I originally had though Joan Cronin would make a good permanent AD especially considering all the issues UT athletics were having, and was disappointed when she was not. Now I am glad that did not happen based on these recent reports.

KNS, what is average GPA for all UT students so we have something to compare?
Watch ESPN shows the 1:30pm game is on ESPNU, not ESPN3 as currently reported here. Good for fans who wish to watch on TV.

Interesting. I sort of like it if no better alternative comes up. Of coursre, you have to get VT and NCS to agree and those rumors has been just that for a long time. Also the NCAA woud have to agree to a SEC playoff with semifinals and finals. Not likely.
Going to a nine game SEC schedule and 3 non conference games still makes the most sense. The non SEC games are mostly junk games anyway. I, and I suspect, most TN, AL, GA and Aub fans would hate to loose the permanent game.

As n example, the SEC Women's tournament is being blacked out here right now on ESPN3 even though no one here seems to be carrying it. We have the same issue with the men's regional SEC games on Wed. nights which are also not carried locally. These blackouts on ESPN3 are not always logical especially since ESPN took over the regional SEC broadcasts.
As to the Watch ESPN tablet app your cable company has to participate or so mine shows so you can log in, and most do not. If you know a way around that please post same. I would guess same blackouts of games anyway since that is really ESPN3.

It seems to be limited to some cable systems in the southeast. Cable systems elsewhere and Dish satellite generally do not carry it, we were told, because the pro sports coverage is limited. As mentioned, check ESPN3 on your computer, and hope that is not blacked out in your area as ESPN has started doing some games this year.
They also have carried a lot of Lady Vols games in the past

Yes, based on what we know now. Chaney's experience and dedication to UT will be hard to replace.
As requested by somebody, the Hargis article on recruiting bg by UT http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/20...
Chaney likely to Mo according to people at UT who should know. A shame since he stayed with UT (twice) when most others were bailing out and he also has said he also wants to be there. Ran a pretty good offense with what he had and the players played for him against KY. Also http://www.columbiatribune.com/weblog...

Did not know about Cafego, but Lauricella was second to a guy in the IVY league. You have to also add Shuler who was second to a FSU quarterback who was not even drafted by the NFL.
Friends and family who know Majors say he is a class guy - at least off the field

You nailed it. What many of us have thought for years, although we probably do have to add the loss of Gardner as the chief recruiter in GA and SC. After he left that did go down as well. Chavis plus Cutliffe and Gardner equaled a national championship and contributed to a great decade. Two left and no one should have been surprised at what happened.
As to Fulmer , same as Battle, Why did someone else not offer him a top head coaching job? Good at public relations and administration, but...

FWIW: Since those of us who have 401(K)s find this overall issue very interesting -S&P 500 Stock Index (at or near some relevant dates - best I could quickly find):Dec. 31, 1992 ... $436March 24, 2000 ... 1527Jan. 26, 2001 ... 1355Sept. 7, 2001 ... 1086Dec. 31, 2001 ... 1148Dec. 31, 2002 ... 880Oct. 9, 2007 ... 1565 Jan. 25, 2009 ... 832March 9, 2009 ... 676Today ... 1440
Not adjusted for inflation. If so, the March 2000 figure probably should be at least $2000 by now. Wish I had sold more in January 2001 (or late 2007). Would a, Should a. Too late now,
As to the real question in point here, as a two time grad and donor, I am completely opposed to hiring a lying scumbag like Petrino. We have had enough embarrassing situations recently. Leave these guys to the sidewalk (or gutter) fans and the outlaw schools, and lets hope UT goes after a class act who can win when the time finally comes. There has to be many coaches out there who would be a better choice, and UT is still a good, if not plum, job. Anyway Hart, or his successor, will make the choice, not us.
UT has the talent to beat Vandy, KY and Troy and probably Mo., and end up with 6 0r 7 wins this year. Dickey will return for 2103 at least. So the article is likely moot.
Go Vols. It is about time.
Gwinnett Arena is a great choice. Been there twice and thoroughly enjoyed it. Last time I looked, Gwinnett was the fastest growing county in the Atlanta area and one of the fastest in the US. Plenty to do there and in the entire Atlanta area. If you get bored in Atlanta you have a serious problem. Great location for this type of tournament. Smart move SEC. Make it permanent.
Glad to hear the parking is still free. Based on recent experiences, not sure I would want to be in downtown Nashville at night and walking to a car or motel blocks away. That location is preferred if you live in the Nashville area or near by, but not likely by too many others in the SEC or elsewhere.
in response to Sauce: It is totally bad taste to post these comments when UT is giving such an honor to a former player. Both Majors & Fulmer contributed greatly to their alma mater. Agreed. For those of us around in the 70s the program declined each year under Battle, a nice guy who inherited a first rate program from Dickey but who was in over his head. Even worse the SEC record declined each year, sorta like now, under Battle so that we were fighting Vandy and Ky for the cellar not Ala for the championship at the end. Like Fulmer, he apparently was never offered another major head coaching job. Majors did take over a program in serious decline and it just took longer to rebuild with the SEC becoming more competitive and to get the recruits than we liked. He was forced out by the administration (allegedly with a push from Fulmer) because he disagreed with them on some issues and spoke his mind. His last years as a coach at UT were generally pretty successful. He certainly left Fulmer with an excellent program and with much better players than he had inherited, and Fulmer took advantage of it as long as he was a successful recruiter and had both Chavis and Cutliff to help coach. Anyway, both Majors and Fulmer contributed to UT successes.
However, as clearly stated in the article, Majors was elected as a player not coach and was one of the best players UT ever had. His record there as a single wing tailback on offense, safety on defense and a punter speaks for itself , and those of us who started watching UT in the 50s were privileged to see him play.. Fortunately, the present administration had the courage to finally do the right thing. To slander him as many are doing over this well deserved honor is both disgraceful and an attack on a true Vol.

