntsville never forgave him for signing with UT.
Schools in Huntsville had only been integrated for a couple of years before we started high school. There were significant racial difficulties during our time in high school. I remember a basketball game that we played at Butler that was never finished due to a near riot. Condredge was caught in the middle. Some of the black kids called him Oreo because they felt he was too close to the whites. Times were very turbulent. It should be remembered that Lester McClain (at Tennessee)in 1968 became the first black football player in the SEC. Wendell Hudson (basketball)and Wilbur Jackson were the first black signees at Alabama in 1970. There had been no black SEC quarterbacks in the SEC before Condredge. In many ways he was a trailblazer.
When we went to UT in the fall of 1971, freshmen weren't eligible to play on the varsity. I remember the Notre Dame freshman team came to UT. Over 40,000 fans came to see the game. Holloway was spectacular as UT won by a ton. Many memories of varsity games, too--TD passes to Larry Sievers, incredible scrambles, unbelievable toughness.
This is an honor that is well-deserved and long overdue. Congratulations Condredge!!
On Better late than never for Holloway
