Great job. Need more like him. Go VOLS!
Not going very far until we get some pitching. Not much in the pantry behind Godley, who will be gone next year. Many are freshmen, so hopefully they will improve a lot next year. Only 2 seniors, so can't bring in much.
Just seems a little early to be doing this to me, but maybe he has saved the University big bucks behind the scene.
Not impressed with the performance so far, didn't even make it past the first round of the NIT. If they make it past the first round of the NCAA, then maybe start considering an extension and raise. Anything less should not get any consideration. Don't make the same mistake that they did with Dooley.
It used to be that we paid people for good performance in this country. I am not sure when this got turned around, but it appears you can now get a lot of money for bad performance. While Dooley probably thinks he did not get the full opportunity he should have gotten, I don't think we hired a coach to give us the first 3 year losing streak in a hundred years, not to mention possibly the worst defense ever.
How do you give a person a contract that allows him to keep his full salary and get an additional salary after he is fired? Dooley should return that portion of his UT buy out equal to the salary he gets from the Cowboys. Same with Chaney and his new job. Its the right thing to do.
Concur, seen nothing to indicate he will not do something like that again.
Disappointed with losing Bell, but clearly he was just a fair weather fan, not a VFL. Give Jones and staff a year and we will really see what they can do.
I hope this will reduce the payout that UT has to give him. If not, he and Hamilton should be sued for waste and abuse.

Its his first year, and many recruits had already decided before he was even hired. I think they can end up in the 20 to 25 range this year, but I think they have a good chance for a top 10 next year.
NO to ND, keep it in the SEC.
Was always happy to see him go, more so with every gaff. Good riddance.
College is a little better than the pros, which has always been pretty much run and gun, but I still much prefer the general excitement of college football. So many different possibilities for things to happen. Go VOLS.
I agree with many of the ideas, but don't see the need to name each season ticket holder (they may not want to be named, and the average fan probably doesn't care), but a general thanks to the season ticket holders each game would be appropriate. Don't see any benefit of two Smokey's. I like the idea of some type of reward for a high noise level.

In my opinion, a Vol for Life either graduated in good standing or left early for the pros in good standing, otherwise they don't qualify.
Just checked - Cincinnati's scoring defense was #12 this year, #20 last year. If he can bring that to UT, and keep the good offense, they will do well, but I think we have to give him a year to get this years mess cleaned up.

in response to USnavyFEvol8251:
Why does nobody talk about John Chavis?
I thought I read a few years ago that Chavis did not want to be a head coach. He is definitely one of the best DCs in the nation, and I could see giving him a shot if he wanted it.
First choice, Gary Patterson, good defensive coach, but will probably stay at TCU. Second, Butch Jones, has done well at Cincinnati.Third, Bobby Wilder, Old Dominion (FCS, 1-AA). Five years ago, ODU football did not exist. Built a new program from scratch, Has a 38-9 record, worst season 8-3, currently in semi-finals of the FCS play-offs.
in response to tnoutlaw2001#228008: I think Gary Patterson has to be option 1, pay him and get him here, he fits everything (Athletic dept.)said we want. There's nothing keeping him tied to TCU except loyalty. Then maybe Butch Jones option 2. He has been a head coach a few years now, and if he keeps up what Kelly has done (he's followed him as HC twice now). Then UT might be a great fit and be very happy. I don't think Gundy would ever leave his Alma Mater and 3.2 million. Plus I'm sure they would pay more, or make someone else pay 5 million to steal him, that's if he wanted to leave.

I agree, except I doubt Patterson will leave TCU, and he already makes $3.5 Mil. I think Jones would do well.
Most people probably won't like this, but with the financial problem of paying off the buyouts, if they play well and beat Kentucky with Chaney, make him interim HC for next year. He has the offense running well (I think the Vandy melt-down is more Dooley's fault than Chaney), and this will give him a tryout without such a large buyout. He would probably keep the O coaches, so no buyout for them. I think he would do better than Dooley, and this gives us a low cost try-out. Just a thought.
I don't understand everyone's infatuation with Gruden. His overall winning percent as a HC is .540, and with his last team Tampa, .509, and he was never a college head coach. This is not a great record. I think we can do better.
I'm sure most people will not want to hear this, but I think the Vols should take a close look at Old Dominion University's (ODU) HC Bobby Wilder. 5 years ago ODU didn't have a team. They started a new program, and in 4 seasons with Wilder as HC, they are 37-9 and a playoff team last year and selected for the playoffs this year (10-1). Worst record was 8-3 in 2010. This coach knows how to build a winning program.
History has shown that most Pro coaches don't do that well with colleges. Forget Gruden, look for a good college coach.