Auburn (I had always heard GT and Bobby Dodd) wanted to play UT early back when UT ran the single wing and that offense was based on precision and took a while to perfect each year.
As to Spurrier when Fulmer tried to get the date changed, the quote then was he preferred UT to go to Gainsville in the heat in Sept. rather that Fl come to Knoxville in the cold of Nov. He also used the FSU game as an excuse but that was only one weekend of 4 or 5 in November and when I checked it would have been easy to switch the game to early or mid Nov. Sept. was too early for the biggest SEC game of the year. The game played in late Nov. or early Dec. of 2001, because of 9/11, was an example of how great the game could be at the end of the season. Now I guess it does not matter since no longer a contest, but I would like to see Vandy and KY moved up to early in the season and some better games moved into November. Vandy always claimed thay had to finish the season with their instate rival, but noticed they later switched with KY.
About time, Great player and successful coach here and elsewhere.

I grew up knowing the people who sat around us and looked forward to seeing these people each year and cheering on the Vols for almost 46 years in the same section and the same seats. We were dedicated fans... then stepped in Hamilton. In order to keep our seats in the same section we had to fork over $15,000 a year every year and guarantee at least 10 years plus pay the inflated ticket prices. When an indivual is loyal all those years to have the rug pulled out from underneath you it leaves a bad taste and absolutly no trust. You ran us off UT...we still pull for the Vols but what a terrible feeling when you look up at that section where we used to sit and see all of the empty seats. GBO

I guess you hit a sore point with me. Similar situation here, after graduating, from 1966 to 2009 with 2 season tickets. Does leave a bad taste in your mouth after all those years of donations and other forms of support to my Colleges there. Guess the waiting list for these seats was not a large as they thought.
Add to this the added 12th game with a weak opponent and some of the other issues raised on these posts and it just no longer was worth it. Like many fans it became time to look for alternatives. The recent bad UT teams were really not an issue, as we long term fans have seen good and bad cycles before and know the good will return.
BTW, if you want a ticket for a few games and do not want to wait till the last minute to deal with scalpers, stub hub is a good alternative for most games. May pay a little over face value for the best games, but still a lot cheaper than than the prices (and large) donations required for decent season tickets. Just my two cents worth

Agree. I was a freshman when it first opened and saw many games after that as a season ticket holder. Surely they can find a good use for it after a renovation to bring it up to standards and save money doing this. School administrators are simply getting too much into building new buildings to impress people, and spending money that could best be used elsewhere.

Go back to the olde rule that wins against lower division schools do not count toward bowl game eligibility
Should be 9 conference games. Anything else is an insult to the fans of the SEC, especially those who pay big bucks to see the games. Hate to be one upped by the ACC and the other conferences.

