Before the Vols' season could even begin, they took a hit. Tennessee head basketball coach Bruce Pearl was found to have lied about recruiting violations. The University of Tennessee and SEC came down with harsh sanctions in response. The Vols struggled through the regular season, having an especially hard time winning on their home court of Thompson-Boling Arena. After losing in the SEC quarterfinals to Florida, the Vols received a No. 9 seed in the West to play against Michigan in the 2011 NCAA tournament.