Franklin's attitude reminds me of Kiffin, very arrogant and not very concerned about the rules. We don't need another Kiffin.
Any lawyers out there? Can we sue Hamilton for the idiot buyout he gave to Dooley?
in response to florida-volfan: Mike Hamilton and others including Jimmy Cheek gave this guy a contract like he was a top notch proven coach who has won games. Yet he never had a winning record and was a head coach at La Tech. Even Wil Muschamp at Florida does not have that kind of buyout, Florida will hardly owe him anything if they were to let him go now. In my opinion anybody associated with this hire should be fired and let go with the rest of the coaching staff, it was a horrible business decision. The question is...does UT have enough money to buy out this overpaid coaching staff, and bring in another high paid coaching staff next year, because you know Dave Hart has to hit a homerun with this next hire or it could be him on the chopping block

Disagree with firing all the coaches. Jay Graham and Pittman have done an excellent job in their first year, and I hope a new HC would try to retain them. Not that upset with the other O coaches, but the D coaches must go.

I supported Dooley if he won out, but clearly this is bad, no more. It is entirely possible that Hart is contacting coaches in the background. Many coaches do not want the distraction of public knowledge that they are talking to another school before the season is over. I have no problem if he is working things in the background. They will make the announcement when the time is right. I am not a big Cheek fan, however, as he stuck with Hamilton when it was clear hew should be fired. He should probably go.
in response to arkyvol: 7-5 in and of itself doesn't mean spit. what's important is the composition of 7-5. this season had five wins built into it (ga.state, akron, troy, vandy and kentucky). take those out of the equation and you're looking at 2-5 (I'm being optomistic here as vandy is no gimmee and we all know what can happen to a dooley coached team against kentucky). if the vols lose to vandy and mizzou and upset kentucky, their real record is 1-7. i won't even go into things like ranked teams and sec teams. if that's not enough to get the boy who should never have been hired fired, then the vols ought to discontinue football.

If you are going to say 5 wins are built in, then you really have to say Bama, Ga, SC and probably Fla were losses built-in, as these are very good highly ranked teams. Lets be fair about it.
Interesting dilemma, as the Vols may have both the best offense and worst defense they have ever had. At least defense has now stopped the last two teams (SC and Troy) in the 4th Qtr when they had to. No way Mizzou holds the Vols to 14 points as with UF, also no way the UT defense holds Mizzou to 7. May the best offense win. I still say if Dooley wins out, he should have another season, if not, he goes. If he wins and gets another season, much higher expectations for the future.
in response to FWBVol: As I stated in a post on another story, let's be realistic about the three straight years of starting 0-5 in SEC play. Yes, that number is a fact, but there's more to it than a blanket statement condemning Derek Dooley and the program. Two years ago, Dooley's first year, we had zero experience on the offensive line and at QB. Dooley was left with one offensive lineman, Dallas Thomas, that had ever started a game and he only had something like three or four starts. The rest of the offensive linemen were freshmen in 2010 and that line has now become a strength of the team. The 2010 UT squad was the youngest team in the nation and was playing several players under the alotted number of scholarships allowed. Back up to last year. We played the toughest schedule in the SEC. We were the only team from the East to play Alabama, Arkansas and LSU from the West and we still had to play Florida and Georgia. Speaking of Florida and Georgia, Hunter tears up his knee on the first offensive series against Florida and Bray breaks his hand against Georgia. This year has been frustrating because the defense has been awful, but our five SEC losses have all come to teams that, other than Mississippi State have been ranked in the top five at one time or another this year and MSU was undefeated coming into tonight's game with Alabama that the Bulldogs are losing. I'm not going for moral victories and I'm tired of close losses, but this is a game we played well enough to win. The horse-collar call in the second quarter on what would have been a Tennessee fumble recovery in USC territory was a bad call and the no call on what should have been an intentional grounding penalty a few plays later was even worse. Our schedule has been front end heavy and back end light for years. Move the Georgia or Florida game to November and move Vandy, Kentucky or Missouri to the front of our schedule and in none of the last three years would we have started 0-5 in SEC play. It's easy to spout off what the TV talking heads are pointing out, but let's look at the big picture before going into our Chicken Little and the sky is falling routine. Am I satisfied with where the program is now? No. Do I think Dooley needs to win now? Yes, the time is now. We can still win out and make a decent bowl game and next year will be the key for Dooley. Derek Dooley took a Tennessee job nobody seemed to want and has laid a foundation for success. We do need more players that will make plays on defense. And if Dooley does survive this year, next year will be the year for him to turn things around or get fired.