For one who has been watching Lady Vols games since the 70s (longer than most of you have been born) and wanted her to be named AD before all of this happened, Climer unfortunately is right, not anti UT or anti Pat, just telling the truth as much as it hurts. We have seen friends and family with this disease and it does only get worst. Pat needs to leave, as head coach, with all of her reputation still in place. She has nothing more she needs to prove, and she still can serve an important role with Lady Vols and UT in some capacity in agreement with the new coach. Also, recruiting is vital this year with all the players lost. We need a stable program recruits can rely on. Pat is an icon. I have met her and talked with her, and she is a great person in my opinion, but like so many of us, there comes a time when we need to step down for the sake f ourselves and those who support us.
BTW, I did see Holly point Pat toward the other team to shake hands at the end of one of the later games. That is when I told my wife, this has gotten more serious that we had realized/hoped. I hope she makes the decision herself and believe she will do what is best for the program she has built and nurtured for so long, but something must happen soon rather than later if the program is to continue at the highest level that she has set for it.
Good luck Pat and best wishes going forward with your life.

Majors was the tailback but he was playing with a sore shoulder, as I recall, so Gordon played a lot in that game. He (Gorden) got off some great punts that day and Majors had one go out of bounds near the one yard line. It was a great classic game between two great defenses - SI voted it the best game played over some 25 year span. It is not all about running up and down the field when great defenses and coaches (Wyatt and Dodd) are involved. Also then players had to play both ways. Real players as Neyland called them.
It was not two fields goals. All American Majors hit All American Buddy Cruise (KEHS) on a pass and Cruise took it down near the goal at the start of the second half, and fullback Tommy Bronson then scored. After that, the defenses and the kicking game took back over. Very exciting (before the MTV generation). Shame no telecast back then. Had to listen to the radio and watch the replay later. I also thought of this game watching LSU-Ala
I also agree Majors was cheated out of the Heisman by the northern and mid western press that year for a Notre Dame quarterback, similar to Hank Lauricella (lost to a tailback from Princeton) five years earlier. Common bias back then. Of course, same overall fate for Shular and Manning in the 90s.

I believe that is correct which is why it was such a big deal. There was a riot afterwards partly fueled by over reaction from the Knoxville police when the Chattanooga fans tried to tear down the goal posts. A lot of tear gas that day - we had to circle around campus just to get to our cars -, and I think the Chattanooga/Hamilton County sheriff was even arrested by the police - later released..
Usually these games were one sided jokes and often free to the kids.
BTW, that same team also beat a good UNC team and the following year they beat a then ranked #1 and defending national champion LSC. A lot of ups and downs during the Wyatt years and single platoon football.

Actually, if you have access to ESPN360 (formally ESPN3) through ATT or a lot of other ISPs, just hook your laptop or similar device to your TV and watch for free. Great for the regional games if they are not carried in your area as well as PPV games (outside of TN). I believe the same FB and BB games as are on Game Plan and Full Court are available plus possibly some others.
I also got caught up in the Tennessee Terrace problem and thought the donations were way out of line. I got moved not to the end zone, as I continued to contribute, but to the deck on the other side and much higher up and dropped my season tickets this year after having had them since 1966 through good and bad times. So quit not because the Vols are currently mediocre (seen a lot of those seasons), but because they just don't give a darn (to be polite) about us fans any more. Loyalty no longer counts just big bucks as others have stated
So on to HD TV, watching with friends, and occasional ESPN360 coverage from now on - and eliminate those 4 hour trips each way and overpriced motel bills. May decide to save on some donations as well. Will have some withdrawal pains, but should survive just fine. Whoever ends up with my seasons tickets, if anyone, have fun.

And, I thought, Heath Shular had lost out his junior year to a quarterback from FSU who was not even drafted. Hank Lauricella to a tailback from Princeton (Dick K something), Majors to Paul Hornung (then a quarterback)at a ND team with a losing record, and, of course, Peyton to the defensive back from Michigan. All arguably were robbed.
Probably waiting for the new President to make the decision. From an email we alumni got yesterday, apparently there will be an announcement on the new president today if the Trustees reach an agreement.
On this day, two of the worst coaching staffs in the country. Barnhill said keystone cops and that about describes it. Why even try to make multiple desperation substitutions when the clock is about to run out? Players played their hearts out and sure deserved better than this. As a student and long time season ticket holder,I have been following Vols for many years and this is the most frustrating way to lose I can ever recall.
If you live in Tennessee I doubt you will be able to watch it on ESPN GamePlan or ESPN3 (formerly ESPN360). It likely will be blacked out because the PPV is broadcast in TN.