As long as he wins the last 4 to finish with a winning season, I agree he gets one more year. It is questionable if they finish the regular season at 6-6, and he should go if they finish worse than that. Interestingly, with this years offense and last years defense, I think they win at least 2 or 3 of those games.
A number of people are cutting the Defensive backs, and they could certainly play better, but also keep in mind that against both Georgia and Alabama, their receivers scored after pushing off from the UT DBs. That isn't from me, but was pointed out by the announcers. Unless they have changed the rules, those should have drawn a flag, but didn't. Against Georgia, if they were penalized they probably wouldn't have scored, which would have left a tie. I think the UT receivers should try pushing off a lot, since they are not being called, but of course they would then have to catch the ball.
Lets assess Dooley's record. This year, they have lost to 4 teams who have 1 loss between them, and are ranked #13 or higher. Clearly the defense is learning a new system, is not good this year. On offense, they are better overall, and if you don't believe the running game is much better, you have not been watching. Bray needs to learn to not get flustered and hurried at the end of a close game. If they finish the regular season with a winning record, he should have another year, 6-6 is a toss up, and with a losing record considering the last 4 teams they play, he needs to go. I just hate that we will pay him $4 Mil for doing nothing if he goes.
During his two games last year and in the last few games of the year before, Hunter was nearly un-coverable, and caught anything close to him. This year he is not getting open very often and has dropped a number passes he should have caught. I am not sure what happened, but I don't see him as a first round draft choice now. I hope he can get himself together.

That would be really stupid, maybe something that Hamilton would do.
They keep saying that Dooley is 0-13 against ranked teams. While Cincinnati was not ranked when UT beat them last year, I believe they were ranked at the end of the season, which to me counts more than being ranked early and not at the end, and I would not be surprised to see NC State ranked at the end of this season. Obviously we still need a lot of improvement, but a little credit is due here.

UT has outstanding facilities, great fan support, a strong history and the talent level is much improved from when Dooley took over, so I do not see why other coaches would not want to coach here. Unfortunately the idiot Hamilton set a bad precedent giving Dooley a 6 year contract with a large buyout. I hate the idea of paying someone millions for doing nothing, there should be a clause that for each year of a losing record, the buyout is reduced 20%. This is paying for not performing, which is not the American way. At any rate, if Dooley can finish with a winning record, he should have one more year.
in response to OrangePride: Yes....well, this is all potentially true. But any team on any loss can usually point to a few plays and say, "if only." But therein lies the difference between the really good teams and the ones who sit home at bowl season. We can fix alignment and tackle better..those are possible improvements. But we can't coach or improve speed and THATS been a HUGE problem in this secondary. Whether its closing speed, coverage speed, or read speed....it ain't been there on way too many occasions. About all you can do on that is change personnel, or put them in different positions where they won't be so exposed, or scheme it to minimize the weakness. We will see if the changes and coaching will survive Saturday's test. Make no mistake, MSU will be fighting and scratching all day. We will need our very best effort to prevail....but the good news? We have the talent to do just that and win this game. So go do it. GO VOLS!!

Interesting. Didn't we have nearly the same secondary (and same speed) last season, but I don't remember us giving up nearly as many long plays. While it is true the secondary has in some cases not caught someone, it seems to me it all starts with the linebackers being out of position.
Wow, the last couple of years it's been a situation of anything than can go wrong will go wrong. Need Witch Doctor to break this spell.
Remains to be seen.

Did you happen to note who they have played? Not real impressive.
I know many of you instant gratification people will not agree, but I think Dooley has them moving in the right direction. For the rest of the season, they will lose to Bama, and probably to SC. Get over it. I think they have a real chance to win the other 5 games if they can keep their focus. Barring a major meltdown, Dooley deserves another year for 2 reasons, 1- as mentioned I think they are heading in the right direction, and 2- UT has to quit paying people a lot of money for doing nothing.

It seems that the contract would state that if you commit a major NCAA violation, you wouldn't get a buyout. I think Hamilton, from an ACC school, was trying to sabotage an SEC school, unfortunately did a pretty good job. It also seems you would not get a buyout for incompetence, or intentional damages to the school, whichever is the case.

While Bray generally throws the ball well, he simply disappears in the big games. Not sure if that is his fault or the coaches, but he hasn't come close to beating a top 25 team.
Remind me, didn't the Gators have 5 or 6 pass interference/holding penalties against Vol receivers last year, couldn't cover them, and that was after Hunter left? And most were obvious. While they are probably better this year, I think we are also. Hopefully Fla. still has the same problem.
May also have something to do with him being from Florida.
Keep working, Malik Jackson, and I think you will do well in the NFL. Thanks for your effort for the Big Orange.
Can't believe that Brown, who's done nothing was drafted and Poole wasn't. Doubt Brown will go anywhere with his attitude.
